New Puppy Bowl App from Subaru

Subaru: Dog Tested. Dog Approved.™
Are you ready for some Puppy Bowl?!

Get ready for the big game with a new Puppy Bowl Co-viewing App presented by Subaru!

Puppy Bowl IX is almost here!  Airing live on Sunday, February 3, any one who loves puppies - and who doesn't love puppies - needs to tune in to Animal Planet at 3 pm E/P time for the big game!

The Puppy bowl is an annual 2 hour television special that debuted on The Animal Planet eight years ago.  Puppies play a football game with dog toys and hilarity ensues.

There's a Most Valuable Pup award, a water bowl cam, slow motion cameras, hedgehog referees and more.  This year there's a new lipstick cam mounted in the lips of the dog toys for some really close-up action.  You don't want to miss the halftime show featuring cute kittens.

Before the big game this year, treat yourself to Subaru's new App for the Puppy Bowl!  Just download the "IntoNow" app on your tablet or mobile device here http://blogp.ws/Wxa8ia

Dog friendly Subaru has provided a way to make the Puppy Bowl even more fun and interactive as a part of their Dog Tested. Dog Approved.™ campaign. Their app will have Subaru content available on February 3 during the Puppy Bowl AND will also work during the re-air (check your local listings.)  Available for tablet and mobile devices, it promises to make a good time even better.  [Note:  the app only works in unison with the broadcast -  ie: the sounds within the puppy Bowl broadcast rigger activity on the app, similar to Shazam technology.]

As Subaru Puppy Bowl App users watch the Puppy Bowl live on TV, the Puppy Bowl Plus application will serve up additional content to interact and engage with.

What a barking good combination:  the Puppy Bowl and Subaru.  Each year Subaru of America celebrates the love between Subaru owners and their dogs with a dog-specific campaign.

This year's Subaru Dog Tested. Dog Approved.™ campaign introduces Grant Weber, Subaru Canine Sales Associate.  Having sold Subaru vehicles to only dogs, there's simply no better friend to man's best friend.  No matter size, breed, or temperament, he'll find the right Subaru for your needs.  So if you're a dog, and you're looking for a Subaru, head on down to see Grant Weber.  Subaru is sure you'll leave with your tail held high.

We never miss the Puppy Bowl!  This year we're planning on having even more fun with the Subaru Puppy Bowl App.   What are you waiting for?  Download it now!

Adoptable Dog Boogie Pilgrim Has Personality to Spare

You really do need a fun loving, car riding, grass rolling guy in your life, right?

Boogie Pilgrim is all that and more!

For starters, he is one handsome dude of a dog.  A beautiful white with some black beauty marks, Boogie Pilgrim is a 45 pound, one year old, Pitbull Terrier mix.  He is working on his house manners and is learning basic training commands.

He may look like a distinguished gentleman in his photo, but you should see him lolling on a comfy bed or couch.  Boogie Pilgrim loves car rides and knows that his place is in the back seat, checking on the world outside the window.  He's an outdoor boy and loves to roll in the grass.  Fetch is his favorite game.

Boogie Pilgrim is a young guy just finding his way in the world.  All he needs is someone to love him and help him be the best dog he can be.

If you think that someone might be you, contact Stray Rescue of Saint Louis at 314-771-6121.  Boogie Pilgrim is calling their Pine Street animal shelter home for now.

Founded by Randy Grim, Stray Rescue of St. Louis's sole purpose is to rescue stray animals in need of medical attention, restore them to health, and place them in loving adoptive homes. Virtually all of the pets they save have been abused and neglected. They've been dumped on highways, or remote country roads. Abandoned in public parks, empty houses and dark alleys. They've even saved dogs left chained behind buildings after their owners had moved away.

Dog Song Saturday: Three Leg Dog by Cove Store Pickers

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Today's song is Three Leg Dog in honor of my dog, Benji, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge a long time ago.

Benji was a tripawd after losing a back leg to cancer.  I don't know how Joe, the "Three Legged Dog of Awesomeness from Washington State", lost his leg, but his spirit reminds me of my Benji.

Three Leg Dog is performed here by the Cove Store Pickers in this original music video they created.

Grab a dog.  A tripawd if you've got one!  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and tap your toe to Three Leg Dog.

