A Christmas Tail from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue: Dog Song Saturday

Today brings National Adopt a Senior Dog Month to an end, however there are many senior dogs still hoping for a loving forever home.

It's Saturday and time for a dog song at Talking Dogs AND it is the "Thanksgiving Saturday" which kicks off the Christmas season in earnest.  I've got a great dog music video for you!

A Christmas Tail was written and directed by Mike Noyes for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.  As you'll soon see, Casper the dog had just one wish this Christmas.  His story is set to an upbeat music track and, I assure you, it is a story with a happy ending.

Take a break from all those turkey leftovers and the holiday shopping frenzy.  Grab a dog to cuddle.  Sit. Stay.  Relax and enjoy A Christmas Tail.

Since 2007, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue has been dedicated to improving the lives of senior dogs.  On a local level, Muttville rescues senior dogs and finds them new homes or gives them hospice.  On a global level, Muttville provides information about caring for older dogs and suport for the people who do.  Their mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs.

My Dogs the Hunters : Monday Mischief

You'll be glad there are no descriptive photos for this Monday Mischief post.  I don't think you'll want visuals.

The Talking Dogs were full of mischief on Saturday.   They fancied themselves hunters.

Just after dawn, I heard the dog daddy telling Jeffie to "drop it."  More than once.

Jeffie had managed to run down a rabbit.  He'd brought it to the deck, ostensibly to share with us, but really didn't want to let it go.   Third "drop it" and he did.  The poor dead bunny was disposed of.

Does this look like the face of a bunny killer?

A few hours later, I was letting the dogs in when I realized Rosie had a field mouse in her mouth.  This time it was me saying "drop it."  She did.  Too late for the mouse, which was also disposed of by the dog daddy.

This was after I'd seen Rudy catch a vole and pass it off to Rosie to play with.  At our house, there wasn't just poop to pick up in the yard this weekend!

I think Rosie is thanking Rudy for the vole!

Saturday afternoon Rosie, who had obviously carried on in hunting mode, managed to get all the way into the house.  She dropped her mouse in the kitchen.  Do you think she wanted it roasted or something?   Anyway, once again the dog daddy was put into service for dead mouse disposal.

Mama, would you fry up this mousie for me?

When the FedEx man came by a little later, I couldn't help thinking he was lucky he came to the front door since the dogs were in such a blood thirsty mood!

Ironically, when I was catching up on Facebook, I spied Freighter, who really is a hunting dog, zonked out napping!

Thankfully, none of the dogs wants to eat their kills.  They're retrievers.  They love to carry them around and/or bring them to the house to share with us!

Rabbits, birds, voles - we're used to.   I guess with our cat Skeeter getting up in years, she's decided she's retired and is passing the mouse hunting along to the canines.

It appears Skeeter has trained them well!

Thank you to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

Adopt Sophie a Senior Tricolor Harrier Dog in Missouri

This sweet senior dog is Sophie.  She a spayed female, tricolor Harrier and about 7 years old.  Sophie has a beautiful tricolor coat and lovely floppy ears.

Animal shelter staff say she's a typical hound dog:  vocal!  Sophie loves to talk to people to get their attention.  Once she has it, she's pretty laid back.  Sophie is easy to walk on a leash and loves to go for walks to explore the world.

Have a look at Sophie's adoption video and you'll see how mellow she is.  Give the Human Society of Missouri animal shelter in Chester field a call at 636-530-0805. Sophie's animal ID number is A471494

Sugar Lips, Hoarding and Dog Coats | Follow-up Friday

I'm happy to be joining Heart Like a Dog in the follow-up Friday blog hop this week.  This is the blog hop that lets you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.  Hosted by FUF creator, Jodi at Heart Like a Dog and co-hosted today by Donna at Donna and the Dogs.

Did you realize that Sunday was National Black Cat Day?  I remembered in time to feature The Black Cat Song on Dog Song Saturday.  If you love cats (Skeeter insists I do) check out this purrfect feline video.

I referenced Henry's sugar lips when I featured him as my adoptable dog this week.  Though all our senior dogs eventually sported sugar lips, the black ones really showed.  Why "sugar lips?"  Because senior dogs are so sweet, I reckon.

Tucker and his sugar lips.

Hundreds of applications were submitted to the Humane Society of Missouri to adopt Trooper.  It will probably take them some time to decide who will be the lucky new family for this pup.

