Sherman and the Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie

Sherman communing with fowl.
Another Thanksgiving is under (and stretching) our belts.  The canines enjoyed their turkey bits.  In fact, as soon as Gary pulled the big roaster out of the mudroom closet, Tucker took up residence in the kitchen.  Close enough to keep a nose on the essence of turkey, but far enough away to avoid getting tripped over.  (We don't call him stealth dog for nothing.)

As we gathered at the table we all shared memories from times past and had a good chuckle at Sherman's expense.  Shermie traveled the rainbow bridge years ago, but still provides us with great entertainment.  One Thanksgiving, family and friends were in the dining room awaiting their dessert.  Imagine my shock when I got a look at the pies sitting on the kitchen counter.  Both had been sampled.  Great gaping empty spaces where pie should be.  Sherman had obviously enjoyed the pumpkin more than the apple pie.

Honestly, my first thought was to pitch the pies into the trash.  However, Gary prevailed.  I cut around the missing doggie portions.  Sliced smaller than usual pieces and served the pie.  No one was the wiser.  Well, actually, I was wiser.  I never again left food unattended on the counter while Sherman was alive.

Irish Setter Dog Jewelry and Gifts at For Love of a Dog

Irish Setter Dog Breed Pin at
For Love of a Dog Jewelry and Gifts
Okay, raise your paw if you watched the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving day.  (All paws to up at our house.).   It's a family tradition at For Love of a Dog.  We may miss some (or a lot) of the parade, but we never miss the dog show.  This year we were rooting for the American Staffordshire to win best in show, because we think that dog breed can use all the positive press it can get.  However, the truth is that we couldn't decide who we thought would win.  We certainly enjoyed host, John O'Hurley's comments and passionate comments about the Irish Setter.   I'm sure Irish Setter lovers were pretty happy with the winner, too.

So, in honor of the winner, today I'm highlighting the Irish Setter dog breed jewelry and gifts at For Love of a Dog.  We offer handmade necklaces, bracelets, pins and even Christmas tree ornaments.  My personal favorite is our pin.

Fabulous Irish Setter dog pin. These handmade dog breed pins (brooches) are like no other I've ever seen. Entirely made by hand by an American artist. First a hand carved sculpture is created which is then used to create a mould. Cast in resin, then hand air brush painted. They are then given a protective coating of lacquer so you can enjoy this dog breed jewelry for many years. Every effort is made to adhere to AKC and UKC dog breed standards. Frankly, they are amazing works of dog art. I've tried to show the sculptural details in the photos of this Irish Setter dog breed pin.

Dog Song: A Doggy Christmas Surprise - Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving weekend at the For Love of a Dog household includes decorating the Christmas tree.  Admittedly, at our house the dogs mostly just watch the humans do all the work, though they enjoy the special snacks that are involved.  However, I'm hoping they'll be inspired by this fabulous video story made by a dog training school in Budapest, Hungary.  Yes, the same folks who did A Doggy Summer - the amazing beach party dog video.  Let's face it, almost 7 million viewers can't be wrong.   So, even if you've already seen it (and I'm not telling how many times I have)...  Sit.  Stay.  Rock around the Christmas tree with some great dogs trained in the Mirror Method.  Oh!  And have a Happy Thanksgiving, too!

White Poodle Dog Jewelry - Dog Bone Artisan Necklace

White Dog Bone Necklace from
For Love of a Dog Jewelry & Gifts
This doggie looks very much like a poodle I used to know.  Incredibly charming, this is an adorable white dog and dog bone necklace in classic black and white. The focal point is the handmade lamp work curly haired white dog. Darlin three dimensional white dog could be a poodle, a schnauzer, a terrier, and definitely a mixed breed mutt dog. So cute. Handmade by a Colorado artist in her glass studio.  You'll love the sculptural details in this little piece of dog art.

To create the dog necklace I've hand wire wrapped this whimsical dog with gold jeweler's wire and gemstone beads. Highly polished Black Onyx is combined with three dimensional lamp work glass white dog ones. Extra long and extra fun.