HooRag Bandanas for Dogs | Product Review

When HooRag Bandanas contacted me and offered a couple of their dog bandanas to try, I looked at their web site and thought:  what fun!  Though we're not keen on costuming our dogs, both Jeffie and Rudy enjoy wearing bandanas.  Rudy, especially.

HooRag Bandanas are not at all your ordinary bandana.  They are a seamless cotton-polyester blened micro-fiber that is light weight, moisture wicking, and fun to wear.

Originally designed for people, as opposed to canines, Florida based, Hoo-Rag bandanas are popular with snow boarders, snow skiers, runners, mountain bikers, hikers, and more.  People use them as a traditional bandana, a beanie, neck gaiter, face mask and more.  A real plus for outdoor types, they're good for putting a barrier between your head and the elements.

Dogs, of course, wear them to be stylish and cool.

Well, dogs other than mine.

Our two sample HooRag Bandanas arrived very quickly, individually wrapped in attractive packaging.  One is a red and white design of the HooRag logo;  the other is a pretty dog-gone cute brown and tan dog bone design.  The fabric is smooth and silky.  The HooRag tube design is just a little stretchy.

Both Jeffie and Rudy were interested and ready to try them on.

That's when I discovered that my dogs have fat necks!  Okay, not fat necks, so much as Jeffie and Rudy are just too big to wear the HooRag bandana comfortably.

Once on, Jeffie immediately wanted that thing off.  Too tight.

Jeffie's eyes are pleading with the Dog Daddy:
Please make her stop and take this off.

Rudy wore his HooRag Bandana for quite awhile, although it obviously was too tight to be totally comfortable.  Plus, the "double chin" it gave him was not what I'd call attractive.
Check out that double chin!  (giggle)
This photo shows the fit.

The Dog Daddy was our next guinea pig and he pronounced it pretty cool.  Soft, silky fabric.  Just enough stretch to be comfortable.  He was genuinely intrigued and I suspect the HooRag Bandanas will remain his.

Our recommendation?  Very cute way to doll up your dog, as long as your dog is not an 80 pound and up, large breed dog.  No doubt about it - if our dogs were just a tad smaller, we think we'd truly love the HooRag Bandanas.

HooRag Bandanas come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.  Cost is $14.95, including shipping, on the HooRag Bandana web site.  They are also available in custom patterns.  You can order wholesale and even use your own logo or artwork.  Great idea for a dog event!  I can just see these on some Greyhounds...  (slender necks, you know)
 .
* We were given two sample HooRag Bandanas to try out in exchange for our honest review.  We were not financially compensated for this endorsement.

Sniff and Mark New iPhone App for Dog Lovers

Sniff and Mark is a fun new iPhone app to play with your dog, family, and friends.  Developed by Peter Lipa, Sniff and Mark was inspired by his Vizsla dog, Skippy, and other dogs in his family.

In this game, real dogs are the center of the action.  Players use their gps-enabled iPhones to mark along with their dogs on their walks.  The app gives a visual presentation of the dog's changing territory and keeps track of all the states visited by the dog.

Players are able to see the other Sniff and Mark dogs that have marked in a spot earlier and can also leave messages for each other.  Sort of like how dogs leave messages for each other when marking.  [insert giggle here]  The dogs earn badges as they Sniff and Mark, and their humans can see where their dog ranks in the "winners circle."

The folks at Sniff and Mark believe every walk with your dog should be an adventure.  The Sniff and Mark iPhone app is free, so what are you waiting for?!  Learn more about it at www.sniffandmark.com  and fetch the download link at iTunes now.

Fighting Canine Cancer: Golden Retriever Lifetime Study

The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is an effort to learn how to prevent cancer and other diseases.  Conducted by the Morris Animal Foundation, it is the largest and longest observational study ever undertaken to improve the health of dogs.

The study will enroll up to 3,000 Golden Retriever dogs and will last 10 - 14 years.

The study is based out of Colorado with the assistance of the Flint Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University.

They're looking for Golden Retriever dogs under two years of age.  So far approximately 500 dogs are participating in the study.  The goal is 3,000.

The Morris Animal Foundation is a nonprofit organization that invest in science that advances veterinary care for companion animals, horses, and wildlife.

Here's what the Morris Animal Foundation says about the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study:

Why Should Your Dog Participate?

