Today is National Puppy Day

Now here's a holiday all of us at For Love of a Dog can get behind! Today is National Puppy Day!

A special day to celebrate the love and magic that puppies bring to our lives. And to promote adoption of rescue and shelter dogs everywhere. It's a day to help save abandoned puppies and educate the public about puppy mills, as well as to push the agenda of a nation of puppy-free pet stores.

There's no need to buy a puppy from a pet store when the shelters and rescue groups are full of adoptable puppies. Love is waiting for you...

Humane Society of Missouri Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Webster Groves district teacher, Mary Ann Howard. She's been named the 2010 Humane Teacher of the Year by the Humane Society of Missouri. The announcement was made in a surprise ceremony at her school on February 16, 2010. Following the ceremony there was a celebration at the Clark School Library and included many dogs, rabbits, a mini horse and a mini donkey.

The Humane Society of Missouri recognized Mary Ann for her achievements incorporating humane, environmental and character education into her class curricula, and for leading an after-school community service club benefitting animals called Club HOPE (Helping Our Pets and Environment).

For the past 27 years, the Humane Society of Missouri has had the pleasure of acknowledging area teachers who strive to incorporate humane education into their daily lessons and activities and more importantly serve as humane role models demonstrating values of kindness, respect and compassion for animals and people alike.

Mrs. Howard was chosen for her concerted efforts to teach invaluable animal-related character education lessons to her students in the Webster Groves School District for more than two decades. Mary Ann has been leading an after-school kids club called Club HOPE for the last two years. Club HOPE membership at Clark School is now 83 students. Under her guidance, her students have completed numerous and remarkable community service projects benefitting the animals in our community including various donation drives, crafting blankets and toys for homeless animals, donating to various animal rescue groups and through community education at neighborhood events

HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force rescues 131 domestic rabbits and 26 other animals in Franklin County

On February 25, 2010, working in cooperation with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force today is rescuing 157 animals from a property in Franklin County near St. Clair, Missouri. The animals include: 131 domestic rabbits, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 1 guinea pig, 3 baby goats, 5 doves, 7 chickens, 2 pigeons and 1 duck.

All of the animals were living in filthy conditions. The rabbits were housed in raised wire-bottom cages with feces piled up high enough to come through the bottom of the cages. Many of their cages had no shelter from the weather. The dogs and fowl were living outside, also with no shelter and the only sources of water were frozen. The cats, goats and guinea pig, which were inside a home on the property, also were living in extremely filthy conditions. The goats appear to be suffering from an upper respiratory illness.

Aware of a possibly neglectful situation, the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department which conducted an investigation resulting in the Sheriff’s Department serving a warrant to remove the animals.

The rescued rabbits, dogs, cats and guinea pig were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Headquarters shelter in St. Louis City for triage and care. The goats, dove, chickens, pigeons, and duck were be taken to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Mo.

As of March 10, the rabbits are stable after receiving fluids for dehydration. They have been treated for ear mites and other bacterial ear infections. Approximately 25% of them are being treated with systemic antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection. They continue to receive excellent care from Humane Society of Missouri staff and the House Rabbit Society of Missouri.

HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force rescues 11 horses and 2 mules near death in Gasconade County

On January 26, 2010, working in cooperation with the Gasconade County Sheriff’s Department, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued 11 horses and two mules from a property near Rosebud, Missouri. The horses appeared to be severely underweight and had no access to fresh water. Twleve deceased equine also were found on the property.

On February 10, the Humane Society of Missouri received custody of these emaciated horses and neglected mules. . Many had teeth and hoof problems, external parasites and severe rain rot (a skin problem). The cost of their care has already exceeed $10,000. Twelve deceased horses also were found on the property with one carcass in the only available water source.

As of this week, the horses have been treated for internal and external parasite infestations. Their skin conditions are improving but this will be a slow process as they start to grow new healthy hair coats. As they have gained weight and start to feel better, their personalities have started to show, their heads are held higher and their appetites have grown stronger. The stallions will need to gain additional weight before gelding (neuter) them and making them available for adoption. Many of the horses had sharp points and other dental issues which have all been corrected and treated. One of the geldings, Ruger, had a broken tooth that caused a painful and infected pocket in his lower jaw. He has had surgery to have the tooth removed and is recovering.

Some of the equine (horses and mules) that had less weight to gain will soon be available for adoption.
For more information on adopting the animals as they become available visit www.longmeadowrescueranch.org.

Black Dog Pearl Necklace Dog Lover Jewelry

Black Pearl Dog is a name commonly given to black shelter dogs who are commonly the last to be adopted, if they're adopted at all. Animal shelters are increasingly outspoken about what is called Black Dog Syndrome. This black dog necklace was inspired by the advocacy of many who are trying to rescue black dogs.

Absolutely charming Czech glass dog heads with lovely details are featured in this black dog necklace. Black Labrador Retriever dogs may come first to mind, but these dog beads could represent almost any dog including most retrievers, greyhounds, and more.

I've hand wire wrapped beautiful creamy white Freshwater Pearls with gold. A gold filigree ball seems to be the center of a tug of war between these pups. Perfect handcrafted gifts for a dog lover friend or for yourself are available at For Love of a Dog Jewelry.

At the time of his death, his license was current and he had had all of his shots. Eulogy on the Dog by George Graham Vest

Below are excerpts from attorney and US Senator George Graham Vest's Eulogy on the dog speech, given while Vest was representing a man who sued another for the killing of his dog, Drum. The trial took place in a small Missouri town. According to the recollection of Thomas T. Crittenden, counsel for the defendant and later governor of Missouri, it was as perfect a piece of oratory as was ever heard. Court, jury, lawyers, and the audience were all entranced. Vest won the case and the jury awarded his client $500 which was in excess of the maximum allowable damages of $150. George Graham Vest died 1904.

Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer.

When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in ints journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his grave side will the noble dog be found, his head beneath his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.