The running joke around our house is about how easily I could become a hoarder.  Of course, real life hoarding is no laughing matter, as the recent rescue of over 250 animals by the HSMO makes very clear in their rescue video.  These animals were removed from a property where the owner was prosecuted in 2010.  At that time she agreed not to acquire more animals for 2 years.  You can do the math.   Linda asks: "So what is to prevent this person from acquiring more animals in the future?"   Hopefully, when this case goes to court, the court will stipulate that she can acquire no more animals in the future.  Totally agree, Emma, that there probably are many more cases like this we never hear about.  Dawn, I'm so glad your mom's dog was rescued!

Rudy wearing one of his hand-me-down dog coats.
Rudy wearing another hand-me-down coat.

I have to tell you, we really are liking Rudy's new EzyDog Element Jacket.   As I prepared to write the review and surfed the company web site, I recognized other EzyDog products I've seen other bloggers review with high marks.  Emma tested the EzyDog leash and loved it.  Oz just reviewed the EzyDog shock absorbing leash. Jen has an EzyDog backpack and loves it.  In fact, I saw photos of Leroy wearing it just the other day.   Bren, I'm looking forward to your review of the EzyDog chest plate harness.

Caren is getting ready to review this jacket and mentioned that Dakota's is a little too big.   I think their jackets do run a bit large.  That said, I'm quite sure that the next size smaller would have been too small for Rudy.  Since the review I've managed to better adjust it.  Jan K - this is a lightweight water proof coat and would (in my opinion) be terrific for walking in the snow or rain.  The thing I really liked best is the cut of the coat.  As JoAnn noted, he can move really well even when he's flying.  (big smile here).
Rudy can really fly in his very own new EzyDog Elements Dog Jacket!

Pup Fan, my caramel chocolate pecan "crack pie" IS amazing!  SlimDoggy, you can substitute walnuts or another favorite nut.  Hazelnuts would be devine.  Just saying...   Tubby3pug, you're killing me!  You simply must share that oat crust caramel crack pie recipe!

I've still got rainy day dogs since it is still raining here.  Rudy is sad about the rain and Rosie is sad nobody will go outside and play in the rain with her!   In fact, when Rudy heard the zip of the camera bag and the little ding of the camera, he was too depressed to jump up with joy (thinking that it was time for a dog treat review.)  Rosie would love to splash in some puddles, MisakiDeanna, my dogs do the same thing - beg to go out then Jeffie and Rudy want right back in again (having never left the roofed porch.)  Jodi, you are so right - Rudy does absolutely adore his sister, Rosie!

Adopt Henry a Senior Black Labrador Retriever Dog in Missouri

This beautiful boy is Henry.  He's a black Labrador Retriever with some distinguished "sugar lips."  At 8 years old, Henry is a senior dog and available for adoption from the Humane Society of Missouri animal shelter in St Louis.

Henry is housebroken and is learning to walk nicely on a leash.  He's a big lover and wannabe lap dog.

Take a look at Henry's adoption video and then give the HSMO a call at 314-951-1562.  Henry's animal ID number is A562708.

Caramel Chocolate Pecan Pie | Tasty Tuesday

Around my house we're calling this "Crack Pie."  I dare you to make the recipe and not want to eat the whole thing... and then you'll want to make another!

We celebrated an early Thanksgiving this past weekend and decided to do something different than the usual pumpkin or pecan pie for dessert.

This pie certainly is a winner.  Gooey goodness - rich chocolate plus pecans.  What's not to love?

Chocolate Filling:
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 Tbsp light corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 large eggs
1 cup toasted chopped pecans
1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish piecrust

Caramel Topping:
3/4 cup sugar
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup heavy cream
4 Tbsp butter
1/4 tsp table salt
2 cups toasted pecan halves
1/2 tsp sea salt

Prepare filling:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Stir together first 6 ingredients in a large bowl.  Add eggs, stirring until well blended.  Fold in chopped pecans.  Pour mixture into pie shell.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.  (Filling will be loose but will set as it cools)  Remove from oven to a wire rack to cool.

