Disappearing Dog Tags | Monday Mischief

That's a lot of dog ID tags, right?

No, we've not added more than a dozen dogs to our pack.   

I've just given up on our Rubit dog tag clips.

Way back in the summer of 2011, I was lucky enough to win a contest at the Chronicles of Cardigan.  

The prize was a Rubit Dog Tag Clip. Very cool little gizmo that looked very handy.  No more broken fingernails and no more pliers just to change dog collars.

The dogs could make the appropriate fashion statement without me muttering over a pair of needlenose pliers.  I loved it!

In fact, I loved them so much that I immediately ordered more.  One for each of my dogs, plus some as gifts for Christmas that year.

Like many love affairs, mine with the Rubit is over.

Rosie's was the first to go.  Where did it go?  I have no idea.  Along with it went her ID tag, her rabies tag, and her microchip tag.    

I replaced all three on a new Rubit.  Within 2 weeks they were all gone again.  Though I realize the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results...  I replaced the whole set again.

Gone.    Rudy's were the next to go.   Jeffie's disappeared last week.

Actually, the Rubit magically appeared on the deck a few days later.  No tags.

At this point I think when our vet's office staff see one of us, they know what we need is a replacement rabies tag.  It's embarrassing.

So, I ordered some cheap  inexpensive ID tags.  Lots of them.   Already added them to the dogs' everyday collars and will be pawning the job onto the Dog Daddy of putting them on the dogs' other collars soon.

How did they come off the collars?  What happened to the tags?   Must be some Rubit elves out there somewhere and they've been up to a whole lot of mischief!

Adopt Bobbie an Australian Cattle Dog Pitbull Mix at Wayside Waifs

UPDATE April 2 - Wayside Waifs let me know that Bobbie was ADOPTED yesterday afternoon!

This beautiful girl is Bobbie.  She's a 4 year old Australian Cattle Dog / Pit Bull mix who is currently calling Wayside Waifs in Kansas City home.  Below is her message to you, plus a wonderful adoption video! You'll see Bobbie during her very first agility lesson, plus you'll see her infectious smile and wiggle butt in action.

Hi there! I'm Bobbie and I'm a total sweetheart of a dog! I'm friendly and affectionate. And I'm strong and athletic, too. I just want to be part of a family again. I want to feel loved and cared for again. I'm confused about being here and I long for a forever home.

I'm a 4 year old, 44 pounds of solid muscle, already housetrained, Pit Bull Terrier/Hound mix. I came to Wayside via the Riverside, MO animal control people, when my owners could no longer care for me and they abandoned me. They loved me very much though! Before they left me, they wrote down some information about me, since I wasn't able to speak for myself. They just didn't know where to turn, I guess, and if I saw them today, I'd give them a big tail wag and a kiss. Us dogs don't hold grudges. Anyway though, today is the day that I move on with my life! I have no choice but to pick myself up and carry on. I hope my next family is able to love and care for me for the rest of my life.

First order of business when I got here was to get myself in tip-top shape. I had my teeth cleaned, was treated for fleas, recuperated from a cold, and had a benign mass removed from my side. The mass was tested and it's nothing to worry about. Whew! I feel much better now. I'm a pretty gal...unique and solid and strong. I do pull some on my leash, but you can get me a harness to wear when we walk, if you'd like. That will make it a much more enjoyable walk for both of us! I'd love to exercise with you, so I hope you like that too. I'll be a great walking or running partner and the activity will help me stay happy, healthy, and calm.

To be perfectly honest, I'm stressed out by life here at the shelter, and it's sort of hard for me to chill out and relax. When I do though, I'm quite the affectionate snuggler! I love to be by your side. I try to talk to you...not with barks, but with little grunts. It's very cute and gets people wondering what I'm trying to say. I will sit for my treats and always take them very gently from your hand. I'm a sweet dog with a delightful personality!

Staff thinks I'll do best in a home with kids over the age of 12. I take my food sort of seriously, which isn't a big deal for adults, but the young kids don't always know how to give me my space. Please give me a safe place to eat in peace, and I will be just fine. And I need a home without any other dogs. I'm rude and don't know proper doggie etiquette. Please bring the whole family out to meet me, just so we know we all get along great together.

Life can bring you changes you're not ready for, that's for sure! I didn't know I was about to become homeless until it happened. Now here I am, looking for a second chance with a loving new family. I'll try my very best to be a fabulous companion for you! I'll love you with every bone in my body, every single day, for the rest of my life. How's that?

You Calling My 104 Pound Labrador Retriever Fat? | FitDog Friday

Rudy is an active dog.  He's a big dog.  He's not a fat dog.

Rudy is huge for a Labrador Retriever.  We sometimes joke that he's part pony. Rudy was the first born of a litter of seven puppies.  When we met him, he was nicknamed Fatso.  Not because he really was fat, but because he was so big.

These days when some folks hear what he weighs, they immediately jump to the conclusion that he's fat and overweight.  Labs are assumed to be fat.

A few days ago, while looking for something on the Blog Paws website, I noticed their links to Healthy Pet Tools including a Healthy Weight Calculator. 

After filling in the information, I received the following result:

"UH OH!  Unfortunately it appears as if RUDY may need to lose some weight.  Dogs that are overweight are prone to a wide variety of issues, including arthritis and diabetes.  Make an appointment with your veterinarian to check RUDYs body condition and develop a plan to get back on the right track."

Rudy is not fat.

When Rudy was 1 year old, I used a photo of him to illustrate how to measure for the properly sized elevated dog feeder.  At only 1 year old, Rudy was already 26" at the withers.

