90 Yorkies Rescued from Missouri Ozarks Puppy Mill

Sometimes its hard to be from Missouri, the state that is home to way too many puppy mills. This is one of those times.

The Humane Society of Missouri recently rescued more than 90 Yorkies from a deplorable puppy mill here in the Ozarks. The photographs and video I've seen on television have broken my heart.

Housed in filthy, overcrowded, wire-bottom cages, their coats were so over-grown and matted they couldn’t see or walk. More than 90 Yorkshire terriers lived their entire lives with little social interaction and no veterinary care. They needed help. Friday the 13th turned out to be their lucky day!

The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force drove more than 500 miles and spent more than 19 hours rescuing these pitiful dogs from a substandard puppy mill in Greene County.

When they arrived back in St. Louis, a triage team of veterinarians, animals care staff and groomers went to work. They found dental disease; open wounds; ear, skin and bone infections; malnutrition and dehydration. Nearly 50 lbs. of disgusting, noxious, matted hair was shaved from these dogs. Each was given a clean, warm, comfy place to sleep with plenty of food and water, perhaps for the first time in their lives.

They need vaccinations, several weeks of medications and continuing grooming. Several may need amputation of severely infected legs. Visit the HSMO to view on-scene video, photos and for the complete rescue story. As you watch the video consider the comments of a neighbor of the puppy mill, who said during television news coverage that those folks loved these dogs and took very good care of them.

The owners of this breeding facility in Pleasant Hope, MO were arrested and the HSMO is working diligently with Greene County officials toward prosecution and conviction.

If you're not already a member or supporter of your Humane Society or ASPCA, join now to help them continue this very important work.
