Great Dane Dog Lover Gifts at For Love of a Dog

Great Dane Dog Breed Sculpture Ornament
from For Love of a Dog Jewelry and Gifts
The origins of the Great Dane dog breed can be traced to the Irish Wolfhound and the old English Mastiff.  Historians claim that there are drawings of dogs that resemble the Great Dane on Egyptian monuments from roughly 3000 BC.  The earliest written description of a dog resembling the Great Dane dog breed can be found in Chinese literature dating back to 1121 BC.   What an amazing history!

If your heart has been captured by one of these elegant gentle giants, then take a look at the Great Dane dog breed sculpture ornaments from For Love of a Dog.

Shown here is our handcrafted Great Dane dog ornament in fawn. Check out that darling dog bone dangle. Originally designed at Christmas tree ornaments, these dog sculptures are wonderful to display year round.

This Great Dane dog holiday ornament is molded from an original design clay sculpture and hand cast in resin. It is then carefully hand painted and airbrushed and hand detailed. Sprayed with a clear protective coating to preserve the finish for years to come. These are not flat cut outs, but are two dimensional.  The back is flat and it is signed and dated and comes with a tassled cord for hanging.   Size approx 4 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Adopt Charlie an Adoptable Great Dane Mix Trained by Puppies for Parole

Charlie, a Great Dane mix dog at Missouri
Puppies for Parole training program
For Love of a Dog would like to introduce you to Charlie, a Great Dane mixed breed dog available for adoption.

Charlie is a male Great Dane mix who is receiving his training at the Jefferson City Correctional Center through the Puppies for Parole program. His parole office is the Jefferson City Animal Shelter (which means that is the Puppies for Parole shelter / rescue partner for Charlie.)

Charlie is 70+ pounds of pure muscle and a tri-color mass of canine puppy.  Although 2 years old, he has the attention span and enthusiasm of a 6 month old puppy.  He's also more than 30 pounds underweight.  He will be a huge dog and will require lots of room to run and play.

Puppies for Parole is a program of the Missouri Department of Corrections made possible through partnerships with animal shelters and animal advocate groups statewide. Selected offenders have the opportunity to become trainers to rescue dogs in the program. Offenders work with the dogs teaching them basic obedience skills and properly socializing the animals, making them more adoptable. Once the dogs have successfully completed the program they are sent back to their original shelter to be placed up for adoption. Last year in Missouri, more than 46,000 homeless canines were euthanized. Puppies for Parole hopes to reduce that number by producing loving, obedient, adoptable dogs.

Dachshund Dog Lover Jewelry Gifts from For Love of a Dog

Dachshund Dog Bone Bracelet from
For Love of a Dog Jewelry
Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany.  The goal was to create a fearless, elongagted dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with vicious badgers.  My childhood companion, Hansel was a black and tan standard Doxie and I'm pretty sure that he never saw a badger in his whole life.   Not that he cared.  He had a busy job shadowing my mom all day long and playing fetch with me.  Then at night he'd dive under the covers and keep my toes quite warm.  He was quite a character and a beloved member of the family.  So, it's no wonder that my Dachshund dog breed jewelry is one of my favorite themes at For Love of a Dog.

If you love a black and tan Dachshund dog, this bracelet was handcrafted with you in mind. It features a wonderful Doxie dog charm. The charm is not a flat cut out, but actually has dimension. This little Dachshund dog sculpture is handmade of resin that is cast in a hand sculpted mould, then carefully air brush painted. True to AKC dog breed standards, highly detailed and absolutely beautiful.

I've combined this dog treasure with black and tan Mahogany Obsidian and Black Onyx gemstone beads and sterling silver. In addition to the Dachshund dog charm, other charms include a Black Onyx gemstone heart and a three dimensional silver dog bone. This handcrafted dog bracelet is one of a kind, just like your special Dachshund dog. Show your love to your Valentine dog lover with a one of a kind Dachshund dog breed bracelet.