Prepare Topping:
Bring 3/4 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp lemon juice and 1/4 cup water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat.  (Do not stir.)  Boil, swirling occasionally after sugar begins to change color, 8 minutes or until dark amber in color.  (Do not walk away from the pan because the sugar could burn very quickly once it begins to change color.)  Remove from heat, add cream and 4 Tbsp butter.  Stir constantly until bubbling stops and butter is incorporated (about 1 minute).  Stir in table salt.

Arrange pecan halves on pie.  Top with the warm caramel.  Cool 15 minutes, then sprinkle with sea salt.

Get ready to swoon!

We're joining the Tasty Tuesday blog hop today.  This is a blog hop that celebrates good food, sponsored by Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kols Notes.

EzyDog Element Dog Jacket Product Review

The last couple of winters when I posted photos of my dogs in their coats, a number of people suggested Rudy be a dog model for doggie outer wear.

Though I'm biased, I do think he looks dog-gone good in his two hand-me-down dog coats.  However, his coat is one that he "inherited" and, though he seems to be pretty confident in his masculinity, the lavender or pink colors are certainly more than a bit feminine.

So when I was offered a new dog coat from EzyDog in exchange for a review, I jumped at the chance.
EzyDog Elements Dog Jacket in Scarlet
Rudy's new coat, a new EzyDog Element Jacket in Scarlet  arrived within a couple of days and it sure is good looking!
Rudy wearing EzyDog Elements Jacket

EzyDog's newly designed Element Dog Jackets have a wind and water proof shell with an inner lining of non-pilling fleece.  They feature a Quick-Fit Neo-Xpand necklace for easy on and off.  Plus there are cam lock slider release buckles for quick adjustment for fit.

Attaching a dog leash to a harness or collar is easy with a waterproof access zipper.

A great safety feature are the side panels of the jacket.  They have light reflective piping for those in-the-dark walks.

Element Dog Jackets are available in two colors:  Sky (blue) and Scarlet (red.)  These jackets are available in a range of sizes from XXS to XXL.  Rudy is wearing an XL and, though I could fit it to be tighter, it still is quite roomy.  I'd say the sizes run a wee bit large.  Prices range from $40 to $75.

I like the sporty look of the EzyDog Element Dog Jacket, plus it is light weight and very easy to put on.  Rudy didn't mind waiting the minute or two it took me to adjust the fit.  Not only is this going to be a terrific coat for winter wear, I think it will come in very handy for those rainy days.

Plus, Rudy seemed very comfortable wearing this dog coat. He's a very active dog and it didn't seem to get in his way at all.

I'm pleased to give my highest recommendation to EzyDog's Element Dog Jacket:
  • Good size selection
  • Competitively priced
  • Comfortable design for an active dog - light weight and not bulky
  • Good looking
  • Easy to navigate web site
  • Super fast shipping
EzyDog makes a line of products aimed for dogs with an outdoor lifestyle including:  backpacks, bowls, coats, collars, harnesses, car restraints, leashes, life jackets, toys and pet carriers.  They manufacture the Original Shock Absorbing Leash designed for control, comforts and safety of dogs that pull or are in training.

* We received one (1) EzyDog Elements Jacket in exchange for our honest review of their product.  We received no other compensation - financial or otherwise.

Over 250 Rabbits Goats Cats Dogs Chickens Rescued in MO

In 2010, 158 rabbits, dogs, cats, goats and fowl were rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri in Franklin County, Missouri.

In a stipulated agreement with that County's prosecutor, the owner of the animals agreed that for a period of 2 years she would not acquire more animals than her 2 personal dogs, goats left on the property and 20 new rabbits.  That period ended February 2012.

This year, after being alerted by a concerned citizen about the possibility of a neglect situation, the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force contacted the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.  After investigating, the Sheriff's Office served a warrant to remove the animals on November 12, 2013.

Over 250 animals were rescued this time.  The animals include:  192 domestic rabbits, 25 goats, 10 cats, 21 chickens, 4 dogs, 1 duck.

According to the HSMO all of the animals were living in filthy conditions.
The rabbits were housed in raised wire-bottom cages with feces piled in the cages as well as more than a foot under the cages.
Many of the cages were encrusted with dirt and hair, plus have little to no shelter from the weather.
Water for many of the animals was frozen, dirty and contaminated with feces.
Most cages held multiple rabbits with as many as 10 rabbits crammed in each of multiple cages.

The goats appear to be suffering from an upper respiratory illness.  None of the animals appear to have received any veterinary care.

