Sugar Lips, Hoarding and Dog Coats | Follow-up Friday

Did you realize that Sunday was National Black Cat Day?  I remembered in time to feature The Black Cat Song on Dog Song Saturday.  If you love cats (Skeeter insists I do) check out this purrfect feline video.

I referenced Henry's sugar lips when I featured him as my adoptable dog this week.  Though all our senior dogs eventually sported sugar lips, the black ones really showed.  Why "sugar lips?"  Because senior dogs are so sweet, I reckon.

Hundreds of applications were submitted to the Humane Society of Missouri to adopt Trooper.  It will probably take them some time to decide who will be the lucky new family for this pup.

The running joke around our house is about how easily I could become a hoarder.  Of course, real life hoarding is no laughing matter, as the recent rescue of over 250 animals by the HSMO makes very clear in their rescue video.  These animals were removed from a property where the owner was prosecuted in 2010.  At that time she agreed not to acquire more animals for 2 years.  You can do the math.   Linda asks: "So what is to prevent this person from acquiring more animals in the future?"   Hopefully, when this case goes to court, the court will stipulate that she can acquire no more animals in the future.  Totally agree, Emma, that there probably are many more cases like this we never hear about.  Dawn, I'm so glad your mom's dog was rescued!

I have to tell you, we really are liking Rudy's new EzyDog Element Jacket.   As I prepared to write the review and surfed the company web site, I recognized other EzyDog products I've seen other bloggers review with high marks.  Emma tested the EzyDog leash and loved it.  Oz just reviewed the EzyDog shock absorbing leash. Jen has an EzyDog backpack and loves it.  In fact, I saw photos of Leroy wearing it just the other day.   Bren, I'm looking forward to your review of the EzyDog chest plate harness.

Caren is getting ready to review this jacket and mentioned that Dakota's is a little too big.   I think their jackets do run a bit large.  That said, I'm quite sure that the next size smaller would have been too small for Rudy.  Since the review I've managed to better adjust it.  Jan K - this is a lightweight water proof coat and would (in my opinion) be terrific for walking in the snow or rain.  The thing I really liked best is the cut of the coat.  As JoAnn noted, he can move really well even when he's flying.  (big smile here).

Pup Fan, my caramel chocolate pecan "crack pie" IS amazing!  SlimDoggy, you can substitute walnuts or another favorite nut.  Hazelnuts would be devine.  Just saying...   Tubby3pug, you're killing me!  You simply must share that oat crust caramel crack pie recipe!  

I've still got rainy day dogs since it is still raining here.  Rudy is sad about the rain and Rosie is sad nobody will go outside and play in the rain with her!   In fact, when Rudy heard the zip of the camera bag and the little ding of the camera, he was too depressed to jump up with joy (thinking that it was time for a dog treat review.)  Rosie would love to splash in some puddles, Misaki!  Deanna, my dogs do the same thing - beg to go out then Jeffie and Rudy want right back in again (having never left the roofed porch.)  Jodi, you are so right - Rudy does absolutely adore his sister, Rosie!

Speaking of good things...  I'm looking forward to a couple of holiday happenings in the blogger community.  The 2nd Annual Christmas Gifts Festival will begin tomorrow on From the Dogs Paw.  Photographer Allen Pearson and his dog, Noah, will be featuring pet themed artists.  For Love of a Dog Jewelry will be included again this year.  It really is not to be missed!  I'm not saying that because For Love of a Dog Jewelry will be included again this year.  I'm saying it because last year I discovered some amazing dog art!

Personally, I love the outtake photos.  I agree with Oz, Rudy and Jeffie couldn't look much cuter and this is now one of my favorite photos of them.   Jeffie is thrilled he made Rita swoon :-)   And Rosie is vastly relieved that I'm not making her wear that hat again!

Nutro Ultra Dog Treats from Chewy.com - I have to say something I should have said in the review.  Jeffie is my picky eater and really dislikes fruit, but he loves these treats!  And though usually both Jeffie and Rudy defer to (the Queen) Rosie, they could care less if she got her turn at these, Emma!  Brian gave me a chuckle with "fun with the yum."  I'm going to steal that!  And I laughed out loud at Kimberly's comment:  "Totally off topic, but when did Rosie get so big? LOL"  
 

It seems like only yesterday that Rosie was an itty bitty puppy.

Rumpy asked if the Rescue...Pet Products passed the "safe to eat" test.  Yup.  All natural and safe to eat, though surely not in vast quantities.  In fact, Rudy quite enjoyed the peppermint in the paw balm.

