Missouri has had one the weakest laws governing the ownership and care of dangerous exotic animals. It was significantly weaker than the laws of all eight bordering states regarding the private ownership of such animals. As a result, Missouri has become a haven for disreputable owners and a hub for illegal sales of these animals. Large carnivores are often found neglected in unsanitary, unsafe situations, such as a tiger named Sheena, found in a raid on a Seneca puppy mill in 2009. Sheriffs cited the lack of adequate state protections as a contributing factor in two tragic tiger attacks that left Missourians severely injured in 2008 (Wesa-A-Geh-Ya in Warrenton; Predator World in Branson).

“No dog should have to suffer this way,” said Debbie Hill, Vice President of Operations for the Humane Society of Missouri. “Pet owners need to understand hot weather can be deadly for pets. And, it is illegal to allow a dog to be injured in this way.”
If you are aware of animals in heat danger, please notify your local Humane Society. Visit the Humane Society of Missouri on the web for tips to keep your pets safe during hot weather.

The dog, named Desperado by his Humane Society rescuers, had a rusted, dirty chain link collar deeply imbedded around its neck. The gaping wound measured 1 ½” deep and 10” long circling the dog’s neck. The chain link collar, which had to be cut with a bolt cutter, was only 6” in diameter. Animal Cruelty Investigators stated the collar should have been at least 10” in diameter to properly fit a dog of Desperado’s size.
Humane Society of Missouri veterinary staff examined the dog, cleaned the wound and have administered medication to alleviate pain and prevent infection. The dog will receive continuing treatment to allow the wound to heal. Humane Society veterinarians are cautiously optimistic the dog will make a full recovery.
Desperado was discovered on the property of a Baden, Missouri, business, his chain tangled in equipment on the property. Realizing the dog was injured, the owner of the business contacted the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force which brought Desperado to Humane Society of Missouri headquarters in St. Louis City.

What can you do to make sure your critters stay safe, healthy and comfortable? The good folks at the Humane Society of Missouri have some barking good tips:
•Never leave a pet unattended in a parked car. The temperature in a car can exceed 100 degrees in minutes. It is inhumane, illegal and can cause severe injury or even death within minutes.
•Be certain outdoor pets have access to fresh, clean water at all times.
•Secure plastic water bowls, never metal, to the ground so your pet can't accidentally tip them over. You can dig a small round hole and place the water bowls inside.
•Ensure that your pet has access to shade at all times of the day. Your dog might be in the shade when you leave for work, but the sunlight moves throughout the day. Don't allow your pet to be stranded in the scorching sun.
•If you run or jog with your dog, take frequent water breaks for yourself and your dog. Remember that asphalt and concrete get hot quickly. You have rubber soles on your feet--your dog does not. On hot days, leave your dog at home.
•Do not bicycle or rollerblade with a pet. Heat stroke and possible death can occur very quickly, particularly in hot weather.
•When the weather is dangerously hot, keep pets inside.
•If your pet is showing signs of heat exhaustion (excessive panting, vomiting, lethargic behavior), right away begin applying cold water to your pet's extremities. See your veterinarian immediately!
•During the summer, mosquitoes are prevalent. Make sure your pet is tested by a veterinarian for heartworm disease (a mosquito-transmitted, often fatal disease) and begin heartworm prevention medication.
If you spot an animal in heat related danger, be a good soul and report it to your local or state Humane Society. Here in Missouri you can call (314) 647-4400.
Stay Safe and stay cool...

Jeffie (shown above as a puppy) likes grass and he's not alone. Dogs love grass. Eating it, rolling in it, playng on it and fertilizing it, too. Urine can cause a nitrogen overload on most grasses and femailes, because their squatting produces a steady, concentrated stream, are more likely to create the brown ring pattern on lawns, which some horticulturists call “female dog spot disease.”
So if you’re planting or replanting a lawn, chose your grass type with that in mind. Fescue and perennial ryegrass have been found to be the most urine tolerant. Bluegrass and Bermuda grass seem to be the most sensitive. Or consider a grass substitue like white clover or O’Connor’s strawberry clover, both are easy to maintain, plus require less water and less fertilization than grass.
From The Bark Magazine comes these outdoor safety tips regarding dogs and grass.

* Garden organically for the sake of the planet and your dogs.
* Raised beds protect plantings from paws and tails
* Digging pits, preferably in shaded locations, give dogs places to practice their excavation skills without disrupting your garden beds.
* Leave a plant free patrol area around the perimeter of your yard. Dogs instinctively and repeatedly cruise boundaries and fence lines.
* Construct a barrier arround plants of the nightshade family, including eggplant, tomato and potato. There foliage and stems contain dangerous alkaloids that can kill a dog.
* Avoid cocoa bean mulches. Their chocolaty smell makes them pup catnip, but they contain chemical substance which is toxic for dogs.
* Cross almond or walnut trees off your list for areas used by dogs. Tanin is a canine toxin and almond and walnuts hulls contain it. Moldy walnuts are also a problem.
* Do not use snail bait containing metaldehyde, which is highly poisnous to dogs and cats. Copper barrier tape is a good alternative. Slugs and snails are deterred from crossing it by the tape’s tiny positive electric charge.

Hudson & Murphy (affectionately known to all as "The Fuzzybutts") and he have walked across 14 states and are currently in Connecticut. We've got about 200 miles left and are scheduled to arrive in Boston the weekend of June 18th.
This walk is just the first step of a lifelong commitment and they're in the process of launching phase II: 2 Million Dogs which was conceived on the simple belief that if 2 dogs can walk 2,000 miles we can get 2 million dogs to walk 2 miles for cancer.
Does your dog have cancer?
Would you like their DNA to be a part of a historic study benifitting both pets & people?
2 Dogs & CHCC have a goal to collect 2,000 DNA samples by June 19th.
If you are attending the puppy up! Festival at the Boston Common June 19th, bring your dog to submit a blood sample at the collection site there.
If you can't make it there sign up online to submit a sample from your dog with cancer. HELP 2 DOGS 2,000 MILES COLLECT 2,000 DNA SAMPLES
