Over 150 Dogs Cats Horses Goats Rescued from Squalor in Missouri

More than 150 dogs, cats, horses and goats were rescued from squalid conditions in Morgan County, Missouri by the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

Working with the Morgan County, MO, Sheriff's Office, the HSMO took these animals to safety after the owner of the property and a tenant voluntarily surrendered all of the animals to them.

Many of the cats were living in a filthy, trash-strewn trailer on the property and are suffering from upper respiratory disease, eye infections, severely matted coats and other maladies.

The dogs included mixed breeds, terriers, Akitas, Labrador Retrievers and Beagles which are thin and suffering from parasites.  Included in the group are 2 two week old puppies and 2 eight week old puppies.

The horses range in age from new foals and pregnant mares to adult horses and ponies.  They are also underweight and suffering from parasites.  One dead foal was found in a barrel on the property.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office stated they will pursue animal abuse charges in this case.

The dogs and cats have been taken to HSMO Headquarters in St Louis for evaluation and treatment.  The horses and goats have been taken to HSMO's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union for evaluation and treatment.

HSMO cautions that due to their poor condition, it may be several weeks before many of these animals will be available for adoption.

Paw Print Pet Lover Bracelet #Giveaway | Monday Mischief

I thought I'd create a little mischief this Monday by having a giveaway of my handmade For Love of a Dog Jewelry.

For Love of a Dog fans on Facebook agreed with me that it was time for a giveaway and they overwhelmingly voted for that item to be a bracelet.

So, to celebrate Walk Your Dog Month, I chose this Paw Print dog lover bracelet.  Though in my own mind, I'm connecting the paw prints to walking your dog, this bracelet is purrfect for all you cat ladies, too!

Black and white is such a classic combination and goes with everything.  For this bracelet I combined lots of handmade lampwork beads.  Adorable paw print beads are surrounded by white based beads with bumpy raised black dots.
.
Check out the barking good paw print on heart silver lobster claw clasp.  And there just had to be a sweet puffy red lampwork heart dangle, right?

There will be one (1) winner and this bracelet will be custom sized to fit.

EDIT:  Originally this giveaway was limited to those who have US shipping addresses due to USPS fee increases.  Those of you who live outside the US, if you are willing to pay the shipping charges ($10 for First Class International Mail), please DO enter.

If you'd like to win this bracelet made with my own hands, just follow the directions in the rafflecopter below.   And when you get finished with that... I suggest you walk your dog or you could always fetch more of my handmade paw themed jewelry!

Over 250 Rabbits Goats Cats Dogs Chickens Rescued in MO

In 2010, 158 rabbits, dogs, cats, goats and fowl were rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri in Franklin County, Missouri.

In a stipulated agreement with that County's prosecutor, the owner of the animals agreed that for a period of 2 years she would not acquire more animals than her 2 personal dogs, goats left on the property and 20 new rabbits.  That period ended February 2012.

This year, after being alerted by a concerned citizen about the possibility of a neglect situation, the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force contacted the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.  After investigating, the Sheriff's Office served a warrant to remove the animals on November 12, 2013.

Over 250 animals were rescued this time.  The animals include:  192 domestic rabbits, 25 goats, 10 cats, 21 chickens, 4 dogs, 1 duck.

According to the HSMO all of the animals were living in filthy conditions.
The rabbits were housed in raised wire-bottom cages with feces piled in the cages as well as more than a foot under the cages.
Many of the cages were encrusted with dirt and hair, plus have little to no shelter from the weather.
Water for many of the animals was frozen, dirty and contaminated with feces.
Most cages held multiple rabbits with as many as 10 rabbits crammed in each of multiple cages.

The goats appear to be suffering from an upper respiratory illness.  None of the animals appear to have received any veterinary care.

The rescued rabbits, dogs, and cats were taken to the HSMO shelter in St. Louis City for veterinary care.  The goats, chickens and duck were taken to the HSMO Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.  A disposition hearing will be held December 4.  If custody of the animals is awarded to the HSMO, as many as possible will be made available for adoption.

Rainbow Bridge Pet Memoral Jewelry at For Love of a Dog

Cat and Mouse Rainbow Bridge Bracelet at For Love of a Dog Jewelry

As a lifelong animal lover, I often say I have many friends waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.  Do I believe that there is, literally, a bridge made of rainbows and that all my pets are just sitting there waiting for me?   Well, no, not exactly.  I do, however, believe in an afterlife and I do believe in angels.  And if ever any being deserved to become angels, it would be my beloved pets.

