It's Saturday, so time for another Dog Song Saturday!  We've been collecting songs about dogs for years now and, finally, we've found one related to Labrador Retriever dogs.

I Don't Care (Don't Kick My Dog) Lab Song is an original dog song by Leo Bluesy who dedicates it to all dogs, especially Labradors.  Though there's no video for this song, the image is Leo's black Lab, Maxwell.  He notes that Maxwell is "a great character, loyal, but nutty as a box of monkeys."

Jenny is a beautiful black Labrador Retriever dog who is temporarily staying with the Humane Society of Missouri St. Louis animal shelter.

This sweet girl is only about a year old.  Jenny appears to be housebroken and loves to go for walks on a leash.

My Black Lab Dog Earrings are going to Eukanuba!

I'm excited!  My black Labrador Retriever dog earrings are going to the Eukanuba National Championship dog show.  And they'll be worn by the lovely ladies accompanying a black Lab competitor that goes by the name of Calypso.

Earlier this year, Gary and I enjoyed watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.  We always pick our favorites from each class and root for them (much to our own dogs' annoyance.)  This time we were really rooting for the black Lab.  We were thrilled that he won best of his breed.

Flash forward to last week when I heard from one of my For Love of a Dog jewelry customers.  Pat had purchased a pair of my black Lab earrings and wanted more.  She mentioned that she was leaving this week for the Eukanuba show where she'd be watching her black Lab compete.

Yep.  Same dog.  Calypso is now:  MBIS MBISS GCH CH Kaltrav Caribbean Cruise JH.  He's co-owned by Pat Kroll of Honorbright Labradors, Mary Henricks, and Cindy Trip of Sunrize Labradors.  He's currently being specialed and handled by Erin Hall.  Kathy Turbett of Kaltrav Labradors bred this outstanding dog.

According to Pat, Calypso is a sweetheart with beautiful expression and effortless movement.  At Eukanuba, he'll be competing in a class of 56 Labrador Retrievers.  

The 11th Annual AKC / Eukanuba National Championship will be held on December 17 and 18 in Orlando, Florida.  A record 3,938 dogs will compete with 173 AKC recognized dog breeds represented. According to Show Chairman, Ron Menaker, this is not only the largest dog show in the country this year, it is the largest by-invitation-only dog show in their history.  This event will air on Saturday, February 4, 2012 on ABC.

Pat and her friends will be wearing their For Love of a Dog black Lab earrings to root for Calypso.  I hope they bring Calypso the very best of luck!  All of us at For Love of a Dog will be following the AENC on Facebook for live Group and Best in Show results, watching for good news about Calypso.

Adopt Jake: Black Dog from Missouri Puppies for Parole Training Program

Its past time we featured a black dog!  Jack is a male black Lab mix dog.  He's currently at the Jefferson city Correctional Center for his training.  His trainer describes Jack as you, energetic and very intelligent.

Right now Puppies for Parole is working with Jack on basic obedience training.  Jack is still a puppy right now.  He does have a potential home waiting for him with a man who has Parkinsons Desease.  Puppies for Parole will be working with Jack on companion training.

Puppies for Parole is a unique program made possible through their partnerships with animal shelters and animal advocate groups statewide. Selected offenders have the opportunity to become trainers to rescue dogs in the program. Offenders work with the dogs teaching them basic obedience skills and properly socializing the animals, making them more adoptable. Once the dogs have successfully completed the program they will be sent back to their original shelter to be placed up for adoption. Last year in Missouri, more than 46,000 homeless canines were euthanized. Puppies for Parole hopes to reduce that number by producing loving, obedient, adoptable dogs.

We haven't definitely decided on a name yet, so I'm just going to call him Puppy.  And what a puppy he is.  Puppy came from an unplanned litter.  The family moved here from Kentucky and before they could get a yard fence installed their purebred Labrador Retriever, Daisy, came into heat and had a rendevous with a neighbor dog.  Daddy is a chocolate colored Lab mix, but looks purebred.  Daisy is a gorgeous white lab.  The family had no intention of ever breeding Daisy, but put off the spay job until after they moved.  They were none too happy when Daisy turned up pregnant.

As you may remember, Gary ran into Daisy's owner at our vet's office.  Jamie had a laundry basket full of lab puppies:  black, chocolate, ginger yellow, and the lemon/white all there to be vet checked, get their first shots and be wormed.   When we went to Jamie's house we were able to meet Daisy, as well as get a look at the pup's father.   All beautiful canines.  The hard part was picking just one puppy.

Today Puppy is trying to get Jeffie and Tucker to play.  He does the play bow and softly yips...  and Tucker runs.  Jeffie is not at all sure what to make of him.   Lucy adores him.  Almost every photo we take of the puppy, Lucy is horning in.  Not because she's a camera hog, she's focused on the puppy.

He's such a mellow big lug of a puppy and, at least so far, simply a delight.  We're having fun snapping photos of his firsts:  first collar, first walk on a leash, firsh play toys, you know the new puppy drill.

We're having an awful lot of fun here at For Love of a Dog.  Who was it that said:  Whoever said money can't buy happiness forgot about puppies.

New Puppy Coming to For Love of a Dog

Tucker & Jeffie

Santa is coming to our house early.  We must have been very, very good because Santa is bringing us a new puppy.  We're all pretty excited.

We've re-arranged the mudroom to accomodate a crate.  We'll use that when we want to leave the farm.  When Gary brought in the crate and set it up, Tucker began tap, tap, tap dancing with glee.  Gary said it was in anticipation of a puppy.  I suspect he was hoping we were going to corral Jeffie in it.

At any rate, all three dogs have caught our excited energy.  Tucker and Jeffie have taken up residence at the front door awaiting the puppy's arrival.  (They haven't realized yet that daddy and I will be leaving soon to go get the puppy.)  Lucy hasn't had a whole lot to say, but she did supervise washing the puppy food and water dishes.  They definitely met with her approval.  So far none of the canines has expressed a preference on color or sex.

A few weeks ago Gary was at our vet's office with my mom's dog.  There in the waiting room was a woman with a laundry basket of puppies.  Labrador Retriever puppies in black, chocolate, yellow and one lemon/white.  They exchanged information and she said she'd get in touch soon.  Well, the puppies are now 8 weeks old and she did (get in touch.)

Now we'll see if one of them "speaks" to me.  Yes, I adore all puppies, but one must speak to me.  When we adopted Jeffie from Dogwood Animal Shelter, we'd seen his brother on Petfinder and we intended to adopt him.  Once we got there though, it was Jeffie who spoke to me.   Lucy was a similar story and I knew she was "the one."

I have a feeling that I need to be promising puppy photos.  Because I don't have much doubt that a puppy will be speaking to me in just a matter of hours.  Merry Christmas to me!