Puppy Mill Law - Missouri Senate Agriculture Committee Guts Prop B

The Missouri Senate agriculture committee endorsed legislation yesterday that will gut Prop B the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.  Changes include:
  • There would be no limit on number of dogs per commercial dog breeder.
  • Licensed dog breeders would have up to 180 days to correct serious violations before they face criminal charge.
This measure, SWB113, now will go to the full Missouri Senate.

If you listen closely that sound you hear is the last, dying gasp of democracy in Missouri.

The people of Missouri got tired of being the Puppy Capital of the world.  They got up a petition drive to put a measure on the ballot that would provide humane conditions for the over 200,000 dogs in commercial dog breeding operations in Missouri.  The majority of Missouri voters approved that measure.

Now lawmakers insist they know better than the will of the people.

Its no secret that I'm a proponent of Prop B.  Conditions in Missouri's dog breeding operations sicken me and break my heart.  However, there's an even great danger here now.  The threat to our democracy.

Labrador Retrievers Still in First Place According to the American Kennel Club

Rudy - Yellow Lab
 Rudy is gloating.

The American Kennel Club just announced its nationwide registration statistics today and the Labrador Retriever is top dog for the 20th consecutive year.  Like Rudy says, what's not to love about a Lab!

Lucy pretty much agrees and sites her Labrador Retriever daddy contribution to her own awesome perfection.

Lucy - Golden Retriever / Labrador Retriever

However, both she and Jeffie were disappointed that the Golden Retriever dog breed got knocked out of 4th position this year by the Beagle.  They're both wondering what their Golden mamas think about that.  Jeffie can take heart, though, that the Border Collie moved up from 52 to 47.

Jeffie - Golden Retriever / Border Collie
Tucker's snickering... he knew some pretty cute Beagles in Virginia and maintains it was only a matter of time.
Tucker - Labrador Retriever and unknown
The humans here at For Love of a Dog can't help but be interested in the rankings.  Afterall, we love dogs.  However, we can't help but wonder how the AKC registration statistics reflect the number of homeless dogs sitting in an animal shelter this morning.  Labrador Retrievers, for example.  Plus, of course, this being Missouri... how many more puppy mills with increase the number of Labs and other dog breeds in the top 10 or 20 in their operations.  Popularity... can be a double edged sword.

Missouri Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act Repeal Hearings Continue Today

Public hearings on HBG 99, HB 94 and HB 131 continue today, Thursday, January 27 in Missouri.  All three bills would gut MO Prop B - the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.  The hearings will be held at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City,  House hearing room 3.  They begin at 11 AM.

According to Barbara Schmitz, Missouri State Director of the Humane Society of the United States, these hearings are being scheduled at the last minute and are being compressed into just a few days.  Schmitz also notes that hundreds of Prop B supporters have attended  the hearings held so far.  One of the main messages:  the legislature must respoct the will of the people and uphold Prop B.

According to Virginia Young, reporter for the St Louis Post-Dispatch, the MO House Committee on Agriculture found plenty of fault with Prop B.  The committee is moving to either scale back the measure or repeal it before the new commercial dog breeding standards go into effect this coming November.

Opponents of Prop B described the measure as a first step by the Humane Society of the United States to restrict all forms of animal agriculture.

According to Missouri Representative Ed Schieffer, Democrat from Troy:  "The purpose of these groups is to keep us from eating any meat.  We have to be very cognizant that there is an agenda here beyond Prop B."

If you live in Missouri, but can't attend, please call or write your state legislators.  Over 200,000 puppy mill dogs are counting on you.

Congratulations to DogTime - Finalist in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge

The results are in and DogTime has been named a finalist in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge.  DogTime's project is now a go!

They will soon be helping to find homes for at-risk pets affected by the BP oil spill.  Gulf region families continue struggling to make ends meet and record numbers of pets are still being surrendered to local shelters.  Because these facilities are at maximum capacity, some animals will spend days or weeks in a lonely kennel - after already enduring the trauma of losing their families - only to face euthanasia.  For at least 500 of those pets, DogTime wanted to ensure a happier fate.

