Isabel ~ Our New Kitten

I promised a picture of Jeffie and Isabel together and here it is. I know it's not all that great, but neither one of them would hold still! Even though Isabel looks plenty small in the picture, she was even smaller when she arrived at our place. Mama says she's growing like a weed.

Can you believe people just dump kittens and puppies like this? Even though I was abandoned as a little puppy, I still find it hard to believe. Around here Isabel could've easily ended up as lunch for a coyote. She was sure lucky to find our farm!

Anyway... Jeffie adores Isabel, though she's so little he's not exactly sure what to do with her. They chase each other and take walks around the yard. She doesn't really patrol with him... can't keep up.

I've heard Mama tell Daddy that this all proves her point... that Jeffie needs a puppy of his own. She's been lobbying for awhile. Lucy and I are pretty old and we don't play a lot any more. Jeffie has so much energy that he sometimes overwhelms us. Plus Mama says there are so many pups that need homes ... but Daddy says his limit is 2 dogs. Yeah, you read that right. 2 dogs. And we already have 3. So I think Isabel will have to do for spicing up Jeffie's life.

Our New Kitten has Cooties!

Okay, I admit I'm not sure what Cooties are, but I'm pretty sure our new kitten has them. How do I know this? Our cat, Skeeter, doesn't want anything to do with her. If she tries to nap on a chair with Skeeter, Skeeter might allow her to stay there... but she sure doesn't like the kitten to touch her!

Actually, I don't like the kitten to touch me either. However, sometimes I do watch her to see what she's up to... out of just the corner of my eye, of course. She's pretty crazy, chasing leaves, playing with her own feet. Now what is up with that? I mean, I like my feet but I'd rather play with toys!

Mama finally managed to get some photos of the new kitten and there's one showing above. Mama got pretty frustrated because it's hard to catch Isabel holding still for a picture. Oh, that's the new kitten's name: Isabel. Izzy for short.

Jeffie adores Isabel and I'll post a picture of the two of them in the next day or two. I get the fascination, kind of, but he actually touches her! Yikes!

What is Canine Influenza? Should I vaccinate my dogs?

With all the news media coverage about influenza this year, we've been wondering about canine influenza. What is the dog flu? If our dogs get it, can they spread it to people? Should we vaccinate our dogs for dog flu?

According to Dr. Steve Schwartz, Director of the Veterinary Medical Centers for the Humane Society of Missouri, canine influenza was first identified in 2003 in a group of Florida racing greyhounds and has since been confirmed in veterinary clinics, shelters and kennels in 30 states. It appears to have originated when the horse influenza virus which it closely resembles crossed over to infect dogs. Typically when a virus jumps from one species to another the second species is unable to transmit it. Canine influenza (transmission from horse to dog to other dogs) and swine influenza (transmission from swine to human to other humans) are unique exceptions.

Dr. Schwartz notes that the human and canine flu viruses are unrelated to one another. Moreover there is no evidence to suggest that the canine influenza virus can spread to people. All ages and breeds of dogs are equally susceptible to contracting the disease. The infection is easily transmitted by coughing, sneezing, direct dog-to -dog contact or via contaminated surfaces. Flu-like symptoms (sneezing, discharge from the eyes and nose and persistent coughing) develop within 2 to 6 days of exposure. Most dogs recover uneventfully although up to 8% may die of complications.

If you board your dog, have him/her professionally groomed or regularly visit your local dog park, Dr. Schwartz recommends that your dog receive the canine influenza vaccination. The canine influenza vaccine, H3N8, has been showen to be safe and effective in decreasing the severity and duration of the cough while also dramatically reducing the incidence of complications. According to Dr. Schwartz, the vaccine can be given to dogs 6 weeks of age and older and is administered twice initially, 2 to 3 weeks apart, then annually.

The vaccine is currently available through all three of the Humane Society of Missouri
Veterinary Medical Centers. Read more about canine infuenza at the Humane Society of Missouri's web site. Check with your own vet for more information in making a decision to vaccinate your dogs.

Kitten Raised by Dogs

I know, I know... I haven't been woofing much lately other than announcements of pet events, animal rescue, and For Love of a Dog new items. By the time my paws type those, they're tired, so I have to go take a power nap.

However, this morning I do want to tell you about the new kitten at our house. I'm not good at guessing feline age, but she's probably about 3 months old. She just showed up and we think she was dumped. Skeeter is not at all impressed, but the goldies (Jeffie and Lucy) are enthralled. Personally, I haven't made up my mind about her. One thing is for sure: she loves us.

Have you heard the phrase "raised by wolves?" Well, if this kitten sticks around - and it sure looks like she's gonna - she'll be raised by dogs. Skeeter won't have anything to do with her. So far she follows us everywhere. That sort of gets on my nerves. Afterall, I do like just a bit of privacy.

Mama said she'd try to snap a photo soon to post because the new kitty really is pretty cute. Very scrawny, long and lanky, and more lonely than hungry.

What I don't understand is how humans can dump pets.
Woof! Woof!