This dog necklace is perfect for anyone who loves dogs. Designed to inspire compliments and conversation about, what else, the love of dogs. A perfect jewelry gift for a true dog lover, someone who loves a white Schnauzer, Terrier, Poodle, Bichon Frise, or a mixed breed dog. Save 500 Gulf Region Dogs and Cats with the Click of your Mouse

As a member of the DogTime Blog Network, from time to time I'm asked to write about a specific topic which always has to do with animal welfare.  Today it gives me great pleasure to draw your attention to an extraordinary project that DogTime has undertaken.

The Gulf region of our country has been in the news for months now as our nation witnesses the largest oil spill in our history.  And this is not the first time Talking Dogs has blogged about this issue.  We learn more every day about the consequences of this tragedy, including its impact on the local economies of that area.  So many people are now out of work, losing their homes, and wondering how to simply get by.

When people cannot feed and clothe themselves, keep a roof over their head, and take care of their children, often pets bear a part of the hardship.  Today record numbers of pets are being surrendered to local shelters. Because these facilities are at maximum capacity, some animals will spend days or weeks in a lonely kennel.  They must endure the trama of losing their families and all too often face euthanasia.

For 500 of those at-risk pets, DogTime plans to ensure a happier fate. DogTime is hoping to help these local shelters by providing food, technology resources, and transportation resources so these pets can find their forever home.  If you haven't already heard, Pepsi is giving away over $1,000,000 this year to fund great causes through their Pepsi Refresh Project.  DogTime has entered the contest for the month of November.

It's ridiculously easy to help them accomplish this.  All you have to do is vote to support the DogTime project to save 500 Gulf area dogs and cats.  Vote here: http://dogblogs.c.topica.com/maaonTBab1piJciVdPTbaehwZY/

You can quickly and easily sign in through Facebook Connect or just as easily create your personal login.

Please note: You can vote EVERY DAY for 10 different projects in the contest.

It just takes a few minutes and a couple clicks of your mouse.  Be a part of positive change in the Gulf region and help to save the lives of 500 dogs and cats.  Vote now!

Pug Dog Breed Jewelry - Handmade Necklace and Dog Bone Earrings Gift Set

Pug Dog Necklace and Dog Bone Earrings from
For Love of a Dog Jewelry and Gifts
Okay, I admit it. I am so crazy about my Pug dog breed jewelry that I actually think about adding a Pug to our family. They are such adorable dogs. Take a look at this one of a kind Pug dog breed jewelry set that I handcrafted.
There's simply a certain charm to Colorado lampwork artist Beverly Taylor's whimsical animals that makes me smile every time. I'm a big fan of her three dimensional sculptural lampwork and I think you will be, too, when you see this Pug dog pendant.

Perfect little Pug dog has the cutest face and color details. In handcrafting this dog lover necklace, I hand wire wrapped this charming Pug dog with silver jeweler's wire and lots of lovely creamy Riverstone gemstone beads, plus some three dimensional lampwork dog bones. Coordinating dog bone and gemstone dangle earrings are included in this set.

Of course, this great little puppy dog could also represent a mixed breed dog, too. In any case, this unique dog jewelry set would make a great addition to any dog lover's jewelry box.

New Book: Dog, Inc by John Woestendiek Explores Cloning Man's Best Friend

Okay, I admit that from time to time I've said I want to clone Lucy.  Lucy is my heart dog and I honestly can't imagine my life without her.  (I also admit that I sometimes wish I'd let her have a litter of puppies, just so I could have another small piece of her.  But that's another story.)

At any rate, the sheer cost of such a venture is more than daunting.  Plus, the more I thought about it, the more I questioned the whole idea.  If I were able to have Lucy cloned... what would I accomplish?  I'd have a physical replica of her.  Wouldn't I?  And is it her physical beauty that's important?  Nope.   As I told the author of Dog, Inc, John Woestendiek, I don't think they've yet figured out to clone souls.

I have not yet read John's new book Dog, Inc.: The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man’s Best Friend, but I've signed up for the Amazon pre-order and am looking forward to December 30 when it will be released.  You may be familiar with his beloved ohmidog! blog.  I figure if the writing is half as good as his current Travels with Ace series, then the book is absolutely not to be missed.  Sounds like a barking good read for any dog lover.

Here's what the Dog, Inc: The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man's Best Friend web site has to say:
Ever Wish You Could Clone Your Dog?  You can, for $100,000 or so. But whether you should is another question —one that’s investigated and explored in Dog, Inc.: The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man’s Best Friend. What Stiff did for the dead and Fast Food Nation did for the burger, Dog, Inc. does for the stranger-than-fiction world of commercial dog cloning.