More than half of Golden Retrievers die from cancer, and it is the leading cause of death in all dogs over the age of 2. By participating, you will help scientists:
  • Identify ways in which genetics, environment and diet may affect a dog's risk for cancer
  • Determine risk factors for other major health disorders in Golden Retrievers
  • Learn how to better prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and other canine diseases
  • Improve the health of future generations of Golden Retrievers and help create a healthier tomorrow for all dogs

Who Can Participate?

  • Golden Retriever owners over 18 years of age and living in the contiguous United States.
  • Dogs that are healthy and under 2 years of age at the time of application.
  • Dogs that have a three-generation pedigree.

What Is Expected of You?

  • Agree to participate for the life of your dog
  • Select a veterinarian who agrees to participate with you
  • Complete online questionnaires regarding your dog's food type and feeding habits, environmental exposures, behavior/temperament, disease events, etc.
  • Visit your dog's veterinarian for annual exams and sample collection (blood, urine, feces, hair, and toenail clippings)
  • When applicable, allow collection of tumor samples for evaluation
  • Be willing to consider a necropsy (post mortem examination) when your dog's life ends

Study Participants are responsible for all costs associated with the annual exam, sample collection and laboratory test results. Morris Animal Foundation will reimburse up to $75 of these costs per year after verification that the exam and sample collection has been completed.

Letter from Pit Bull Dog Falcon

This beautiful boy is Falcon.  He's a 2 year old Pit Bull mix who is currently calling Wayside Waifs in Kansas City home.  Below is his message to you, plus a wonderful adoption video!
"Hey there! I'm Falcon, a happy, energetic boy, just searching for a brand new home. I'm loads of fun and ready to go, so I hope you can keep up with me! I am a 2 year old, 46 pounds of solid muscle, Pit Bull Terrier/Pointer mix. I'm a handsome, fascinating combination of breeds and you won't find another dog out there like me! First thing you'll notice about me is my eyes. Oh my, my picture really doesn't do me justice, but come out to meet me and you'll find I have the most beautiful eyes ever. I'm strong and loyal, just like my Pit Bull ancestors. And I'm athletic and active, just like my Pointer ancestors. I love to play and am happy to join you with whatever activity you'd like to do.

I came to Wayside as a transfer from the shelter in Springfield, MO, when they ran out of space for me. With my unique looks and loving, fun personality, it didn't take me long to make a name for myself here. I'm already a volunteer favorite, thank you very much! They take me out for a walk or a run to try to tire me out, but no one has succeeded in that as of yet. It's hard for an active dog like me to live in a kennel, so I really, really appreciate it anytime I can get out to play. When I finally get home, life will be so wonderful! I think about it all the time and look forward to the day I get adopted. That will be the best day ever.

It seems like I'm already at least partially housetrained. I keep my kennel clean and go to the bathroom as soon as I get outside. Please be patient with me when we get home though, as I learn all about my new routines. I love to go for walks, although sometimes I forget my own strength and pull on my leash just a little. A harness would be good for me and make our walks much more enjoyable for both of us. I'll make a really great exercise partner for my new family...always up for a walk or run or hike or just playtime in the backyard. I need and want exercise to keep me happy and healthy, so I hope you're the active sort who likes that kind of thing too.

I love my treats! And I'm smart and eager to please, making me a perfect candidate for training. I hope you'll take the time to help me learn all about what it means to be a great family dog. I've already mastered 'sit' and 'down', and I'm working on 'leave it'. I am happy to come whenever you call me, and am such a good listener when you need something from me. I'm social and sweet and just an all around great dog!

My play with other dogs can get sort of rough and rowdy. I love to play, but not all dogs appreciate my style. So please bring any other dogs you have to meet me before we go home together, just to be sure we get along great.

Please come for me soon! I need a home! I need a family. I need you. I'm waiting for you now.
Love, Falcon"

Dog Song Saturday: Adopt a Dog by Edie Brickell

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Today's featured dog song is short and sweet.  All of us at Talking Dogs love the message:  adopt a dog.

We also like that this is short and sweet because just two weeks ago we adopted our little black Golden Retriever / Labrador mix puppy, Rosie.  And we need to play with her!

This dog music video is actually an ad spot for the SPCA.  The song is Adopt a Dog, an original song by Edie Brickell.

Trust us, you're gonna love it!

Grab a dog.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Adopt a Dog.

If you're in the mood, fetch some more dog song music videos at Talking Dogs.  We've got quite a collection!   Then be sure to scroll down below today's feature to explore some barking good blogs because today is a Pet Blogger Hop.