Bouvier des Flandres Dog Breed Jewelry and Gifts

My apologies to folks everywhere who love the Bouvier des Flandres dog breed... for calling my Bouvier des Flandres dog jewelry Shaggy Dogs.  It's just that they are so adorable, so charming, and, quite honestly, look like so many cutie patootie mixed breed mutts.

Bouvier des Flandres Dog Breed Pin and Necklace
fronm For Love of a Dog Jewelry and Gifts
So, sorry, but ... shown here is a really wonderful handcrafted necklace in which I've used this Bouvier des Flandres dog pin (brooch) as a pendant. With an sweet face and that adorable little tongue, he's frolicking off somewhere fun. This shaggy dog pin (brooch) is handmade by a Michigan porcelain ceramic artist. Truly hand sculpted using no moulds, the pin is ceramic porcelain and signed by the artist. There's just the slightest teal green cast to the little dog's fur coat. I've added a gold converter to use the pin as a pendant.

The necklace is composted of wonderfully earthy colored Fancy Jasper gemstone beads that I've accented with gold. You'll notice the sweet little three dimensional dog bone at the end of the necklace.

Such a versatile piece of dog breed jewelry. Wear this shaggy dog necklace as it is, or easily and simply removed the pendant to wear as a pin. In fact, you can even wear other pins you own on this piece. A perfect gift for anyone who loves a Bouvier des Flandres dog and one of a kind artisan jewelry.

Public Hearings Tomorrow to Repeal MO Prop B - Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act

If you're a dog lover living in Missouri you're needed to help preserve MO Prop B - the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.   There are Missouri politicians who think they know better than the voters of Missouri.  Several have introduced bills that would repeal or gut Prop B.  Hearings will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25, 2011.  There are nine bills introduced so far;  here are the ones which will receive a public hearing tomorrow:

HB 99 - The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act sponsored by Tom Loehner, district 112, and co-sponsored by Bill Reiboldt, district 130.  This bill exempts all facilities, dealers, and breeders licensed prior to November 2, 2011, from the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act passed as Prop B by voters in Nov ember 2010.  The Dirty Dozen report gives examples of just a handful of the many licensed commercial breeders who have treat their dogs inhumanely who would be exempt from Prop B's new regulations.

HB 94 - The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act sponsored by Tony Dugger, district 144 and co-sponsored by Don Wells, disttrict 147.  This bill would repeal Prop B.

HB 131 - The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act sponsored by Stanley Cox, district 118 and co-sponsored by Chuck Gatschenberger, district 13.  This bill would gut the Prop B.

What can you do?  Attend the public hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25 at 12:00 p.m.  at the Missouri State Capitol in House Hearing Room 6.    Can't attend?  Telephone your Missouri House Representative and explain why we want them to leave Prop B alone.  If you need some talking points:
  • Remind them that less than three months ago the majority of Missouri voters favored Prop B.
  • Without Prop B we will return to a standard that allowed a dog confined in a cage just 6 inches longer than her body - confined and never let out.  That dog would need not ever see a veterinarian and could be exposed to freezing temperatures.
  • Opponents of Prop B have launched a campaign of misinformation, scaring people into believing that Prop B would regulate farm animals or end all commercial dog breeding.  Neither is true.  Prop B is a measure to clamp down on abusive puppy mills and adds reasonable and humane regulations like requiring clean food and water, exercise, properly sized cages and verterinary care.
Pick up the phone.  Thousands of dogs in Missouri's puppy mills are counting on you.

Boston Terrier Dog Lover Jewelry and Gifts

Boston Terrier Dog Breed Ornament Gift
from For Love of a Dog Jewelry
I love the fact that the Boston Terrier dog breed is a true American.  In early 1870's Boston, there was a cross between an English Terrier and a Bulldog known as Hooper Judge.

Further breeding with smaller dogs brought the Boston Terrier down from Judge Hoopers 30+ pounds to the about 20 pounds size we see to day.  By the late 1880s it was becoming accepted as a new dog breed.

After experimenting with names it was called the Boston Terrier in honor of its birthplace.  Today it is one of the most popular US dog breeds.