It all began with a pit bull named Booger. Former beauty queen Bernann McKinney was so distraught over the death of her dog, whom she regarded as her guardian and savior, that she paid $50,000 to RNL Bio for the chance to bring her beloved companion back to life. The result was five new Boogers—the first successful commercial cloning of a canine—delivered in 2008, along with a slew of compelling questions about the boundaries of science, commerce, and ethics. Blending shocking investigative reporting with colorful anecdotes, Pulitzer Prize-winning John Woestendiek takes readers behind the scenes of this emerging industry.

But Dog, Inc. isn't just a book about pets. Nor is it just a book about science. Rather it's a fascinating look at how our emotional needs are bending the reaches of science and technology, as well as a study of this uncharted territory. With our pet obsession climbing to new heights and our scientific abilities even more so, this combination raises a serious concern: Are we crossing the boundary of controlling science in the name of science, in the name of love, in the name of merchandising—or a blend of all three?

Missouri Puppy Mill Laws and Prop B Repeal

Lucy doesn't think much of
the Missouri Farm Bureau and
MO Lawmakers who want to repeal
the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act
Here's what is currently legal for commercial puppy breeders in Missouri:
  • It is legal to keep a breeding dog in a wire cage six inches longer than her body.
  • It is legal keep that breeding dog confined in that cage for her entire life .
  • It is legal to allow that breeding dog to be outside during the extremes of winter.
  • It is legal to allow animals in cages stacked above to defecate on the animals below .
  • It is legal to never call on a veterinarian to examine an animal.
  • It is legal to abandon or kill dogs once they are no longer wanted.
The Missouri Farm Bureau and the Alliance for Truth thinks such standards for dogs are just fine.

The majority of Missouri voters disagree and approved Proposition B on November 2.  The measure, which calls for dog breeders to provide more humane conditions for dogs, passed on Tuesday by 61,000 votes, or a 51.6 percent margin.  Now some Republican lawmakers are trying to undo the will of the people.

Obviously, some Missouri lawmakers care neither about dogs nor democracy.

Controversy Continues with MO Prop B Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act

It ain't over until it's over.  Right.  And it is not over.
Let me tell you what a joy it is to live in the great state of Missouri, where state lawmakers don't realize that this is a democracy.

According to several news sources Missouri legislators don't care what the people think.  Missouri lawmakers, in both the House and Senate, say they will support efforts by dog breeders and agricultural groups to repeal or dilute Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, passed by voters November 2.

"We will start working on that issue immediately," said Senator-elect Mike Parson, whose district includes more than 150 licensed breeding operations. The next legislative session begins Jan. 5.

Proposition B, which will put new restrictions on state dog breeders, passed by substantial margins in urban areas, but failed in 100 of the state's 114 counties. Overall, it got 51.6% of the vote.  The puppy mill lobby, largely represented by rural Missouri interests,  is screaming about the narrow margin of passage.

According to Representative Tom Loehner, chairman of the Missouri House Agriculture Policy Committee:  "We're in discussions with a few people and trying to get together with ag groups, representatives and senators and also our legal people on exactly what we can do and what our options are."

These are the same people who talk quite a bit about "the will of the people."  Seems they see no disrespect for the people and democratic process in rejecting a majority of Missouri voters who voted in fabor of legislation requiring dog breeders to provide animals with adequate space, food, water, exercise and medical care.

The way they see it: The measure failed in more than 100 of the state’s 114 counties, so the vote shouldn’t count.

Huh?  Since when did issues become decided by a county by county vote?  Last time I checked, Missouri was a constitutional democracy and statewide initiative referendums were decided by a majority of state voters.  As this one was.

We voted.  The majority rules.  Or at least it is supposed to.

Update on the Horses Rescued in Andrew County, Missouri

An update from the Humane Society of Missouri about their rescue of 33 equine from an Andrew County, Missouri farm.

“We are hand feeding our youngest arrival, mini-horse Trinket,” says Amanda Mullen, director, Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. “She gets a special ‘mash’ and drinks plenty of water. Our employees really enjoy feeding her and watching her get better every day.”

Even Saturn, a 2 1/2 year old colt who needed emergency treatment before coming to Longmeadow, is now at the ranch under the watchful eye of Mullen and her staff.

