Paws Up for Bugsy's Box Dog Treats and Toys | Product Review

Rosie and Rudy get ready to review Bugsy's Box dog treats and toys.
Bugsy's Box is a treat for those who enjoy pampering their dogs and consider them family.  From delicious treats to fun toys and other essentials - many of which are hard to find locally - you can count on high-quality, gourmet, happy surprises for your favorite pup.

According to their website Bugsy's Box is a monthly box of surprises for pets.  Each Bugsy's Box includes 5 to 7 items which are "a variety of high quality, hand picked, well reviewed dog treats, toys, care items, healthy supplements, accessories and more surprises such as coupons which are often included as a bonus."  All treats are made in the USA and shipping is included in the subscription price.

We received the June Bugsy's Box which included the following items:

Fetch and Glow Boomerang from American Dogs Toys - a fetch toy that glows in the dark and floats.  High quality, durable and non-toxic.  Can be used indoors or outdoors, including the pool.  Retail price: $9.99
Paws up!  Rosie especially loves playing fetch with this toy.  Definitely a winner.
Rosie loves the Fetch & Glow Boomerang in our Bugsy's Box.

Collapsible Travel Bowl is perfect for any dog on the go.  Features cute paw prints on the outside and a durable inner lining.  Can be used for water or food when you're out and about with your dog. No retail price available, however a similar item on Amazon retails for $4.99.
Paws up!  Though I doubt we'll use this often, it's great to take along in the car.  Since it folds so small, it easily fits in the glove box.

Jeffie was very enthused about the Brewscuits dog treats in our Bugsy's Box.
Brewscuits Treats are hand crafted dog biscuits that incorporate the whole grain used to brew beer to create a one of a kind treat.  Brewscuits do not contain any chemical preservatives or grains that are difficult to digest (corn, gluten, soy) making them the perfect biscuit.  Plus, they're alcohol free.  We received Brewscuits Training Bits in peanut butter flavor.  A 4 oz bag retails for $6.50.
All paws up!  These were the real winner!  Jeffie, Rudy, and Rosie LOVE them.  Definitely on my "to order" list.

Rudy thought the Brewscuits were the very best thing in our Bugsy's Box.

Piggy Twizzies - all natural, grain free, chews high in protein and easily digested.  Grain free, gluten free, soy free and dairy free.  No artificial ingredients, colors or flavors.  And they naturally preserved.  A package of 30 retails for $69.03 at Amazon.
3 dogs - 1 Twizzie.  You do the math.  So far no dog has gotten lucky and tried this treat.

Wagathas Treats are healthy dog biscuits.  We received their new Cranberry Cheddar with Mint biscuits.  Cranberries are known to help with urinary tract health and spearmint combats doggie breath.  These biscuits feature human grade cerified organic ingredients including white cheddar cheese, spearmint and rosemary oil.  A 16 oz box retails for $10.95 (not including shipping)
Paws up!  All three dogs definitely liked these organic dog treats and I've bookmarked their website.

Bugsy's Box plans include monthly at $29/mo, 3 month at $69 ($23/mo) and 6 month at $114 ($19/mo) plans.  Bugsy Boxes are shipped on the 15th of each month.  Plans automatically renew unless you decide to cancel prior to renewal.

As you can see, our June Bugsy's Box contained products that retailed for about $34.73 - not including shipping.  Not at all a  bad deal for $29.  AND if I'd been a 3 month subscriber my price would have been $19 which would have made it a fantastic bargain!

We reviewed the June Bugsy's Box.

This Bugsy's Box afforded us an opportunity to try products that are totally new to us.  That's a very good thing!

You do have the opportunity to choose your dog's size, but truly customized boxes are not available.  For example, if your dog has food sensitivities, it's a roll of the dice.  Though Bugsy's Box notes that there are usually 2-4 different treats in each box so, hopefully, your dog won't be allergic to all the products in any given box.

Rosie is all smiles about the Wagatha's dog treats in our Bugsy's Box.
The dogs certainly gave paws up to the treats!  If you like surprises and don't mind a product or two that you might not care for, the Bugsy's Box is barking good.  The one "catch" is that you definitely need to manage your subscription.  If you decide not to continue with their program, you must cancel.  Otherwise your subscription will continue and you will be billed.

All in all, FUN!  I'd consider ordering for my dogs, as well as ordering gift subscriptions for friends.  Fetch Bugsy's Box now!

* Disclosure:  We received one Bugsy's Box in exchange for our honest review of the product and service.  We received no other compensation - financial or otherwise.

Adopt Oscar a Beagle Dog in Missouri

This adorable fellow is Oscar.  He's a tricolor Beagle and about 1 1/2 years old.  As you can see from his adoption video, Oscar knows how to sit for treats and he loves toys.

According to the American Kennel Club:
Beagles are happy-go-lucky and friendly, making them a wonderful family pet.  They are also favored for their compact size and short easy to care for coat.  Since they lived in packs for hundreds of years, they naturally enjoy the company of other dogs and humans.  Curous and comedic, they often follow their noses - which can lead to some mischief if they are not provided with daily activity.