If you are a devotee of this great dog breed or know a dog lover who adores a Boston Terrier, check out the Boston Terrier jewelry and gifts offered by For Love of a Dog.  Shown here is our Boston Terrier Dog Breed Christmas Ornament.  Perfect on a Christmas tree, but also wonderful to display year round as a piece of art sculpture.  Each ornament is a handmade artisan creation.  Not a flat cut out, but two dimensional.  Molded from an original clay sculpture, then hand cast in resin.  Carefully air brush painted and hand detailed.  A clear protective coating is applied to preserve the finish for years to come.  Flat backed;  artist signed.  Approximately 4 1/2 x 3 inches.

Adopt Dawn an Adoptable Dog Trained by MO Puppies for Parole

Dawn - an adoptable dog from the Missouri
Puppies from Parole program
For Love of a Dog would like to introduce you to Dawn, a Pekingese dog available for adoption.

Dawn is a female Pekingese dog who is receiving her training at the Western Missouri Correctional Center through the Puppies for Parole program. Her parole office is the City of Cameron Animal Control and Shelter. (which means that is the Puppies for Parole shelter / rescue partner for Dawn.)

Dawn was a puppy mill breeding dog.  She's friendly and has become housebroken quickly.  However, her regal nature does not take kindly to being told what to do.  Learning commands is coming slowly.

Borzoi Russian Wolf Hound Dog Lover Jewelry Gifts

Borzoi Russian Wolf Hound Dog Breed Pin
from For Love of a Dog Jewelry and Gifts
Borzoi comes from the Russian word borzii which means swift.  These dogs are also often called Russian Wolf Hounds because they were used to hunt wolves.  An ancient dog breed, Borzoi have been common in Russia since the 13th century.  I suppose that it could be because I have family roots in Russia, or perhaps because I adore the Art Deco period...  whatever the reason, these beautiful dogs have long appealed to me.  A running Borzoi is truly a thing of beauty.

Until I have one in the flesh, so to speak, I content myself with my own dog lover jewelry in the Borzoi / Russian Wolf Hound dog breed.  My favorite of the moment is my Borzoi pin.  My own is a tri color, but I do have them in a couple of other coat colors.

Shown here is an absolutely gorgeous handcrafted tri color Borzoi (Russian Wolf Hound) dog breed pin. These handmade dog breed pins (brooches) are like no other. Entirely made by hand by an American artist. First a hand carved sculpture is created which is then used to create a mould. Cast in resin, then hand air brush painted. They are then given a protective coating of lacquer so you can enjoy this dog breed jewelry for many years. Every effort is made to adhere to AKC and UKC dog breed standards.

Frankly, these dog pins are amazing works of dog art. Notice the bone structure and musculature of the dog. I've tried to show the sculptural details in the photos of this dog breed pin. In addition to being a perfect gift for a Borzoi dog lover, this would make a fabulous jewelry gift for someone who loves the Art Deco or Art Nouvou periods of history and decor.

Lucy Has a Tuxedo - Labrador Retriever Dog Breed Musings

Nell - A St Johns Dog circa 1856
Photo from Wikipedia
This morning I was researching a couple of dog breeds (to add them to our For Love of a Dog Jewelry and gifts web site) and got distracted.  Curious about the colors of puppies in Rudy's litter, I took a look at what Wikipedia had to say.  Not only did I find a genetic explanation for Labrador Retriever coloration, I found something even more interesting - at least to me.

We've had a number of Labrador Retriever mixed breed dogs in our family.  All but one have had a white mark somewhere on their bodies.  Either on the chests or on their toes.  At our house we refer to them as "God spots."  The folksy theory being that when God was "painting" them, that's where he was holding them; the "paint" didn't hit that spot.  We've preferred to believe that the white markings were lucky.  (Okay, groan if you must.  We have a lot of folksy theories for a lot of things.)  Anyway, now I understand, scientifically, where the white markings come from.