Over the past few days, each new arrival has been examined by an equine veterinarian who set individual courses of treatment. The horses and donkeys will receive small amounts of high-quality hay several times a day, continuous access to fresh water and begin the painstaking process of hoof trimming.  “It takes a long time to repair the damage caused by the neglect these animals suffered,” said Mullen. “Their hooves can only be trimmed a little at a time to give their ankles time to adjust. And, we must take care not to feed them too much as their systems become used to regular, nutritious feed.”

Horse Jewelry makes a great Gift for Equine Lovers and Cowgirls

For Love of a Dog Jewelry
For Love of a Dog Jewelry is not just about dogs.  We love horses, too, and know our lives would not be complete without our equine.  We also know that any equestrian would smile if they received this handmade Black Beauty horse necklace as a gift.

The necklace shown at left features a wonderful sculptural artisan lampwork horse head hand made by Beverly Taylor in her Colorado studio.  To create this horse necklace I've hand wire wrapped this charming equine art pendant with sterling silver wire and lots of rare natural black Tourmaline gemstone beads.  Not flat black like black onyx gemstone beads, black Tourmaline has a bit if rainbow irredescence that adds some sparkle and pizazz.

This is a horse necklace perfect for any equestrian. Horse jewelry makes a great gift for any equine lover or cowgirl, not to mention a real conversation starter. Please remember these lampwork horse necklaces are one of a kind handcrafted jewelry creations.

Horses and Goats Rescued in Andrew County Missouri

The Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Taskforce has been busy the past few days.  On November 11 they received a request for assistance near Guilford, MO.

Working in cooperation with the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department, they began the rescue of 32 horses, 4 mini-horses and 2 goats. The horses were severely underweight and had no access to food or fresh water. Six recently deceased horses also were found on the property  and another horse present was so desperately ill, an independent veterinarian recommended it be humanely euthanized on the spot.    Starving mares could no longer provide milk to their malnourished foals. Two of the horses were so unstable, they had to be taken to a nearby equine hospital for emergency treatment. One did not survive.

According to Andrew County Sheriff Bryan Atkins, an independent veterinarian who visited the property Sunday determined the horses were malnourished and would not survive the winter; he recommended removal of the animals as soon as possible. The Sheriff then contacted the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force to assist with the investigation and possible rescue of the horses and goats. Subsequently, the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department served a warrant to enter the property and, upon veterinary recommendation, removed the animals.

The rescued animals have been taken to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Mo. The animals will remain in the custody of the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 29, 2010 in Savannah, Mo. If custody of the animals is awarded to the Humane Society of Missouri, as many of the animals as possible will be made available for adoption. Due to their poor condition, it may be several months following the disposition hearing before many of the animals would be available for adoption.

Black Dog Second Chance in East Amherst NY

Black Dog Second Chance in East Amherst NY is a registered not for profit incorporation that functions as a rescue to save homeless dogs and cats. Funded entirely by donations, they are a caring group of individuals that are all non-paid volunteers who spend countless hours every week just to save homeless dogs and cats who would otherwise perish in shelters.

Black Dog Second Chance pride themselves with matching the best pets with the best homes. They insist they are not a rescue who finds dogs for people, they find the right homes for dogs. They really want the adoption to work, FOREVER, so they are very careful about their placements, and because of that, they enjoy good reputation and few animal returns.

All of their dogs are healthy, vet checked, up to date on shots, microchipped and heartworm tested (when relevant), wormed and flea treated, temperament checked and come with all necessary paperwork and an adoption contract to prove it. They even come with a free first vet visit and a free dog training video. Some of their dogs even come with a free training class to continue the obedience they have already received while in the care of Black Dog Second Chance.

Black dog Second chance does not operate a shelter. They place all of their available pets in loving foster home. There is no facility for you to come and view the dogs and cats, rather they offer a monthly adoption event. If you just can't wait that long, you are encouraged to complete an online adoption application and Black Dog Second Chance will schedule a home visit. All applications are considered in the order that the applications are received and those that are the best matches for that particular dog or cat.

Black Dog Second Chance does not adopt outside of NY State because they require a home visit for all of their animals. They prefer adopters live within a 45 minute drive from the Buffalo area. Some exceptions for longer drive time may be made for our less adoptable animals (but never for puppies, small dogs or kittens).   For more information, visit Black Dog Second Chance on the web.

