Routed 66 Pet Adoption Drive

Since we live just a little over a mile from old Route 66 and we're certainly supportive of pet adoption, I just have to bark a bit about the Get Your Licks on Route 66 event.

For the fourth year in a row, Fido Friendly magazine is setting out on America's famous highway for a month long pet adoption tour.  The Get Your Licks on Route 66 Tour will raise awareness of the plight of homeless pets, vital services that participating animal shelter and rescue partners provide to their communities, and engage younger generations through humane education programs.

Victoria Stilwell from Animal Planet's series "Its Me or the Dog" is the official spokesperson and Animal Radio will be offered media support along the route where you can listen in to find a tour stop near you.

Get Your Licks on Route 66 travels the old highway between California and Chicago, Illinois.  It kicks off Saturday, October 6 and continues through Sunday, November 3, 2012.

Random Thoughts and a Puppy Video

Since I'm not in the mood to stick to my list of things I am supposed to blog about...  I thought I'd share some random thoughts.

Our Mr. Chewy order arrived last night.  Such incredibly fast service that I'm really looking forward to writing my review!  Look for it early next week.  Jeffie and Rudy were particularly happy with the delivery because I ordered some new dog treats to try. 

Earlier this week we had another delivery:  our new video camera.  This promises to be fun, though it comes with the challenge of learning to edit video.  (Just what I needed... another challenge.)  At any rate, hopefully, soon we'll give you a laugh with our efforts.  In the meantime...

I was trolling for some new dog songs and dog music videos when I tripped over the video below.  I don't know about you, but some days I just need a "puppy fix" and this one really did the trick for me.  Can your heart resist melting while watching 3 1/2 weeks old Australian Shepherd puppies explore the outdoor world for the first time?  Mine couldn't!

Puppy Bowl VII MVP Named: C.B. Shih Tzu Beagle Mix

C. B., a 16 week old Shih Tzu Beagle mix, was named Most Valuable Puppy in Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VII yesterday.  Though C. B. didn't score any point for his team, viewer's couldn't resist his cuteness.

Animal Planet's annual Puppy Bowl was an exciting match with four touchdowns scored.  Adorable adoptable puppies squirmished for a two hour "football" match.  As always, we enjoyed the water bowl cam, kitty halftime show, and the hamster manned blimp. 

New this year were the chicken cheerleaders (they replaced the bunnies from last year.)  Our favorite new addition was the kiss cam between quarters.  The puppy cam - showing the game from the puppy players point of view - made Tucker a bit motion sick.

Special guests this year included the cast of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2.  Pretty cool!  Lucy loved the song by John Fulton, Must Love Cats host.

All in all a barking good time!  If you missed the Puppy Bowl yesterday, tune in to Animal Planet for re-runs!

85 Dogs Rescued from Animal Hoarder in Saline County Missouri

Yesterday the Missouri Humane Society teamed up with Animal Planet to rescue dogs which will air on Animal Planet's animal hoarding series in early 2011.

According to HSMO,  the producers of Animal Planet's series Confessions: Animal Hoarding, the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued 85 dogs from  a property in Saline County, Missouri. During a taping of an episode of the show this past week, the owner of the dogs realized she could no longer properly care for them and agreed to voluntarily surrender them to the Humane Society of Missouri.

The breeds of the dogs include various hounds, Labrador Retriever, Dalmatian, Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, and English Setter.

Twenty-five of the dogs, including a litter of puppies, were living in the owner’s home; about 60 other dogs were living in dilapidated, dirt-bottom, open air pens on a separate near-by property. Several of the dogs are very old; others are skinny with ribs and hip bones showing, one dog has a leg injury, and most of the dogs appear to have fleas and possibly other internal and external parasites. In a preliminary visit this past weekend, a HSMO investigator found two of the dogs in need of immediate veterinary care, one of the dogs had been entangled in a fence, and the other dog had serious face, chest and leg injuries from a possible attack by other dogs.

The full story will air on Animal Planet’s series Confessions: Animal Hoarding. The series explores stories of people who own more pets than they can care for. The problem of animal hoarding is little understood, but far more common than most people realize. More than 3,000 cases are reported annually, and at least ten times that number that go unreported. The series brings families together to find humane solutions that work for both pets and people. The dogs rescued yesterday were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Headquarters in St. Louis City for triage, rehabilitation and eventual adoption for as many of them as possible.