Follow-up Friday:: Tears and Laughter

What a week of emotion.  First, I had a heck of a time writing my post for the new Give Cancer the Paw blog hop sponsored by Pooch Smooches and Peggy's Pet Place.   It timed perfectly with the anniversary of Tucker's death.  I can't believe that was two years ago; it seems like yesterday.  Then I read JoAnn's heartbreaking news about Norman.  You'll need lots of tissues to read it, but you shouldn't miss JoAnn's tribute to her beautiful boy.

On the other end of the emotional spectrum, we've been having lots of fun celebrating Rosie's first birthday.  Though I'll report on festivities this coming week, suffice to say, Rosie didn't let me spend the whole week crying!  There was a whole lot of laughing when she made her trip to Tractor Supply and picked out her birthdays gifts.  That blur is her tail wagging - LOL.

A Puppy Meant For Me
Thanks to everyone for your comments!  I do believe that Rosie and I were meant to be together and I'll tell you more about that in another post.  Here's a teaser:   it has to do with contacting an animal communicator.

Like Mary, I lost count long ago of the number of times my grandma said this rhyme to me!  Nope, Flea, her name is definitely Rosie :-)

My Tripawd Dog
Jana says:  "I can just feel how hard this must have been to write."  You are so right.  I wrote a little, cried a lot, then wrote a bit more.  Though this happened a long time ago, not a day goes by that I don't think of Benji.  He was a character and maybe, now that I've told this part of his story, I can tell some of the funny stuff.  A number of you referred to my love for him, like Jen who said: "...I could feel your love for Benji shining through:)"  Thank you.  

Mel noted: "I am so glad you went for that second opinion and had him for so long."  There is more to that part of the story, but I wanted to focus on "the big C," rather than the whole vet issue.   However, I'll note here that Dr. H is Wayne Hunthausen and, among many other honors, he was chosen 2013 Kansas City's Best Veterinarian.  Of course, in my own mind he's "the vet who saved my Bennie."

As I write this we're on our 4th straight day of rain.  The good thing is that the ponds are finally filling up.  They've been low the past few years from the drought.  The other good news is that we're on relatively high ground.  Otherwise we'd be scurrying around trying to build an ark!  None of the dogs likes getting wet.  We joke that they're so sweet they think they'll melt.  At any rate, they're very depressed.   One rainy day is a bummer;  four rainy days in a row is...  no fun!  The truly good news is that tomorrow the sunshine is supposed to return.  I just hope we'll recognize it!

Later today I'll be scanning some old photos of my dog, Benji, for a very special blog hop coming up this next week.  Benji was my tripawd and lost a leg to the big C.  I'll be blogging about our experience in the brand new Give Cancer the Paw blog hop, hosted by Jackie at Pooch Smooches and Peggy at Peggy's Pet Place.

This week also marks a very special time...  Rosie's birthday!  Yup, our girl will be one year old.  Where does the time go?  It seems like just yesterday that we brought her home from the animal shelter.  I love that her birthday coincides with National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

I actually tried to respond to most of the comments on this post.  JoAnn mentioned a mule she used for packing on their elk hunts and his nasty disposition.  I'm a firm believer that "evil" mules or donkeys are made not born.

Sometimes, when I'm sharing people food recipes, I think I should share healthy food.  Then I decide that's no fun!  We actually put some of these in the freezer to pull out later in November.  I'll let you know how well they freeze.

Autumn Reflections Mule Style
Thanks so much for all the comments!  It's one of my favorite fall photos.   Jen,  the pond reflection was actually a happy accident.  Nope, Jodi, not framed and hung somewhere in the house, but that's a very good idea.  I don't think it is weird at all that you want to hug a mule, Jackie.  They're pretty cute and with their winter coats growing in, they're very soft and "plush."  Definitely hugable and I've been known to do a lot of that.

Do you mind if I rant a little bit?
Why does October have so many cool things to celebrate or blog about?  And why are some of them even on the same day?  Adopt a Dog, Adopt a Shelter Dog, Pet Obesity Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Dog-gone it, National Pit Bull Awareness Day and National Mule Day are the same exact day.  Shoot.  There are others.  Why couldn't they all be spread out better over the year.

This week I reached my quota of horrible animal stories.  I'd just read (skimmed) the news story about another brutal crime of cruelty towards a dog and another story about the Georgia animal shelter break in (asshats turned dogs loose and made them fight), when I had an email from a friend involved in rescue in NY with another gruesome tale of cruelty.  Some days I think I just can't take any more.  You, too?

Okay, this isn't really a rant.  You know how you hear over and over again that Labs will eat anything?  Not Rudy.  A couple of days ago I finally got around to adding my dogs to Pets Move and I felt strange as I put in Rudy's weight:  104.  Doesn't that just plain sound fat for a Lab?   Well, Rudy is NOT fat!  However, I have a feeling that as Rosie moves from puppy to dog... she'll be needing to join doggie weight watchers.  [And I want you to know, per our vet, Rudy is in tip top health!]