Dog Jewelry for People - Shaggy Dog Lover Pin and Necklace

Shaggy Dog Pin and Necklace from
For Love of a Dog Jewelry
For Love of a Dog Jewelry offers many dog breeds in our handcrafted dog breed jewelry. Though this was designed to be a Bouvier des Flandres dog, this sweet little shaggy dog could easily represent other dog breeds, and, of course, many mutts. A Cairn Terrier comes to mind right away.

In this handcrafted shaggy dog necklace I've used this dog pin (brooch) as a pendant. With an sweet face and that adorable little tongue, he's frolicking off somewhere fun. This shaggy dog pin (brooch) is handmade by a Michigan porcelain ceramic artist. Truly hand sculpted using no moulds, the pin is ceramic porcelain and signed by the artist. There's just the slightest teal green cast to the little dog's fur coat. I've added a gold converter to use the pin as a pendant.

The necklace is composed of wonderfully earthy colored Fancy Jasper gemstone beads that I've accented with gold. You'll notice the sweet little three dimensional dogbone at the end of the necklace.

Such a versatile piece of dog breed jewelry. Wear this shaggy dog necklace as it is, or easily and simply removed the pendant to wear as a pin. In fact, you can even wear other pins you own on this piece. A perfect gift for anyone who loves a Bouvier des Flandres dog and one of a kind artisan jewelry.

  • Facility Teams - work with a professional in a visitation, education or healthcare setting.
There is no charge for a Canine Companions assistance dog. Individual participants in our program are not responsible for any of the substantial costs involved in the lengthy process of breeding, raising, and training each Canine Companions assistance dog.  A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Canine Companions is funded by private contributions from individuals; gifts from businesses, civic groups, and service clubs; grants from corporations and foundations; and ongoing fundraising activities such as special events and mailings.

People with physical or developmental disabilities who can demonstrate that a Canine Companions assistance dog will enhance their independence or their quality of life are qualified to apply. Also eligible are professionals working for organizations that provide physical or mental health care to clients who will benefit from interaction with a facility dog.  CCI can only accept a limited number of applications per year. Although many individuals with disabilities are eligible and in need of an assistance dog, CCI will determine and select those individuals where the tasks provided by CCI's highly trained dogs will be of the greatest benefit.

For more information about Canine Companions for Indepedence visit them on the web. You'll find more information about their intensive training program, as well as how to apply for a Canine Companion.

Honey Bear is 8 1/2 years old;  weighs about 65 pounds and is a spayed female Labrador Retriever mix.  She's black with a bit of what we call sugar at our house.  (Some white).  Honey Bear is playful and very obedient. An outside dog, she is accustomed to staying in a yard and loves a kiddie pool in the summer. She is great with children, but not good with cats. Honey Bear loves to give and receive affection.

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a private, non profit (501C), "no-kill" facility serving a tri-county area. The Shelter is funded entirely by sales at their Dogwood Thrift Shop , membership, donations, and adoption fees. Dogwood Animal Shelter provides to the community a low cost spay & neuter program, as well as a free educational program designed to promote empathy, humane treatment, and responsible pet ownership. Dog Book: Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin

Awhile back I was fortunate to catch an episode of Oprah - the one when she had Oogy and his family on to talk about his life.  Now Larry Levin has written his story in Oogy:   The Dog Only a Family Could Love. This would make a great Christmas gift for any dog lover.

As a puppy, Oogy was used as bait for dog fighting dogs.  Though he survived mindboggling brutality, he has scar tissue coering the left side of his face and he is missing an ear.  He was barely alive when rescued during a dog fighting police raid.  In spite of his start in life, he maintains a gentle, forgiving nature and the inner beauty inherent in canines.

Referring to emotionally scarred people, author Levin says:  If this dog can go through the hell hre did and emerge capable of giving and generating as much love as he does, so can they."

I'm reminded of the quotation:  To err is human;  to forgive is canine.  Oogy and his story can teach all of us much in the way we cope, heal, forgive, and, of course, love.

Black Dog Necklace from
For Love of a Dog Jewelry
Just can't fit another dog into your household even though your heart cries out for a black dog?  How about sharing your love of black dogs with a black dog necklace.  It's a barking good way to spark conversations about the tragic plight of black dogs in shelters awaiting their forever home.