The rescued rabbits, dogs, and cats were taken to the HSMO shelter in St. Louis City for veterinary care.  The goats, chickens and duck were taken to the HSMO Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.  A disposition hearing will be held December 4.  If custody of the animals is awarded to the HSMO, as many as possible will be made available for adoption.

Missouri Dog Dragged Behind Truck Ready for Adoption

Trooper today  Photo: HSMO.org

You probably remember reading about Trooper.  A year ago, when he was only 5 months old, he barely survived being dragged nearly a mile down interstate highway while tied behind a pickup truck.  He suffered serious injuries to joints of three legs and soft tissue injuries to his face and body.  Rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri, Trooper received much needed veterinary care and rehabilitation.

Trooper Nov 2012   Photo: HSMO.org
This summer Trooper ruptured the cranial cruciate ligament in his right knee which resulted in successful surgery.  In addition to being at increased risk for injuring the ligament in his left knee for the next year or two, Trooper also has luxating patellas.  Two surgical attempts at repair have not corrected the problem.  Though Trooper needs regular exercise, he should not be considered as a running partner.

Trooper is now available for adoption.  He'd prefer a home without other animals and with older children.  The Humane Society of Missouri is accepting online applications through midnight November 17, 2013.

You might want to fetch the HSMO Trooper Store which features Trooper themed gifts for animal lovers.  All proceeds from Trooper merchandise go to investigate, heal and prevent animal abuse and are donated to one of the largest animal rescue teams in the United States:  the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force and Disaster Response Team.  Items available for purchase include:  Trooper book and plush toy, Trooper 2014 calendar, and a Team Trooper dog tag necklace.

Dog Birthdays, Holiday Teasers, and Comments: Follow-up Friday

I'm happy to be joining Heart Like a Dog in the follow-up Friday blog hop this week.  This is the blog hop that lets you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.  Hosted by FUF creator, Jodi at Heart Like a Dog and co-hosted today by Flea at Jones Natural Chews.

I want to start with a follow-up from the previous week because of a comment JoAnn made on My Tripawd Dog post for Give Cancer the Paw.  JoAnn said:  "... to make it to 14 you were doing something right even when you thought you didn't know what to do."   I should have talked to JoAnn before I published that post because she really nailed the kernel of truth.

Speaking of good things...  I'm looking forward to a couple of holiday happenings in the blogger community.  The 2nd Annual Christmas Gifts Festival will begin tomorrow on From the Dogs Paw.  Photographer Allen Pearson and his dog, Noah, will be featuring pet themed artists.  For Love of a Dog Jewelry will be included again this year.  It really is not to be missed!  I'm not saying that because For Love of a Dog Jewelry will be included again this year.  I'm saying it because last year I discovered some amazing dog art!

Another super fun holiday event is hosted by Kol's Notes.  Sound trumpets or dog pipers or something for the annual Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers!  Be sure to enter the giveaways.  You could even win a necklace from For Love of a Dog!
For Love of a Dog Jewelry necklace for The Advent Calendar 2013
If you missed My Best Friend by Heidi Winzinger on Dog Song Saturday, fetch it now.  I promise you won't regret having a listen and you'll enjoy the video, too!

Adopt Rosie A Coonhound DogJoAnn said:  What a beautiful girl.  Who wouldn't want her.   Well, unfortunately, plenty of people.  She is still available for adoption.  If you haven't shared her adoption video, please do.

About the Dog Breed Christmas Tree Ornaments - Linda always looks for CBRs ("skunked again" she said) and Holly noted "No FCR's either."  Sorry, ladies.  So many dog breeds, so many color variations, and way too few hours in a day!  In fact, if I do make your favorite dog breed and have it available now, snag it fast.  Many breeds are already sold out and I will not be offering these in the future.  Use this code for a 10% discount and free US shipping:  FLDNEW

About Rosie's birthday party photos - Meghan nailed it:  "It's always great to celebrate a birthday over lots of days!"  Our area is not the most dog friendly and Tractor Supply is the only place in the nearest town that welcomes canine shoppers.  Good thing we agree with Rhythm:  "Tractor Supply is the Best!!"
Another outtake of my party boy, Rudy

Personally, I love the outtake photos.  I agree with Oz, Rudy and Jeffie couldn't look much cuter and this is now one of my favorite photos of them.   Jeffie is thrilled he made Rita swoon :-)   And Rosie is vastly relieved that I'm not making her wear that hat again!
Rosie thinks birthdays are fun, but exhausting!