According to the American Kennel Club breed standard for Labrador Retriever dogs:

The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog that possesses a sound, athletic, well-balanced conformation...

Size - The height at the withers for a dog is 22 1/2 to 24 1/2 inches; for a bitch is 21 1/2 to 23 1/2 inches.  ...  Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition:  dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds.   [emphasis is mine]

When I measured Rudy the other day for this blog post, Rudy measured 27 7/8 inches at the withers.  Rudy weighs 104 pounds.

To give you some perspective:

• AKC standards for Great Danes are a minimum height of 30 inches for males and 28 inches for females.
• Miniature horse standard height is 34 to 38 inches.  The world's smallest miniature pony is reported to measure 24.8 inches at the withers. 

That old saying about just being big boned?  True in Rudy's case.

Not only is common sense required when determining if your mixed breed dog is overweight, it is essential for purebreds, too.  Not only should you not rely on the web to diagnose all ailments, you should not rely on only that for healthy weight information.

As Kate O'Brien of SlimDoggy notes in a How to tell if your Labrador is overweight article for The Labrador Site, you first should have an honest look at your dog, then check to see if you can feel their ribs, and consult your vet if you're still not sure.

Just because my dog is a Labrador Retriever, 3 years old, and weighs 104 pounds, does not mean he is obese or out of shape.  Rudy is a big lug.  He's active and fit.  And we plan to keep him that way with a healthy organic diet, exercise, and lots of love.

Sunshine Awards | Monday Mischief

I'm walking on sunshine... and don't it feel good!

Earlier this month I received a beautiful Sunshine Award from MK Clinton at Barking from the Bayou.  Then last week I received one from JoAnn at Sand Spring Chesapeakes. 

So where's the mischief?
Rosie is disappointed because these awards didn't come with dog treats!

No, the real mischief is that I'm not going to follow the rules for the awards.

Each came with a different set of rules and I'm just going to follow the ones I want to!

Adopt Elvis a Bluetick Coonhound Dog in Missouri

Elvis is a tricolor Bluetick Coonhound.  He's about 7 months old and eager to find his forever home. 

Elvis is a big guy and will be a big dog when he's full grown.  He'd really like an active home with people who will take him on some good sniffing adventures.

Animal Shelter staff and volunteers report that Elvis is doing well at his house training and learning to walk on a leash.  He's still a puppy with lots of that good puppy energy.

Pick Me Dog Rescue Song by the Stray Dogs | Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday!  Time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  I cannot lie. Pick Me is one of my all time favorite original dog songs and this video is barking good.

In 2013 this particular music video was voted Best Video Finalist in the national Petties Awards hosted by Dog Time Media.  The song Pick Me was composed and is performed here by the Stray Dogs a band that blends bluegrass, blues, country and rock with three part harmonies.

The video was produced by Kim Clune at Dog House Adoptions.and combines the song with clips from a year's worth of that organization's dog rescue and adoption footage.  Kim is the current President of Dog House Adoptions.  She celebrates human/animal connections through writing, photography and film at This One Wild Life.

Dog House Adoptions is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that cares for dogs who need help now, educated the public to protect dogs of the future, allows dogs to give back as they do best - with their whole hearts - accomplished with a sense of humor.

Pick Me is a toe tapping joyful ballad.  The video is full of beautiful dogs and puppies.

Australian Shepherd Missouri Dog Breeder Closes Up Shop

An Australian Shepherd commercial dog breeding facility in Missouri is no longer in business. 

Deciding to close, the owners of this dog breeder in rural Taney County, Missouri, voluntarily surrendered their dogs to the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO).

Yesterday the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force, working with the Missouri Department of Agriculture, rescued 41 juvenile and adult dogs.  The canines were taken to HSMO headquarters in St Louis where they are being examined, treated, spayed/neutered by veterinarians on staff there.

HSMO is encouraging Australian Shepherd dog rescue groups to assist in placing any of these dogs and are asked to call 314-802-5712.

In addition, these dogs will be made available for adoption by the public, though Debbie Hill, HSMO Vice President of Operations notes:

"Potential adopters also need to be aware that these dogs have never lived as house pets and many of them will need special care, socialization and training."

Anyone interested in adopting one of these Australian Shepherd dogs should keep any eye on the HSMO website to learn when they'll be ready for move on to a forever home.

Mother Nature and Tuesdays Tails | Monday Mischief

Jeffie keeps a grim eye on the freezing rain and ice.

When I began this blog post temperatures were in the 60's and I'd just come in from playing with the dogs.   As I finish this post, it is 32 degrees and Mother Nature has been flinging freezing rain down from the heavens for several hours.

I call that mischief.   If I lose electrical power, it's major mischief.

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie agree.  They're very depressed with this weather.  The past couple of days they'd been tricked to believe it was spring.  When they went outside a few minutes ago they found it hard to get traction with all the ice and they immediately turned around and came back in.

After toweling off the dogs, I'm back to my "original mischief."   

And this mischief is mine.  All mine. 

Where is this place?  I need a consultation!

Actually, Lisa at DogsnPawz and the founder of Tuesday's Tails blog hop makes it easy.  Since I've been featuring adoptable dogs here on my blog since 2008, there really was no reason to say no.

Tuesday's Tails is the blog hop that promotes adoption of pets from animal shelters and rescues.  A fresh hop linky is available every Tuesday.  However, participants can post any day of the week.   I almost always post my adoptable dogs on Sunday, then when Tuesday rolls around, I link up to the hop.

If you already promote pet adoption on your blog, please link up to the hop.  Though targeted at adoptable pets, we also welcome any blog posts regarding pet adoption, rescue organizations, and adoption events.