Puppy Mill Bust in Phelps County, MO

Yesterday the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued more than 100 dogs from an unlicensed, substandard puppy mill in Phelps County, Missouri. Two cats and 100 dogs were rescued. Dog breeds include mainly Pomeranians, Jack Russell Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas and Poodle mix breeds.
.
The animals’ kennels were observed to be caked with feces and urine. A number of the dogs appeared in need of veterinary and grooming care. The animals were housed in too few cages for their number and had limited access to solid footing as the cages had wire floors which can cause paw and leg problems. Several puppies and a mother were in a filthy, dirt floor pen with the only water source an algae-lined bucket of mosquito-infested water.

The rescued dogs have been taken to the Humane Society’s Headquarters on Macklind Avenue in
St. Louis for triage. The animals will remain in the custody of the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing scheduled for October 8 in Phelps County.

If custody of the dogs is awarded to the Humane Society of Missouri, as many of the animals as possible will be made available for adoption. Persons interested in adopting one of these dogs should visit the
Humane Society of Missouri website to check availability and adoption location.

Federal Dog Fighting Ring Raid & Rescue Update

Monday, September 14, the Humane Society of Missouri [click to see video] confirmed that guilty pleas have been entered in connection to the July 8, 2009 multi-state federal dog fighting raid that resulted in the rescue of more than 500 fighting dogs. Federal agents made 26 arrests and dogs were rescued in 8 states.

This rescue operation is the largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history. The Humane Society of Missouri participated in the 18-month investigation and led the subsequent rescue and shelter operations, working in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Marshals Service and the United States Attorney.

Four eastern Missouri men, Robert Hackman of Foley, Teddy Kiriakidis of Leasburg, Ronald Creech of Leslie and Michael Morgan of Hannibal pled guilty today in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to charges connected to the dog fighting raid. Another man arrested in connection with the dog fighting raid, Jack Ruppel of Eldon pled guilty to charges on September 4 in federal court in Jefferson City.

“We can confirm that five of the individuals charged with this gruesome form of animal abuse are being brought to justice,” said Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri. “Today’s guilty pleas raise awareness that dog fighting is unacceptable, inhumane and illegal and will not be tolerated. The unprecedented scale of this investigation and rescue operation should alert the entire nation to what a horrible crime dog fighting is and what a dangerous and serious affect it can have on animals and communities.”

Warnick continued, “We sincerely hope these guilty pleas will result in sentencing that sends the message that this form of animal abuse will no longer be tolerated. Humane Society of Missouri staff and our many partners have selflessly sacrificed much of their personal lives in the pursuit of this investigation and the care of these dogs. We fervently desire that this historic effort marks the beginning of the end to dog fighting in the United States.”

“This was the largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history, but it will not be the last,” warned Michael Kaste, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in St. Louis. “This case sets precedence for the FBI along with our local, state and federal partners to aggressively root out underground dog fighting rings where people have absolutely no qualms about torturing man’s best friend for money and entertainment.”

Information from a 2008 dog fighting case investigated by members of the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force led to the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Tim Rickey, director of the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, and Kyle Held, Humane Society of Missouri animal cruelty investigator, spent countless hours providing consultation and dog rescue services throughout the ensuing multi-state investigation. At times, when other agencies had doubts about continuing the investigation, Rickey’s and Held’s unrelenting commitment to ending dog fighting kept the investigation alive.

On July 8, Rickey and the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force coordinated the crime-scene evidence gathering and animal rescue efforts in five states: Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, and Oklahoma. Dogs also were rescued in Nebraska, Arkansas and Mississippi. The multi-location evidence and animal recovery operation required professional animal rescuers and a variety of specialized animal transport vehicles from the Humane Society of Missouri as well as those from the ASPCA and Humane Society of the United States.

“Our rescue team is one of the most experienced and best trained and equipped teams in the country,” said Rickey. “We were able to rescue, document and transport more than 400 dogs from 22 sites in 24 hours. There was simply no way we would leave even one of these dogs behind. We were committed to making sure none would ever be forced to fight again.”

Along with Humane Society of Missouri’s dedicated professional shelter staff, more than 265 volunteers from 22 organizations across the U.S. have given more than 7,600 hours of time to care for these animals. “We are very thankful to every person who has helped us care for these dogs so far,” said Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations for the Humane Society of Missouri and director of the emergency shelter. “It is a tragedy that because of mistreatment by humans for financial gain and so-called sport, many dogs from animal fighting situations may not ever be able to be placed in permanent homes.”

“We are committed to giving dogs who have come from such horrible abuse the absolute best chance for a good life,” said Hill. “We are relying on our fellow rescue groups to help us find permanent placement for as many of these dogs as possible. More animals were rescued from this situation than ever before, more than any one organization can handle alone. We are asking for help from qualified groups of all sizes and all parts of the country.”

You can help:
  • Qualified rescue groups or experienced individuals who are interested in providing permanent homes for the dogs should contact the Humane Society of Missouri, 314-802-5712.
  • Contact your state legislator and let them know you are concerned about the issue of dog fighting in your area.
If you live in Missouri you can also get involved through the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

For Love of a Dog supports the Humane Society of MO and the MO Alliance for Animal Legislation.