Oscar loves people and is waiting for an active forever home.  He's adoptable from the Humane Society of Missouri in St Louis.  Find out more about Oscar by calling 314-951-1562.  Oscar's animal ID number is A575648

Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances.  They provide a safe and caring haven to animals - large and small - that have been abused, neglected or abandoned.  Their mission is to end the cycle of abuse and overpopulation, assist in creating lasting relations hips between people and animals, offer world-class veterinary care, plus offer pet obedience and behavior programs.  HSMO operates three animal shelters in the St Louis, Missouri, area, plus Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri, for abused and neglected horses, cows, goats, chickens and other farm animals.

New Dog Book Author Raises Money for Stray Rescue St Louis

Stray Rescue Founder, Randy Grimm, checks out the new dog book Travels with Casey by Benoit Danizet Lewis  ©StrayRescue

New York Times Magazine writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis worried that his dog, Casey, didn't like him very much.  So Benoit rented an RV, lured Casey inside with treats, and embarked on a 13,000 mile road trip designed to help them bond.

Along the way they spent time with wolf-dogs in Appalachia, dedicated stray dog rescuer Randy Grim, got pulled over by a K9 cop in Missouri,  visited Cesar Millan and so much more.  The result is Travels with Casey: My Journey Through Our Dog-Crazy Country.
Benoit spent a full week with Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St Louis, his staff and volunteers, rescuing stray and feral dogs in East St Louis, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in our country.  Randy has devoted his life to the dogs society has forgotten.

Benoit has set up a Dream at DreamFund to benefit Stray Rescue of St Louis.  All monies raised will go directly to rescuing, feeding, and rehabilitating dogs helped by Stray Rescue.  Benoit hopes to raise $5,000 by August 20, 2014.

Check out this video of Benoit's time with Randy Grim:

Adopt Bella a Labrador Retriever Vizsla Mix Dog In Kansas City

This pretty girl is Bella.  She's a Labrador Retriever and Vizsla mixed breed dog who is 4 years and 9 months old.  Her owner had to move out of town and could not take Bella along, so she's waiting at Wayside Waifs in Kansas City for a new loving home.

Here's what Bella has to say about herself:
I'm Bella and I'm looking for a new home. I'm a beautiful girl....fun, playful, and affectionate, too. I just need a home and family, that's all, and then my life will be perfect.

I am a 4 1/2 year old, 61 pound, already housetrained and crate trained, Labrador Retriever/Vizsla mix. I came to Wayside when my owner was moving out of town and couldn't take me with her. We had been together for the past several months and I was with a friend of hers before that. My life has been sort of crazy lately, so I'd love a little stability and peace and quiet. Don't get me wrong though, I love to stay active and busy, but I'd just like a consistent routine of a daily walk or run or hike with my loved one. That's my idea of a great way to stay active. That's not asking too much, is it?

I love to spend time with my people! Wherever you are, I'd love to be with you. I'm a perfect combination of active yet chilled out and relaxed. I'm quiet and well behaved in my kennel at Wayside. And when you get me out, I love to play fetch and play with toys and spend time showing you my tricks. I already know 'sit', 'down', 'come', and 'shake', and I'd love to learn more! My previous owner described me as a playful and affectionate, sometimes goofy, lap dog who soaks up attention from my people. I'm looking for an owner who likes to have their dog by their side whenever possible. I even like to eat when you're near me! I was completely housetrained in my previous home and never bothered a thing in the house when I was left by myself. I slept through the night on my dog bed or with my owner and never made a peep. I do know how to jump a fence though, and I might do that or dig if I get bored alone in my yard. Please supervise me when I'm outside and don't leave me alone in the yard all day.

Please be patient and gentle and calm with me as I get acclimated to my new home. I've been through lots of change in my life and that can be tough for a dog who craves consistency and routine. I'll do my best to make you happy, once I figure out exactly what that means. So please offer me praise and treats when I'm a good girl. That will help me be the confident, well behaved dog I know I can be.

I'd love to be the only animal in my new home. I've lived with other dogs before, but that didn't always go so well. They didn't always want to listen to me and I didn't like to back down. So I'll need a home without other dogs or cats or other small, furry animals, please. I hope you don't mind me being your whole focus of attention! I promise to shower you with so much love that you'll be fine with just me! And please let me meet the whole family before we go home together, so that we can be sure we all get along great. I was recently adopted for awhile, but I didn't get along with the 4 year old in my home, so Wayside staff thinks I'll be happiest in a home without kids under the age of 10, just to be safe.

I just want to fit in. I want to belong. I want you to love me and feel like you need me in your life. I want your life to be better because I'm in it. I'll work every single day for the rest of my life to make all of that happen. I'm waiting for you now and I hope you come for me soon!
Love, Bella

Take a look at Bella's adoption video, then contact Wayside Waifs at 816-761-8151.  Bella's animal ID number is 22475764.   Bella's adoption fee is only $25.

Rudy Hates Fireworks | Wordless Wednesday

Rudy cringes at the thought of more fireworks!