It is in that spirit that I create my Rainbow Bridge jewelry and I wear my own to remember my friends.  Most of these jewelry pieces can be personalized, so if that interests you, be sure to ask about it.  Some pieces are suitable for any species of pet;  others are specific to dogs or cats.

Shown at top is a Cat and Mouse Rainbow Bridge Bracelet.  Chubby faceted crystal rondelles in rainbow colors are hand wire wrapped with gold jeweler's wire.  A winged heart charm dangles from the clasp.   I adore these cute 3D mouse and cat head toggle clasps.

Shown below is a Cat and Fish Rainbow Bridge Bracelet.  Check out the charming fish and cat head toggle clasp.

Feral Cat Song | Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday, so that usually means it's time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Not today, folks!

Instead we have a very special song in honor of National Feral Cat Dat (October 16):  Feral Cat Song.  Even if you're not a cat lover, your will love this!

Feral Cat Song was written by Karen Green and is the musical tale of a feral cat lover, set to the tune of Peggy Lee's famous Fever.   Karen is performing the song acapella here at a Best Friends No More Homeless Pet national conference in 2008.

Sorry, no cute kitty video or slide show, but I know you're going to love these lyrics.  Listen closely.  Despite a lengthy web search, I never found the lyrics so I could share them here.

Grab a cat to cuddle!  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Feral Cat Song by Karen Green.

Fetch some genuine dog song music videos at Talking Dogs.  You'll be surprised at how many we've collected over the past few years!  And be sure to scroll down below today's featured dog song to explore some barking good blogs in today's Pet Blogger Hop.

Our cat, Skeeter, was a feral cat.

Monday Mischief: Dog TV at For Love of a Dog

I thought I was so smart.

I thought I had a perfect doggie Monday Mischief blog post.

Our dogs do sometimes watch TV, especially Rosie, so I thought I'd catch some cute photos of them watching the new DOGTV channel.

According to their website, DOGTV is the first television network for dogs.

"DOGTV's 24/7 programing helps stimulate, entertain, relax and habituate dogs with shows that expose them to various movements, sounds, objects, experiences and behavior patterns, all from a dog's point of view."

The folks at DOGTV suggest that you sit down and watch with your dogs, so that's exactly what I did.

I found the programing relaxing and rather soothing.  The dog daddy loves it.

The dogs were not impressed.  Not a one showed an interest.  At all.  In fact, they left the room!

Another session - another try.  Ditto.  Zero interest.

The dog daddy thinks it's because we live in the country with lots of stimulation and their huge backyard is a dog park of their very own.  Perhaps it's because there are three of them and they amuse each other when we're not interacting with them.

Maybe they're like their humans and just not that much into TV.  I dunno.

However, yesterday when I gave DOGTV a third try, I suddenly realized that I did have a taker!

Skeeter was outside, sitting on the deck sideboard and watching intently.   She only turned away when the segment with monkeys came on.  I mean:  got up and turned her back on the monkeys.  When the next segment came on - birds - she turned around and became mesmerized once again.

Guess at our house "Television for dogs" is really entertaining for cats!

Thank you to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

Monday Mischief: Skeeter is Stalking Something

Our cat, Skeeter, is the one causing mischief.  Though I have no idea what she is watching (stalking), there's bound to be some trouble ahead for a rabbit, bird or whatever she has her eye on!

Skeeter is sitting on the cross member of a gate that leads into a pasture, just next to the creek and pond.

Eight foot in the air, she's being pretty bold.

We don't know how old she is, since Skeeter came to us as a stray, feral cat.  However, we know she was an adult when she arrived 9 years ago.  The past year she's slowed down considerably.  Other than a bit of vole hunting with Rudy and Rosie, we've not seen her stalk or catch anything for some time.

We haven't seen her climb the wisteria that covers our deck (where she used to lay to scout birds) this year.

The red circle in the photo above shows where Skeeter is laying on the arbor, concealed in the wisteria.  A prime place for bird watching.  Can you see her little nose sticking through?

So, although she's certainly up to mischief, we're glad to see it!

Thank you to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!