Here is just one of the handcrafted dog necklace in our collection of black dog and animal advocacy jewelry. Featuring these amazing Czech glass dog heads that are double sided and very detailed. These black dog heads always remind me of Labrador Retriever dogs, but could be many other dog breeds, including mutts. From them dangles a large puffy Black Onyx heart. Necklace is composed of lots of Austrian Crystals in bright, rich red and accented with gold round beads. The extender chain is accented with a darling little three dimensional gold dog bone.

This is an incredibly charming handcrafted dog lover necklace and would make a great gift for anyone who loves dogs . Barking good gift for anyone involved in shelter volunteer work or dog rescue. At For Love of a Dog Jewelry, we like to think that our black dog jewelry helps to raise awareness about Black Dog Syndrome, which, in turn, helps rescue and adoption efforts for black dogs in animal shelters all across the United States.

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog

Lucy and Tucker
Senior dogs at For Love of a Dog Jewelry
November is national Adopt a Senior Pet Month.  At For Love of a Dog we celebrate senior pets every day of the year.  With Tucker soon to be 14 and Lucy right behind him, our hearts spill over with love and joy thanks to our own senior dogs.  We also have two senior equine:  Cakes is 28 and Ditty is 27.  To say we are blessed is an understatement.

If you're considering adding a dog to your household, we encourage you to consider a senior.  Here, from The Senior Dogs Project, are their top ten reasons:

1. Older dogs are housetrained. You won't have to go through the difficult stage(s) of teaching a puppy house manners and mopping/cleaning up after accidents.

2. Older dogs are not teething puppies, and won't chew your shoes and furniture while growing up.

3. Older dogs can focus well because they've mellowed. Therefore, they learn quickly.

4. Older dogs have learned what "no" means. If they hadn't learned it, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs.

5. Older dogs settle in easily, because they've learned what it takes to get along with others and become part of a pack.

6. Older dogs are good at giving love, once they get into their new, loving home. They are grateful for the second chance they've been given.

7. What You See Is What You Get: Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality. Puppies can grow up to be quite different from what they seemed at first.

8. Older dogs are instant companions and ready for hiking, car trips, and other things you like to do.

9. Older dogs leave you time for yourself, because they don't make the kinds of demands on your time and attention that puppies and young dogs do.

10. Older dogs let you get a good night's sleep because they're accustomed to human schedules and don't generally need nighttime feedings, comforting, or bathroom breaks.

The Senior Dogs Project promotes the adoption of older dogs; provides current information on the special care that older dogs need so that they and their human companions may fully enjoy their golden years; and documents the strong, loving bonds that people have with their older dogs.   The resources on their web site are too numerous to list here.  Visit The Senior Dogs Project on the web to learn more about adopting a senior dog.  You'll be glad you did.

Celebrate Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

The Humane Society of the United States   November 7 - 13 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

There are approximately 4,000 animal shelters across the U.S., available to serve the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who seek refuge each year. While 63 percent of American households include pets, only 10 percent of owned dogs and 18 percent of owned cats are adopted from animal shelters

How do you plan to honor your local animal shelter?  Here are just a few ideas:
  • Visit your local animal shelter and find out how you can help.
  • Adopt or foster an animal.
  • Say thank you with a card, note or other gift to your local shelter.
  • Support spay and neuter.
  • Donate a dog bed or other supplies your shelter needs.
  • ID your pet so they won't find themselves a shelter resident.
In 1996, The HSUS launched National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (based on an idea from the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln, Nebraska). This campaign was designed to acknowledge and promote the invaluable role shelters play in their communities and to increase public awareness of animal welfare issues and shelter services. During National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, the first full week of every November, The HSUS promotes and celebrates animal shelters across the country through media and public outreach.

Dog Song: Dog Breed Theme Songs

Okay.  Full disclosure on the part of For Love of a Dog Jewelry.  Technically, this dog video is not of a song about dogs,  It is a fun, creative video suggesting theme songs for some breeds of dogs:  Whippets and Greyhounds, Papillon, Labrador Retriever, Maremma shepherds, German Shepherds, Chihuahua, Husky.  It's silly, but silly in a good way.  Grab a dog.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and prepare to chuckle at the song suggestions and smile at the great dog photography.
