As a lifelong animal lover, I often say I have many friends waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.  Do I believe that there is, literally, a bridge made of rainbows and that all my pets are just sitting there waiting for me?   Well, no, not exactly.  I do, however, believe in an afterlife and I do believe in angels.  And if ever any being deserved to become angels, it would be my beloved pets.

Baxter Black Just a Dog | National Pet Memorial Day

National Pet Memorial Day is September 8, 2013 and is dedicated to celebrating our beloved pets who have passed away.  

The International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Cremoratories created this special day to honor the lives and loss of our animal best friends.

Not a day goes by that I don't think about my own beloved best friends who have passed on.  They brought incredible joy and meaning to my life .

Dog Song Saturday: In the Arms of the Angels by Sarah McLachlan

It's Saturday so time for a dog song from Talking Dogs.  Today's song is a very special one to all of us at For Love of a Dog.  You see, as you read this, Tucker, the original Talking Dog, is in the arms of the angels.  I promise to write more about Tucker and celebrate his 14 years of life with us, but not right now.  Forgive me for this short post;  my grief is too fresh to bark a lot today.

Dog Song Saturday: I Miss You Tribute to Lost Pets

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at For Love of a Dog.  Have the tissues handy for this one.  You will not be able to listen to the lyrics without needing them.  Yes, not just one tissue.  You'll need several if you're like me.

This is a video tribute to dogs and other pets that have passed on.  The photos come from many people and they will touch your heart, too.  The song I Miss You is written and performed by Justine Bennett.  You can hear more of her work on her MySpace page.

As I watched and listened, I couldn't help but think of my own beloved pets who are now gone.  And, just like the song says, I miss them every day.

All Dogs Go to Heaven

My friends know I'm dog crazy (and some of them are, too) so I receive some wonderful emails. Sometimes they're just too good not to share... and this is one of those times.

Get some tissues handy. Here's the story:

This is one of the kindest thingsI've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it,but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US Postal Service.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could, so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'ToMeredith," in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven.

Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letterand thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find.. I am wherever there is love.

Thinking about the Rainbow Bridge

When I showed up on the front porch, I was a mess and Mama and Daddy took pity on me. They took me in and introduced me to my new brother, Spanky. Spanky hated me! It was hard to understand because he was used to having a brother, but he sure did. Lucky for me, Petey the cat, loved me and taught me to play. Within weeks we all understood why Spanky hated me... he had a rapidly growing form of cancer in his mouth. He was gone within a couple of months. That happened almost 10 years ago, and even though I know he's at the Rainbow Bridge, when I hear his name I run to the window to see if he's there. Old habit, I guess.

You know, Lucy is pretty much a bully and Jeffie mostly drives me nuts, but I do love them so. It's hard to imagine life without them. I remember how Mama cried when Spanky left. She said the thing that made her feel better was thinking about seeing him again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Now Mama has found what they call a Squidoo lens about Goldie, a Golden Retriever, who is at the Rainbow Bridge. She asked me to tell you to take a look. Like Spanky, Goldie had a fast growing form of cancer. I'm partial to Golden Retrievers and if you are too, you should check this out: a tribute to a golden retriever, Goldie.