Nutro Ultra Dog Treats from Chewy.com - I have to say something I should have said in the review.  Jeffie is my picky eater and really dislikes fruit, but he loves these treats!  And though usually both Jeffie and Rudy defer to (the Queen) Rosie, they could care less if she got her turn at these, EmmaBrian gave me a chuckle with "fun with the yum."  I'm going to steal that!  And I laughed out loud at Kimberly's comment:  "Totally off topic, but when did Rosie get so big? LOL"

It seems like only yesterday that Rosie was an itty bitty puppy.

Rumpy asked if the Rescue...Pet Products passed the "safe to eat" test.  Yup.  All natural and safe to eat, though surely not in vast quantities.  In fact, Rudy quite enjoyed the peppermint in the paw balm.

So, what's been happening in your world this past week?  Join the Follow-up Friday bloghop and tell us all about it!

Organic Dog Grooming Rescue Pet Products | Product Review

When Rescue...Pet Products contacted me about doing a review of their organic pet grooming products, at first I was hesitant.  After all, we just don't do a lot of fancy grooming of our dogs and, in fact, we don't bathe them frequently.  In our house grooming means lots of brushing (and combing in Jeffie's case.)

However, after exploring their web site and talking more to the owner, I decided I like the philosophy behind their business.  Not only do they use all natural ingredients in their grooming products, they support rescue.

Rescue...Pet Products understood my hesitation and offered to send me:
  • a sample packet of Leave-In Conditioner
  • a Paw and Nose Balm Stick ($5)
  • Canine Cologne and Dog Bed Freshener  ($8)
Leave-In Conditioner can be used in between bathes to moisturize, clean and keep your pet fresh.  No water required.  You just rub it on your pet's coat and leave it in.   According to the web site, there are no toxic ingredients and it's non greasy.  It definitely smells good and is supposed to be good for doggie dandruff.  Though no one here has dandruff, this conditioner made Jeffie's coat much easier to comb.

Paw and Nose Balm Stick is pretty dog-gone wonderful!  It contains peppermint which not only smells fantastic, it soothes the skin and decreases inflammation.  Advertised as good for dry and cracked nose or paws, it made a difference on Rudy's rough pads.  In addition, it could easily help to desensitize a dog to having their feet touched.
Ingredients:  Shea butter, Coconut Oil, Peppermint Oil, Beeswax, Almond Oil, Vitamin E, Aloe Gel.
Rudy enjoy his paw pad massages with Rescue Pet Products Balm

Canine Cologne and Dog Bed Freshener comes in a swanky aluminum bottle with atomizer.  It comes in 4 scents for dogs:
  • Patchouli and Cedarwood - rustic woodsy scent with some spice to it.
  • Mandarin / Tangerine / Lemon - crisply citrus
  • Frankencense and Bergamont - sweet and tangy
  • Jasmine and Neroli - fresh floral
We were given Frankencense and Bergamont, Rescue...Pet Products' most popular scent.  Ingredients:  distilled water, organic Vodka (natural substitute for ethyl alcohol), vegetable glycerin, 100% therapeutic grade essential oils.
Jeffie loves the smell of Rescue Pet Products Canine Cologne
Jeffie and Rudy are boys who are secure in their masculinity and they love perfume and cologne, so I wasn't surprised that they loved Rescue...Pet Products Canine Cologne.  In addition, the humans enjoyed the fragrance, too.

I'm pleased to recommend Rescue...Pet Products.  These hand crafted, all natural products can be found at the JB Ranch web site plus, you can follow them on Facebook.

Rescue...Pet Products are created and produced at the JB Ranch.  With a degree in Veterinary Technology and a passion for animals, Brittany (the B in JB Ranch) began developing organic pet grooming products in 2012.  They hope to one day own their own animal rehabilitation facility on the JB Ranch in Ohio.

* We received a sample packet of Rescue...Pet Products Leave-In Conditioner, a Paw and Nose Balm Stick, and one Canine Cologne and Dog Bed Freshener from JB Ranch Rescue...Pet Products in exchange for our honest review of their products.  We received no other compensation - financial or otherwise.
