Help Keep Golden Retrievers (and Other Dogs) Happy, Healthy and Cancer-Free!

Cancer is something no one wants to talk about, but it is the number one cause of death for dogs older than two years of age.  Morris Animal Foundation has launched the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study to find out more about how to stop the cancer epidemic.  

This study will focus on Golden Retrievers, but its findings should apply to other dog breeds.  Additional major diseases will also be looked at through this study.  Questionnaires and annual exams will make up a large part of the discovery process of what causes cancer and other diseases in dogs.   

Morris needs dogs and their owners to sign up to be a part of this initiative.  We would really appreciate any help along the way in this quest to prevent cancer!

Qualifications to Sign up for the Study:

•  Golden Retriever owners must be over 18 years old and reside in the contiguous United States in order to participate.
•  Golden Retrievers must be healthy and less than two years old. 
•  Golden Retrievers also must have a three-generation pedigree.

Adopt a Dog: Fancy Pants, a Pitbull Mix at Stray Rescue St Louis

This adorable girl is Fancy Pants.  She's a female Pitbull terrier mixed breed dog about one year old.  At 35 pounds, she's perfect for a lap!  Here's what the animal shelter staff and volunteers have to say about her:

Everyone tends to smile around Fancy Pants.  Part of it is her adorable name, and part of it is her attitude towards life.  She is always alert, always interested in what is going on around her, and always wagging her tail - even for her picture.

Fancy Pants came into Stray Rescue with two broken legs.  Her front leg has healed, but she is still receiving therapy for her back leg.  None of this has dampened Fancy Pants' zest for fun.  She is a sweet dog with a lots of young dog energy.  A friendly girl, she will play with anyone who wants to spend some time with her.

 At 35 pounds Fancy Pants is small enough to fit into any size home, and she is sure that your home would be the perfect size for her.

This beautiful reindeer dog is Clarissa.  She's a spayed black Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog.  About 5 years old, Clarissa has found herself homeless and is currently at the Humane Society of Missouri's Chesterfield Valley animal shelter.

Adopt Dig Dug a PitBull Terrier Mix at Stray Rescue St Louis

This adorable charmer is Dig Dug.  He's a male PitBull Terrier mixed breed dog.  Medium in size at 45 pounds, he's 5 to 6 years old.  Here's what the staff and volunteers at Stray Rescue St Louis have to say about him:

Dig Dug came by his name the old-fashioned way - he earned it.  He was found on the end of a chain, but he had dug a hole so deep and crawled into it so far that no part of him was visible.  The only thing his rescuers could see was a chain going into the hole.  After they extracted him from his hiding spot, they found a bad wound on his head that was caked with dirt.  Dig Dug is now very happy to be safe and well at Stray Rescue where he doesn't have to hide or be attached to a chain.

Dig Dug is a big tail wagger.  He is a non-discriminatory wagger:  he gets all excited and wiggly to see anyone walk by his door.  He also craves love and affection and would like nothing better than to curl up in your lap and be petted.

Recently Dig Dug got to go on a five mile hike with his shelter buddies.  He loved the car ride to the hiking site, looking out the window and watching the world go by while occasionally giving his driver a quick kiss.  On the trail he never pulled, but kept pace with the other dogs and looked back to his human hiking partner for reassurance.  Dig Dug had an amazing hike.

Dig Dug is also quite a soccer player, as you can see from his adoption video below.  You'll also notice how nicely he walks on a leash and how enthusiastic he is to take a walk.