Adopt Lilith a Pit Bull Dog in Missouri
Lilith is my most recent adoptable dog feature.  You know, I love the adoption updates so many of the Tuesdays Tails blog hop bloggers post.  Unfortunately, nearly all of the dogs I feature are from "kill" shelters.  I've learned the hard way to not do follow up.  Follow up usually results in sleepless nights, terrible dreams, and increased temptation to become one of those terribly misguided hoarders.

I'm increasing intrigued with freeze dried dog food and treats.  My pack loves these, plus we've been using Orijen's freeze dried dog food as a topper on their food.  Finally, Rudy is excited about food.

My Shelter Dogs - Wordless Wednesday
Loved all the great comments and compliments about Jeffie and Rosie.  They're just the latest shelter dogs in my life.  Beginning with Bennie, my first dog after I left home; Sherman,  and Spanky.  The others weren't lucky enough to have managed to get themselves to a shelter, but were lucky enough to have been rescued by me :-)

Adopt a Shelter Dog - Blog the Change 
I usually choose cruelty related issues for Blog the Change, but decided to go with something a bit more upbeat.  I'm glad I did.  There were so many wonderful comments on my posts, especially from those who share the stories of their own dogs.  One comment really stood out for me and I wished there was some kind of way to "like" it or "plus" it or something, so I'm going to quote it here.  From Kim Clune:

Being part of a rescue that saves sickly breeder dogs from mills while knowing full well that people buying pet store puppies is what fuels this industry, I don't know how people don't consider adoption. It's a beautiful, beautiful act to save the life of the dog you take home, to not fuel the bad breeder industry, and to make space for the next baby in need of help at the shelter or rescue.

Thanks for sharing such a beautiful example of how good it feels to do the right thing! Thanks for blogging the change!

This is also a good reminder to me to go back and finish reading all the terrific blog posts.

When I joined the modern world and purchased a new Kindle a few weeks ago, Jackie's books were my first purchases.  Thoroughly enjoyed both of them.  If you haven't read them, I highly recommend you indulge yourself!

Thanks for all your lovely comments about Falling in Love with a Lab Puppy.  What I love most about Rudy's story is that the dog daddy at our house grew up believing dogs belonged outside.  I suspect he never dreamed he would share his bed with not one, but three or four dogs, let alone fall so in love with a puppy that he just had to have him. 
 It reminds me of that Nora Ephron quotation:

You enter into a certain amount of madness when you marry a person with pets.

 The dog daddy had no idea what he was getting into when he hooked up with me!  Snoopy is so right:  Mischief is good!

Actually, since I posted very little, it seems like there would be not much in the way of follow up, right?  Well...

At the risk of sounding like your mother, think about getting a flu shot!  This is wicked stuff that came on fast and knocked me flat on my back.  And I'm the healthy one at our house!  

Never mind the dog daddy who has little immune system to speak of at this point.  Poor guy is detoxing from chemo and then this.  I find it hilarious that the CDC is telling us all to avoid sick people.  However, if you're already "sick," you are around a whole lot of sick people in clinics, hospitals, and doctors' offices.   Anyway, he got it first and I was not far behind.  Two sickies at the same time is no fun at all.  Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie wholeheartedly agree.

I had a rude awakening yesterday.  In trying to find the lyrics to a song for Dog Song Saturday, I ran into a link that sounded all too familiar.  That's how I discovered http://info-pets4u.blogspot.com/http://info-pets4u.blogspot.com  where a Blogger named Jhonyblog's has copied all of my blog posts since 2011 and some from 2010.  Go ahead, click the link and you'll see what I mean.

Since Jhonyblog's lists no contact information, I went straight to Google Webmasters Tools and reported webspam.   You might want to do a search to explore whether or not your own blog or other posted-on-the-web info has been swiped.  Since my posts were copied exactly, they weren't hard to find searching by title.

And I never did find the dog-goned song lyrics.

Wordless Wednesday: Waiting
Thanks for all the comments!  Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie do love their daddy.  They are very patient.  And, NOPE, Jan and Brian,  there were absolutely no treats involved :-)  I'm pretty sure they'd agree with Emma:  dogs spend so much of their lives waiting for their humans!  Dawn is correct.  Rosie is messing around with a very tired and beat up flippy flyer.  The center fabric is gone and when she was younger, Rosie wore it sort of like a Hula Hoop.  BOL!

You know, I've figured out why I can no longer snap cute candid photos of my dogs.  They hear the zip of the camera bag or the little ding of the camera and they are SURE that it is time for a dog treat taste test.   Plus, every time UPS or FedEx makes a delivery, they think the package is for them.  Sadly (for me), they're usually right about that!
