 About Shaggy Chic

Shaggy Chic is an online apparel boutique, targeting animal lovers with product that has a touch of modern sass and spunk.

Shaggy Chic wants to make a difference. That's why a portion of all sales go back to animal rescue groups. They want to make history by helping to put an end to animal cruelty, hunger and abandonment. It takes money and it takes teamwork.

This year, Shaggy Chic is partnering with Don’t Forget to Feed Me, whose mission is to supply pet food to local food pantries in support of pet owners. By providing pet food for those in need during challenging financial times, they offer an option to surrendering – or worse, abandoning – a family pet. Don’t Forget to Feed Me helps to ensure that no pet owner ever has to make the decision between stay…or go.

Giveaway Rules:
1. There will be one winner (chosen at random by Rafflecopter) and they will receive a 6 month subscription to the Shaggy Chic Apparel T-Shirt of the Month Club.

2. This giveaway is open US residents only.

4. The winner will be announced here on this blog on December 3, plus the winner will receive an email from me that morning.   If I do not receive a response to that email within 48 hours, an alternate winner will be chosen.

A Talking Dogs Ghost Story | Monday Mischief

When another pet blogger put out a call for spooky pet ghost stories, it reminded me of Tucker's story.  Though not really scary, it certainly adds some Halloween flavor!

You may remember Tucker as the original Talking Dog.  Though he lived here in Missouri, he spent most of his life with us in southside Virginia.

We spent a few years restoring a 256 year old three story plantation manor house there, then enjoyed it for quite awhile.  Including visits from former residents.  Very old former residents.

We had been there about a year when we realized we weren't always alone.  When "they" were visiting, we'd be in the kitchen (first floor).   Usually it began with the faint whiff of pipe tobacco odor.  Then we could very faintly hear music (flute or recorder) and it was Colonial era music.  Sometimes we could hear voices, clinking of glassware, all very soft in tone.  All of this was coming from the original dining room (right above where we were.)

When these incidents began, Tucker would become quite excited and race up the stairs.  He might pause on the second floor for a bit, but would then madly skitter up the next flight of stairs to the third floor.   Always to the large room that was the children's bedroom in Colonial times.

We could then hear him racing around and playing.  The times we followed him, we'd find him happy as can be.

There was never, ever an evil feeling or vibe about any of this.  It never felt threatening in any way.  I always liked to think the former residents of our home liked what we were doing to their house.   They obviously liked Tucker and the feeling was mutual.

Birthday Party for Rudy | Monday Mischief

As usual most of the mischief lately is mine... all mine.  Rudy had such a great birthday that I'm not going to share it all in just one blog post!

Yes, there were special treats just for the birthday party!

I'll be sharing the recipe for Rudy's birthday peanut butter and pumpkin pupcakes tomorrow in the Tasty Tuesday blog hop.

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie rarely get any ice cream.  Tiny ice cream cones are a very rare treat... perfect for Rudy's birthday party.

There were gifts, toys and even games!

Rosie and Rudy especially loved playing with Rudy's new Flying Squirrel toy!

I'll be sharing more about Rudy's party and barking good gifts later this week.  In the meantime, be sure to enter Rudy's Birthday Giveaway!

Masked Bandits | Monday Mischief

A total of 4 masked bandits
showed up on one of our porches the other night.
 Yup, coons!
A mama raccoon with 3 of her baby kits.
Skeeter's supper leftovers made a snack for them.
 Mama got first dibs.
Each little coon kit took a turn.

Of course my camera battery was low on juice, dog-gone it!  Plus, these coon critters were moving fast.  The cubs were running around like crazy and exploring everything on the porch.  So, I apologize for the very poor quality of these photos.

For those not in the know, Skeeter is our cat.  She's a former feral cat who decided to semi adopt us about 9 years ago.  I say semi because she's still fairly feral.  Skeeter lives outdoors because she is terrified of coming in the house.  She's fed her meals atop one of two "feeding stations" that fit on porch bannisters.  For those of you shocked that she lives outside, please know that she has full access to a barn and our greenhouse.  AND she has two fully insulated custom built "cat houses" - one on our back porch and one on our covered deck.

I also need to say that I know full well that I should never feed critters out of doors like this because it does attract wildlife.  However, we live in the country and I've been feeding feral cats for many years.  Because the feeding stations are so close to the house, we've not had wildlife bother them much previously.

Where were the dogs during this nighttime raid?  At my feet wondering what the heck I was so excited about.  Because there are no windows that look out on the scene and the door is half glass, they didn't see a thing!

No Barking Allowed | Monday Mischief

Jeffie wonders why he's not supposed to bark at the deer.

We've been having a bit of mischief almost every night this summer.  You may remember me telling you about the deers that have stashed their babies just on the other side of the creek from our backyard.  (Babysitting Bambo part 1 and part 2)  Over the years they've learned that we will not harm them, though they're still a bit wary of the dogs.

Just about every night they come through browsing along the creek and playing in the pond.  However, one evening I wasn't watching closely enough.  I let the dogs out only to realize the whole herd, along with several fawns, were taking a break in the pond.

Here are 3 of the 13 member deer herd that visit us regularly.

The dogs thought "at last" and raced out barking.  The deer scattered.

A couple of days later we realized the deer had sent in a "first alert" volunteer.
The "guard deer" at alert just 20 foot from the house.

This doe remained in the yard at alert, obviously watching for dogs or any danger.  The rest of the herd was frolicking in the pond.  She remained until the last moment possible.  As the herd bounded up the hill, she leaped over the fence and joined them.
Rudy and Jeffie watch the deer herd move off for the night.

One look and you know Rudy is a retriever.  A Labrador Retriever.  He's very good at retrieving Jolly balls, flippy fliers, and tennis balls.

However, it takes some special retrieving skills for his real expertise.

Left Behind | Monday Mischief

Jeffie is thoroughly enjoying his walk with the Dog Daddy.

It never is any fun to be the one left behind.  Just ask Rudy and Rosie as they watch Jeffie during his stroll with the Dog Daddy.

Check out the ears - Rudy and Rosie wish it was their turn!

It feels like mischief every day to somebody.  Everyone has to wait their turn in the rotation!  A part of the Dog Daddy's rehab, these early morning dog strolls get a bit longer each day.
