Jolly Ball Giveaway | Happy Birthday Rudy

 

If you follow Talking Dogs blog, you already know that Rudy loves his Jolly ball.  It is, by far, his favorite dog toy.  More than once, someone has seen a photo of our dogs with a Jolly ball and asked about them.

Actually, we have more than one Jolly ball at our house because all three of our dogs love them.  Yes, eventually the ropes give out in one way or another, but it is very easy to slide in a new piece of soft cotton rope (purchased at any hardware store) and tie two knots.

Though we simply call them Jolly balls, their real name is Romp-n-Roll and they're made by Jolly Pets.  With the rope through the middle, they're barking good for interactive games like tug of war, keep away and fetch.  

These low density balls are resistant to punctures (even our oldest has zero punctures in 7 years of rowdy retriever play.)  They're made of non-toxic material, too.  They come in 3 sizes:  4.5", 6" and 8"

Stray Rescue Big Winner in Grow St Louis Contest Fall 2011

In the fall of 2011, a groundswell of people who care about dogs began a grass roots effort to make sure that Stray Rescue of St Louis was the winner in the Monsanto Grow St Louis Contest.  

And they were successful.  

Listen to Randy Grimm, founder of Stray Rescue describe the beginning of this animal rescue group and what winning will do for the dogs of St Louis.

Stray Rescue of St Louis has been going into city neighborhood for years and rescuing the abused, tortured and neglected dogs and cats.  Operating solely on donations and compassion, Stray Rescue has approximately 1,500 volunteers who care for these animals and make sure they are adopted into loving homes.  Visit the Stray Rescue of St Louis website for more information on adoptable cats and dogs, video of animal rescues, information about abandoned animals in St Louis and much more.

During the summer of 2011, Monsanto pledged to help St Louis grow by awarding $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 awards to local projects quarterly.  Hundreds of people submitted non-profit organizations and projects and thousands voted for the winners.

Stray Rescue of St Louis was the Fall 2011 first place winner and received $15,000 which will be used to complete an animal shelter renovation and for the Stray Rescue Strack's Fund which covers medical expenses for the animals.

Talking Dogs Blog is a Winner in the Pets Blogroll Contest

We are thrilled!  Talking Dogs blog won a Pets Blogroll pet food bowl!

You may have noticed a little widget over on the left and wondered what it was all about.  Well, the good folks over at The Pets Blogroll randomly selected Talking Dogs blog, along with four other pet blogs, to receive custom Pets Blogroll pet bowls.   The contest was their way of celebrating achieving 250 members.

All four of the For Love of a Dog canines definitely approve of this terrific new bowl.  (Though only three would pose for photos.)  This is really a nice ceramic pet food bowl with the Pets Blogroll logo from Cafe Press.

Search for 2011 Bark in the Park Official Mascot is on NOW!

The Humane Society of Missouri is looking for a few good dogs to represent all St. Louis shelter pets at Bark in the Park on May 21, 2011.

The Bark in the Park Mascot has the very important job of leading the Walk for Animals and serving as doggy spokesperson for the event. All entrants should have canine kudos for good behavior and good manners with people and other dogs. They should enjoy walking on a leash and be comfortable and calm in new situations.



If you think your dog is PAWS down the best dog on the block, send them an email telling them why. The Humane Society of Missouri will spotlight dogs that have overcome PAWsonal obstacles or helped their families through “ruff” spots of their own.
 
Deadline for entries is at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2010.  Nominate your dog.

Hot Tails of Kansas City Virtual Pet Photo Contest

Hot Tails of Kansas City is the hottest online pet competition in the metro Kansas City area.  Vote for your favorite in a month-long contest. 

All proceeds benefit Wayside Waifs, Kansas City's largest no-kill animal shelter, which cares for more than 6,000 abandoned, abused and homeless animals every year.Each candidate is campaigning for votes. Each dollar raised equals one vote. At the conclusion of the contest, the candidate with the most votes will be crowned the winner.

The Hot Tails winner will be featured in the 2012 Wayside Waifs calendar, will receive year long recognition on the Wayside Waifs website and of course wins the highly coveted title of "Hottest Tail in Kansas City."Candidates encourage you to vote as often and as many times as you can. Adopt a Shelter Dog Month Video Contest

Did you adopt your dog from a shelter?  If so, you should think about entering the ASPCA Adopt a Shelter Dog video contest.  It's pretty simple.  Shoot your video, upload it to youtube, then fill out the entry form which includes an essay (up to 400 words).  The deadline for entries is October 31.

My mama subscribes to Bark magazine. We know when it arrives in the mailbox that she's a goner for awhile. First she has to look at the Smiling Dogs, then flip through to see the photography and selection of articles. What we liked in the issue that came this week are the contests!

Jeffie is barking about the Home Away from Home contest. You could win a refurbished lobby or adoption room for your favorite animal shelter. Wow. All you have to do is write a very short essay on why your shelter should win.

Lucy is whining about the Celebrate the Harvest contest. You could win a case of Mutt Lynch wine featuring your dog on the label. What do you have to do? Take an online tour of their dog loving winery. I have to admit, Lucy would look pretty terrific on the label of their finest vintage wine. Don't you think so?

I've been howling about Bark's first Writing Contest. They're looking for the best canine-centric short story they can find. First prize is $500 and publication in the magazine. When I first heard about this contest, I was so excited. Afterall, I'm a writer and I really do have a lot of stories to tell. Then I read their rules. Rule number one says the stories must be written from the human point of view. You cannot have a dog narrate the story. What are they thinking? I just can't help thinking of what that prize could buy me. Oh well... a dog can dream, can't he?
