Solid Cherry Deacon Bench Fundraiser for Greyhounds and Humane Society

Wow.  You definitely need to click the link to view this gorgeous deacon bench.  It's a $1,700 value, custom made and all proceeds benefit the Greyhound Pets of America - Springfield and the Southwest Missouri Humane Society.

This deacon bench is solid hardwood - entirely made of knotty cherry and the seat is clear maple.  Dimensions:  60 inches wide by 42.5 inches high at the seat back;  22.75 inches from front to back and the storage area inside depth is 6 inches.  the finish is a custom stain and glaze.  Handmade and donated by tghe renowned Alpine wood Products of Marionville, MO.

Donation tickets are $5 or three tickets for $10.  To purchase follow the directions HERE.  The winner will be announced at the Greyhound Wine Tasting and Yappy Hour fundraiser on Feb 13.  You do NOT have to be present to win.  The bench will be delivered in Springfield.  Pick up can be arranged if you live outside of Springfield, MO.

The primary purpose of Greyhound Pets of Merica is to find responsible lovinghomes for greyhounds which fail to quality or no longer qualify for the racetrack.  GPA acquaints the public with the desirability of greyhounds as pets and informs them of the availability of these dogs for adoption.  The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri was organized in 1956.  They strive to be the SW MO region's leading shelter to guarantee the welfare of animals.  Their focus is to control pet overpopulation and reduce the number of homeless pets in their community, in addition to placing shelter animals in suitable home.

Mike is 9 years old and a super friendly guy.  He gets along great with kids and with other dogs.  However, he can climb a chainlink fence, so he needs to go to a home where he will be indoors or have a very secure yard.

Add Aventure to Your Life: Adopt a Black Dog

My fix for heartbreak was a black puppy.  I'd lost my heart dog, Benji, to liver failure and the grief was palpable.  Our young dog, Sherman, was a huge comfort, but I wanted a second dog.  Two dogs just seemed right.  Sort of double the pleasure, if you know what I mean.

Though I checked the message board at our vet's office, I was more inclined to adopt from an animal shelter and save a life.  We headed to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri in Springfield. 

There we found the leftover from a litter of lab mix puppies.  He'd been the only black puppy and it was love at first site.  12 weeks old and most of that time spent in a cage, I was afraid house breaking and socialization might be a challenge.  Not so.  One accident in the house.  Spanky was smart as they come. 

We couldn't leave a ladder out for more than a moment;  Spanky would climb it.  We learned that the hard way when were having new shingles put on our roof.  Curious about everything and fearless, he was an adventure packed into a silky, lean, black body with a curly tail.

Is Your Dog King or Queen of Hearts?

Does your dog have what it takes to be King or Queen of Hearts?  Join the Southwest Missouri Humane Society in their contest to crown canine royalty.  The Southwest Missouri Humane Society will celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of its new building on Oct. 2 and they invite dog owners to to help it raise money.

You can submit a picture of your dog for the "Hound Dog Homecoming" contest. Registration has already begun and goes through Sept. 27. The registration fee is $10.


"Pet owners who raise the most money will win the contest," said Lesly Thurman of the Humane Society. The King and Queen candidates who raise the most money on behalf of the homeless pets at the Humane Society will be crowned Hound Dog Homecoming King and Queen and will represent the Humane Society for the next year.  Visit the Southwest Missouri Humane Society web site to register for Hound Dog Homecoming.