According to Wikipedia, the modern Labrador Retriever dog's ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland.  The founding breed of the Labrador was the St. Johns Water Dog, (also a founding breed of the Newfoundland), a breed that emerged through ad-hoc breedings by early settlers of the island in the 16th century. The forebears of the St. Johns Dog are not known, but were likely a random-bred mix of English, Irish, and Portuguese working breeds. The Newfoundland (known then as the Greater Newfoundland) is likely a result of the St. Johns Dog breeding with mastiffs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 16th century.

The smaller short-coated St. Johns Dog (also known then as the Lesser Newfoundland) was used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water. These smaller dogs were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin, and muzzle - known as tuxedo markings - characteristic of the St. Johns Dog often appear in modern Lab mixes, and will occasionally manifest in Labradors as a small white spot on the chest (known as a medallion) or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle.

Wow.  Tuxedo markings.  Lucy has tuxedo markings, as well as a few white toes.  Medallion.  Rudy's sister, the only black puppy in his litter, has a beautiful white medallion on her chest.

Another surprising thing I learned is that in the early days of this breed, puppies who were yellow or chocolate were often culled.  Black was the standard.  It wasn't until the early 20th century that yellow labs were recognized and not until around 1930 for chocolate labs. These days with the stigma attached to black dogs, who are often the last adopted at animal shelters, and the huge number of black lab mixed breed dogs who are euthanized, this was startling information.

In fact, "yellow" Labrador Retrievers were a dark, almost butterscotch color that was known as "golden" until the UK Kennel club required it to be changed to yellow.  Over time cream to light shades of "yellow" became more popular, so the original yellow, which was also called "fox red" almost disappeared from the breed.  In the 1980's English breeders began re-establishing this color.

I've always called Lucy ginger colored.  And though I've always figured she obtained her golden, fox red color from her Golden Retriever mother, now I wonder if her Labrador Retriever father also contributed color genes.  Does it matter?  Not really.  However, tuxedo sounds a lot classier than white markings.  Now, would her white tippy toes be semi-spats?

Saving America's Mustangs offers Wild Horse Eco Sanctuary

Horse advocate Madeleine Pickens' non-profit organization, Saving America's Mustangs, has a proposal to help wild horses, and save taxpayer dollars. She's offered to take in more than 2,000 wild horses scheduled to be permanently removed in late January from the Antelope Valley Herd Management Complex in Nevada.  Below is a news release from Saving America's Mustangs:

As Congress returns from the holiday weekend, members will be greeted by a full-page ad in Politico blasting the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for its decision to proceed with the roundup of more than 2,000 mustangs in northeastern Nevada, despite a cost-effective alternative on the table.

“As costs [of the BLM wild horse program] spiral out of control, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who oversees the BLM, and BLM Director Bob Abbey pledge reform. But their talk is cheap when opportunities for real action are ignored,” the ad admonishes.

The advertisement was placed by philanthropist and businesswoman Madeleine Pickens, who has purchased two ranches in Nevada and is in the process of creating a wild horse eco-sanctuary in the area. Mrs. Pickens’ ranches are situated amidst the BLM’s Antelope Complex, where BLM intends to conduct the massive wild horse roundup beginning this week.

In early December, Mrs. Pickens and her Saving American Mustangs Foundation had offered to provide state-of-the-art holding facilities for the captured horses on her private lands, and requested the BLM to postpone the roundup by a few months until the ranches were ready to receive the horses.

Mrs. Pickens proposal would prevent the waste of tax dollars incurred by shipping the horses thousands of miles to off-the-range holding facilities. Despite this, BLM rejected the offer.

“For three years BLM has stonewalled our proposal to create a wild horse eco-sanctuary that offers a cost-effective, public/private partnership solution to the government’s unsustainable warehousing of wild horses,” Mrs. Pickens said today. “Today I turn to the Congress and the American people to urge the BLM to heed the call for change before it is too late, and the last of our cherished mustangs is lost forever.”

Last week, a coalition of prominent organizations, including the Humane Society of the United States , the Western Watersheds Project and the ASPCA sent a letter to BLM director Bob Abbey urging him to postpone the roundup in favor of the cost effective alternative plan.

