Old Mother Hubbard Dog Treats from Chewy | Product Review

We love Chewy.com and so when they asked if we'd like to try Old Mother Hubbards' dog treats, we quickly agreed.  Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie are always up for a taste testing!

Old Mother Hubbard's classic recipe was originally developed over 80 years ago as a snack for fishermen while out at sea.  These days they bake a variety of dog treats from all-natural ingredients including: chicken, cheddar cheese, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes and oatmeal.

We received a 3.5 pound package of Old Mother Hubbard Classic Original Assortment Oven Baked Dog Biscuits to try.  These bone shaped biscuits included Original, Chicken, Cheddar, and Char Tar flavors.  These come in several sizes of treats, from mini to large and in several package size options.  We received a package for large dogs.

Ingredients:  whole wheat flour, oatmeal, wheat bran, chicken fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), chicken, tumeric, charcoal, cane molasses, paprika, paprika extracts, white cheddar cheese, eggs, apples, carrots, garlic, salt.

Nutritional information:
  • Crude Protein - not less than 12%
  • Crude Fat  -  not less than 7%
  • Crude Fiber  -  not more than 5.50%
  • Moisture  -  not more than 11%
Calorie content:
  • Mini  -  8kcal / piece
  • Small  -  33 kcal / piece
  • Large  -  138 kcal / piece
Note:  Old Mother Hubbard does offer wheat-free dog crunchy dog treats: Chick'N'Apples.

You'll notice that our taste testing took place outdoors.  That's because of the caution listed on this bag of dog treats about staining.  According to Old Mother Hubbard, all of their crunchy products that have tumeric in the ingredients carry a caution statement.  Tumeric is a natural spice which is bright yellow in color (they use it to color some of their products naturally.)  However, when combined with the saliva in the dog's mouth, it can sometimes create yellow staining.

These are very large dog biscuits and when we opened the bag we were greeted with the smell of cereal and grain.

Not only were our dogs thrilled at the extra large size of these treats, they loved the taste.

They each got to try two different flavors.  Very crunchy, there was a  lot of satisfied crunching going on.

Then, of course, they had to check for chunks or crumbs in the grass.

We like that these dog treats are made with human grade natural ingredients in the United States.  They looked good, smelled good, and our dogs loved them.  Our order from Chewy.com was filled and shipped to us super fast.  Jeffie loves the bonus he receives with Chewy.com orders:  another chance to protect us from the FedEx man.
.Rosie is keeping an eye on the bag, hoping some more biscuits will jump out and into her jaws!

We're pleased to give Old Mother Hubbard Classic dog treats and Chewy.com all paws up for any dogs who are not sensitive to wheat, paprika or tumeric.  Note: we did notice any problem with the tumeric leaving any stains when the dogs each had one of these dog biscuits inside the house.  Plus, we received these dog treats from Chewy.com, a company we love for their superior customer service, super fast home delivery, easy to navigate website, and wide selection of pet food and supplies.
* We received one bag of Old Mother Hubbard Classic dog biscuits from Chewy.com in exchange for our honest review of the product and service.  We received no other compensation - financial or otherwise.

We're joining the Tasty Tuesday blog hop today.  This is a blog hop that celebrates good food, sponsored by Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kols Notes.

Hurry - Third Annual National Pet Food Drive Ends Sunday

Petco and the Petco Foundation are partnering with Best Friends Animal Society and Hill's Science Diet to host the annual National Pet Food Drive through November 11, 2012.

Donations of dog and cat food are being accepted at every Petco and Unleashed by Petco to help families have a nutritious and happy Thanksgiving with their pets.  Each store is partnering with a local food bank or animal welfare groups to see to it that the donations go directly to the folks who need it most.

Best Friends Animal Society is helping supply the volunteer manpower in the stores to educate the clientele about the mission and help garner donations.

Once again, Hill's Science Diet is committing to match every bag of Hill's Science Diet dog and cat food donated, up to 80,000 pounds.  This year's goal is to get a half-million pounds of pet food donated.  People can donate whatever brand they'd like, but they maximize their donation by making it Hill's Science Diet.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Jerky Dog Treats | Product Review

There's no doubt about it.

Our taste testers love Chewy.com for sending us this product to review.

They just wish Chewy.com had sent more!

Chewy.com sent us a 3.25 oz package of Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats in Chicken Jerky flavor in order to try their home delivery of pet food and treats service.

According to their website, Blue Buffalo's Wilderness Trail Treats Chicken Jerky is a chicken strip.
  • All natural ingredients:  chicken, dried cane molasses and salt.
  • No chicken or poultry by-product meals.
  • No corn, no wheat, no soy.
  • No artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.

Guaranteed analysis:
  • Crude Protein   50.0% minimum
  • Crude Fat    2.0% minimum
  • Crude Fiber   2.0% maximum
  • Moisture   38.0% maximum
Blue Buffalo does suggest that Blue Wilderness Jerky Treats be kept in a cool, dry place.  Refrigerating after opening is recommended.

The Chewy.com web site suggests that these treats are perfect for dogs with food-related allergies or pets sensitive to commonly used treat fillers.