We live in a very rural neighborhood that enjoys extending the July 4th holiday as long as possible.  Not just one neighbor, but 7 enjoyed fireworks beginning July 2 and continued until last night.  It takes some coaxing to get Rudy outside even during the day since he's fearful the fireworks will begin again.  No, the Thundershirt does not work.  Shades drawn, music loud, and lots of cuddling help.  We're surrounded by people who love big bangs.  Sorry, Rudy.

Minties Dental Treats and Betsy Farms Jerky Dog Treats | Product Review

Though there's no really good substitute for brushing your dog's teeth and gums, dental treats do have a place in good dental care for canines.

We've try a few of these products, but never Minties.

 Until now.

Minties Dental Treats from VetIQ help to control plaque and tartar accumulation and include five natural breath fresheners:  mint, parsley, dill, fennel and chlorophyll.
  • Mint promotes minty fresh breath.
  •  Parsley contains enzymes to break down odor-causing particles in your dog's stomach.
  • Dill helps inhibit bacterial growth and helps prevent early stages of gingivitis.
  • Fennel helps control bacteria and is a natural breath freshener.
  • Chlorophyll from alfalfa balances acid levels in your dog's stomach and helps deodorize your dog's body.

We received a 6 ounce package of Minties Dental Treats for large dogs 40 pounds plus which contained 4 large treats. They're also available as tiny dog, small dog, and medium size dog treats.  Minties are made in the US and are veterinarian recommended.

Ingredients
Rice flour, vegetable glycerin, water, natural chicken flavor, calcium carbonate, lecithin, garlic, tricalcium phosphate, brewers dried yeast, dried alfalfa (source of chlorophill), parsley, fennel, dill, peppermint, cholecalciferal (source of vitamin D3), mixed tocopherals (preservative.)

Guaranteed Analysis:
  • Crude protein minimub 6%
  • Crude fat minimum  1.5%
  • Crude fiber maximum  2.5%
  • Moisture maximum 15%
Calorie content per bone 85.6 Kcal

As I opened the package, I was greeted by the pleasant odor of Minties.  The mint is obvious, as well as the alfalfa, which happens to be one of my favorite smells.  All three dogs thought they smelled good, too, and were eager to give them a try.

Jeffie waits for a Minties Dental Treat for Dogs taste test.
Minties are generous in size, green in color, and definitely crunchy.  I waqs pleased to see that they're available locally at Walmart.  A 12 ounce package of 8 treats (for large dogs) is $12.88.

Rosie says: Go away Mama, I'm busy eating my Minties Dental Treats for Dogs

Final verdict - not only did the dogs love Minties, I like them, too.  I like the herbal ingredients, smell, and my dogs' enjoyment.  Though I did not have enough to judge whether they had any impact on my dogs' dental health, they certainly made their breath smell good!

Jeffie is howling for more Minties Dental Treats for Dogs!

Along with Minties, we were given some Betsy Farms turkey jerky dog treats to taste test. Jerky treats for dogs from Betsy Farms are available in three recipes:  chicken, turkey and duck.  Each is made with real American raised poultry and free of wheat, artificial colors and flavors.

We also received a 12 ounce bag of Betsy Farms Turkey Jerky Fillets dog treats to try.

Ingredients:
Turkey, barley, tapioca, pea protein, corn protein concentrate, turkey liver, begetable glycerin, dried whey, potassium sorbate (preservative), salt, lactic acid, hickory smoke flavor, mixed tocopherols (preservative), rosemary extract, colored with annatto extract.

Guaranteed Analysis:
  • Crude protein minimum 20%
  • Crude fat minimum  4%
  • Crude fat maximum  7%
  • Crude Fiber maximum 2%
  • Moisture maximum  25%
Calorie content - unknown.

With all the news about jerky dog treats, I was happy to learn more about Betsy Farms Jerky Recipes for Dogs.  Not only are their ingredients sources here in the US, these treats are made here, too.  In addition, Betsy Farms has a unique process that first cooks the poultry at a temperature high enough to eliminate potentially harmful bacteria.  Then, that poultry is pulverized, mixed with the other ingredients and cooked again.

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie love jerky and as soon as I opened the package of Betsy Farms Turkey Jerky, they had a hard time containing their enthusiasm!

Rudy is focused on the Betsy Farms Turkey Jerky dog treats.

Though I spotted Betsy Farms Jerky dog treats online at Amazon, EBay and other retail sources, according to the Betsy Farms website, Betsy Farms Jerky Recipes for Dogs are available at Walmart, Sam's Club, Albertsons-Southwest, Anda, and Menards.   Unfortunately, not only could I not find them at my local Walmart, I also did not find them available at Walmart.com.

Rosie waits paitently for her turn to try Betsy Farms Turkey Jerky Dog Treats.

Final verdict - the dogs loved these Betsy Farms turkey jerky treats.  Though I'd prefer our jerky treats contain fewer ingredients (after all, it is fairly simple to make homemade jerky dog treats), I do like that these are sourced and made here in the United States and these have never been subject to a recall or FDA notice.

Pretty sure Rudy is saying:  Yum Yum!