Beginning as early as January 20, the BLM intends to capture up to 2,228 mustangs, or 83 percent of the wild horses living in the Antelope Complex, claiming that the 1.3 million acre public lands area can sustain just 427-788 horses. Meanwhile, the agency annually authorizes the equivalent of more than 2,000 privately-owned cattle and nearly 7,000 privately-owned sheep to graze the same area.

The BLM has been harshly criticized over the past several years for its aggressive policy of rounding up wild horses from public lands in the West and stockpiling them in government holding facilities in the Midwest . The U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Senate Interior Appropriation Committee, and Interior Secretary Salazar himself have acknowledged that the program is fiscally unsustainable, yet the roundups continue. The BLM now warehouses more wild horses in government holding facilities (40,000+) than are left free on the range.

Saving America’s Mustangs is creating up to a million acre Wild Horse Eco-Sanctuary as a permanent home for wild horses presently in captivity. The “Mustang Monument” sanctuary will be a living museum, where visitors can reconnect with the great outdoors and learn about America ‘s wild horses and the important role they play in our culture and our history

Ending Puppy Mill Cruelty in Missouri - MO Prop B

Lately I've been doing a Scarlett O'Hara about MO Prop B - the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.  I'm well aware that I should be talking about it, but I keep putting it off.  I promised myself I'd blog about the latest efforts to repeal this historic legislation.

Afterall, Missouri State Senator Bill Stouffer already filed a bill to repeal it.  Many of our rural legislators seem to feel empowered by the rejection of Prop B in most of the rural areas of our state.  The puppy mill lobby continues to spread mis-information.  They claim Prop B is detrimental to the agriculture industry in Missouri.

Yeah.  Right.  There are currently over 200,000 breeding dogs here in Missouri.  Many live in such inhumane conditions that it is difficult to comprehend.  Many have never seen the light of day.  They've spent their whole lives in a wire cage with barely enough room to turn around.  MO Prop B is about preventing such cruelty to animals.

Truthfully, I don't even like thinking about MO Prop B... because then I'm forced to think about why there is such a need for the legislation.  That calls into question what kind of people could hold animals in such conditions.  And some of those people could easily be called my neighbors.  Afterall, there are over 50 puppy mills right here in my county.

It is simply so depressing, so heart-breaking, and so discouraging.  It's heck of a note when we find ourselves in need of legislating morality.  However, the puppy mill folks in Missouri have proven over and over again that is just what is needed.  And the majority of Missouri voters recognized that fact and did what they felt was needed.  MO Prop B passed.  Let's leave it alone and let it do what it's supposed to:  prevent animal cruelty.

Missouri Pet Friendly License Plates Benefit Dogs & Cats

Live in Missouri and consider yourself an animal lover?  How about a "pet friendly" license plate for your vehicle.  This specialty plate is just $25 with $20 from the sale of each pet friendly license plate going into a fund that pays for spay and neuter services.

It's a really nice looking four color plate with original art work by 501creative.  You can order yours here at the MoSHA web site.

In Missouri, more than 150,000 unwanted dogs and cats end up in shelters and animal-control facilities annually. Fewer than half of them are placed in new homes. Untold thousands of dogs and cats roam our communities as unwanted strays. Most strays die of hunger, dehydration, exposure or as the result of disease, abuse or serious injury. Animal advocates, for decades, have promoted sterilization as one key way to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats and put an end to the needless suffering and death of countless companion animals.

Money raised through the sales of these license place is allocated through a grant process.  To qualify for a grant, the recipient must be a 501-c-3, nonprofit agency or municipal animal-control agency that offers spay and neuter services for dogs and cats in Missouri.  Grant applications are reviewed by a three member panel and administerd by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

The 2010 grant recipients (from 2009 donations) include:  OPSPOT and Spay Neuter in Kansas City;  the Humane Society of Ray County in Richmond, MO;  Seven Bells Sanctuary in Cole Camp;  Friends of Animals Humane Society in Eldon;  and the Humane Society of St Joseph in Buchanan County.

For more information contact The Missouri State Humane Assciation who adminsters the program.
