Ohio Dog News
In Ohio, House Bill 79, which was introduced last year and currently assigned to committee, legislators heard testimony about whether or not to delete the language that defines a "vicious" dog as "belonging to a breed commonly known as a pit bull dog." Representative Murray, who's on the committee, seems to really be thinking about whether the current law had unintended consequences. "[The law] has probably caused a proliferation of ownership of these animals[.] [T]he unintentional result is we've stigmatized and probably caused more injuries in the long term."
Also in Ohio, after the resignation of dog warden Tom Skeldon, Lucas County animal welfare is ripe for positive change. Unfortunately, there are still some commissioners who are trying to maintain Skeldon's policy of euthanizing all pit bulls and refusing any pit bull adoptions. Newly hired dog warden Julie Lyle has a tough road ahead of her.

Virginia is for Lovers and Dog Lovers
"No dog should be euthanized solely because of their breed."
That's what Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is trying to legislate in Virginia. When he was Attorney General in 2006, apparently, he issued an opinion stating the same thing. Now that he's governor, he wants to mandate that no public shelter can kill an animal based only on breed. Virginians, you can contact your local assemblyman to let them know where you stand on the Governor's amendment and don't forget to thank Governor McDonnell too.

Missour Humane Day April 20, 2010
Missouri Humane Day 2010
The Seventeenth Annual Humane Day is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2010. This year, we are very excited to announce the "Dogs Can't Vote...You Can" Art Exhibit as a part of Humane Day. (For more information on this exhibit, visit www.maal.org)
Humane Day is a day when humane organizations and individuals from around Missouri gather in Jefferson City. It is an excellent opportunity to present animal welfare issues to all legislators. Display tables from assorted rescue and animal welfare groups are set up around the rotunda and legislators, staffers and members of the general public are able to visit the booths to learn about the work being done by and on behalf of animals in Missouri. In addition, we encourage anyone attending Humane Day to take this opportunity to meet with your legislators and to introduce yourself as one of their constituents, informed and concerned about animal welfare.
If you would like to participate in Humane Day as a group or individual, please RSVP today at 314.361.3944 or by e-mail at mail@maal.org. Although we will accommodate everyone who expresses interest, space is limited and reservations for table space will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Animal Legislation in Missouri, An Update
Missouri Alliance for Animals Legislation - Update
So far the legislative agenda has been dominated by the Puppy Mill Initiative and working defensively to ward off potentially harmful legislation.
The main focus this session has been House Joint Resolution 86, which has passed the House and was voted out of the Senate Agriculture Committee last week with substitute language. The Alliance is concerned about the unintended consequences this constitutional amendment could have not only on the puppy mill initiative but also on the entire citizens' initiative process as provided for in our state constitution. They are working with Senators to make changes to make changes to this resolution.
House Bill 1747, sponsored by Rep. Jim Viebrock, has also passed the House. This bill attempts to get around federal restrictions on meat inspectors working in horse slaughtering plants and allows for horse slaughter in Missouri for the purpose of producing meat for human consumption. The legislation will now head to the Senate for their consideration. The Alliance is watching this bill especially closely because it has been amended with statutory language that targets the Puppy Mill Initiative.
They are awaiting hearings for their dog fighting bills, SB 664 (Sen. Scott Rupp) and SB 632 (Sen. Jane Cunningham), which were filed early and have been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Both bills increase the penalty from a misdemeanor to a felony for the second offense of being a spectator at a dog fight. They also require a hearing within 30 days to determine what happens to the animals that are seized. This would allow the dogs to be rehabilitated and adopted into good homes more quickly.
A hearing has been held on one of their large carnivore bills. House Bill 1288, sponsored by Rep. Mike Sutherland, would create a program of regulation within the Department of Agriculture for owners of large carnivores and would require liability insurance, caging restrictions, and other important standards. Rep. Sutherland's bill will most likely be included in the House's omnibus agriculture legislation. We are still awaiting a hearing on Senate Bill 832, sponsored by Sen. Tom Dempsey.

2010 US Mutt Census Make Your Bark Count
2010 National Mutt Census
As millions of Americans take part in our nation's Census this year, a common member in millions of
households isn't included - man's best friend. That's why in 2010, the estimated 38 million mixed breed dogs in the U.S. also will have the chance to stand up and be counted with the nation's first ever "National Mutt Census."
2010 is the year of the U.S. Census, but not just for humans. For the first time ever, the estimated 38 million mixed breed dogs in the U.S. will also have the chance to stand up and be counted in the inaugural “2010 National Mutt Census” conducted by Mars Veterinary, the creators of Wisdom Panel™ Insights, the most effective cheek swab canine test available, and Wisdom Panel™ Professional - the only blood based canine DNA test... available exclusively at your local vet.
The 2010 National Mutt Census aims to reveal valuable data about man’s best friend. It will examine the breed makeup of the American Mutt and determine a variety of insights into our love-affair with mix-breed dogs, including which breeds are most popular, most unusual, feeding habits and role within the family structure.
Uncovering these insights will speak volumes about the health and behaviors that apply to the most common breeds. It will help dog-owners become better pet parents, creating a closer bond. And dog-lovers will understand the four legged population around them that much better.
At Mars Veterinary, they believe the part-Terriers and part-Poodles of the world deserve to have their numbers known.
They deserve to be counted, so please register your mutt
The For Love of a Dog canines, Tucker, Lucy B and Jeffie have been counted. Join us at http://www.muttcensus.com/

Borzoi Russian Wolfhound Dog Breed Jewelry
I don't know how much longer I can hold out before I simply have to add a Borzoi to our family. The more I read about them, the more I want one. The more I look at dog jewelry like this Borzoi pin, the more irresistable they are.
This is an absolutely gorgeous handcrafted tri color Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound) dog breed pin. These handmade dog breed pins (brooches) are like no other. Entirely made by hand by an American artist. First a hand carved sculpture is created which is then used to create a mould. Cast in resin, then hand air brush painted. They are then given a protective coating of lacquer so you can enjoy this dog breed jewelry for many years. Every effort is made to adhere to AKC and UKC dog breed standards.
Frankly, these dog pins are amazing works of dog art. Notice the bone structure and musculature of the dog. I've tried to show the sculptural details in the photos of this dog breed pin. In addition to being a perfect gift for a Borzoi dog lover, this would make a fabulous jewelry gift for someone who loves the Art Deco or Art Nouvou periods of history and decor.

Swiss Mountain Dog Jewelry Pin and Necklace
Now this is an amazing Greater Swiss Mountain Dog necklace. Wonderful details and entirely handmade. Hand sculptured and hand painted pin by a Wisconsin artistf. I've known a few Swissies and this is delightful. Actually this Swissy dog pendant is removable and can be worn as a pin. I handcrafted this dog breed necklace using lots of big beautiful black Obsidian, all hand knotted on black German silk. The necklace's sterling silver extender chain is accented with a pretty Black Onyx puffy heart. A very elegant, big, bold necklace, just like these marvelous Swissy dogs.
Note: I've used a pin adapter to use this pin as a pendant. You can easily remove the pendant to wear as a pin and in fact, you could attach any of your own pins to this necklace, too. Very versatile dog breed jewelry.