They also note that they're so delicious that pets might forget to chew. Jeffie and Rudy would agree with that!  This definitely has to be their favorite taste test.

As soon as we opened the package, both dogs were eager to begin their duties.  The Dog Daddy held them back while I examined the jerky treats.  Looks and smells exactly like what it is:  dried chicken.
After only the first taste, our soft-mouthed retriever boys couldn't help themselves from trying to chomp another jerky treat.  Jeffie tried to get extras by shaking paws.

Then he spontaneously sat up to beg for more.  Note:  this is NOT a trick he's been trained or encouraged to do.  This was truly spontaneous and all his own idea.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Chicken Jerky treats are a huge hit at our house.  In fact, I'll be ordering more from Chewy.com
Here's why:
  • Blue Buffalo is made in the US.  These treats do not contain any meat from China (or anywhere else in Asia).  All meat is sourced from US meat suppliers.
  • These Blue Buffalo treats are all natural.
  • Chewy.com has super fast home delivery service
  • Chewy.com has an easy to navigate web site with responsive customer service
  • Chewy.com offers over 120 brands of pet food and treats with free shipping on any order over $49
  • Chewy.com supports animal shelters and rescue groups with an easy way to raise funds with their Shelter & Rescue Network.
  • The dogs LOVE them!
We're pleased to recommend both Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Jerky dog treats and Chewy.com!
Note:  Before our taste tests, we did research the issue of recalls on Blue Buffalo jerky treats.   [And there were none.]

Tasty Tuesday Pet Product Review: YumZies Grain Free Dog Treats

One of our reviewers.
At Talking Dogs, we're big fans of Mr. Chewy, the online pet food retailer.

So, when Mr. Chewy contacted us to see if we'd like to review a new dog treat called YumZies, we jumped at the chance.  [read our full review of Mr. Chewy here.]

YumZies is a grain free, soft - moist dog treat made in the United States by Nootie.

YumZies are made with real chicken, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and natural flavors.  YumZies contain no wheat, corn, or soy and are easily digestible.  They also contain no artificial preservatives or flavors.

YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor - Ingredients:
Chicken, Potato Flour, Pea Powder, Tapioca Starch, Glycerin, Fish Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Pea Flour, Natural Flavor, Salt, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Natural Bacon Flavor, Lecithin, Garlic Powder, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Phosphoric Acid, Ginger Powder, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Bisulfate, Cultured Dextrose, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Citric Acid (preservative), Rosemary Extract.

YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor - Guaranteed Analysis:

As always, we received super fast delivery from Mr. Chewy and our package of YumZies arrived well packed for shipping.  YumZies are attractively packaged and we like that the first ingredient is real chicken, as well as that there are no grains in this dog treat.
Rudy and Jeffie examined the packaging and pronounced it barking good!
When we ripped open the YumZies bag, the humans at our house were not too keen with the smell of the treats, but the dogs were definitely thrilled.  YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor Treats definitely passed the dog taste test.
Our cautious Golden Retriever, Jeffie, carefully took the first taste test of YumZies.
We'd rate YumZies dog treats as excellent for their natural ingredients, grain free, preservative free recipe.  We especially like that YumZies are manufactured in the USA.  YumZies dog treats come in 6 ounce bags with a built in zipper to keep them fresh.  Price is $6.99 per bag.

Our dogs love YumZies!
Rudy eagerly waits his turn for another YumZies dog treat.
Our yellow Labrador Retriever, Rudy, was very excited to try a new dog treat!
Mr. Chewy carries a full line of YumZies dog treats in several flavors:   YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor (which we tried), YumZies Cheese Flavor, Yumzies Peanut Butter Flavor, and YumZies Barbecue Chicken Flavor.  They're also available in Mini - training size treats.

If you're looking for USA made, grain free, natural dog treats, give YumZies at Mr. Chewy a try!

Mr. Chewy Online Pet Food Retailer: Product Review

We love Mr. Chewy!  Mr. Chewy is an online pet food retailer offering over 70 brands and subscription based ordering for hassle free delivery.  They ship throughout the continental US and offer free shipping for any order over $49.

A couple of weeks ago Mr. Chewy offered us a special $50 promotional code to use on their website in exchange for an honest review of their services.  We were happy to agree.

Living in a very rural area, we have limited resources for pet food.  When we switched to natural, human grade ingredient dog kibble a few years ago our options were extremely limited.  In fact, there were only a couple brands available locally.  Our situation is very similar in terms of dog treats.  Most online sources we checked had shipping fees that made our wallet cringe.

Not only did Mr. Chewy have our usual brand of dog food available, once we added a package of dog treats to the cart, the shipping really was free.  Well, the truth is that we were so excited by the selection available, we added more than one package of treats to our shopping cart!

We loved how easy it was to shop at Mr. Chewy.  Products are categorized logically and it's super easy to find your usual brand.  When shopping dog treats, we found we could narrow products by pet, brand,  life stage (age), and/or specialty.

In addition to dog food and dog treats, Mr. Chewy offers potty pads, cat food and cat treats, cat litter, and popular flea and tick treatments.  Their website has live chat to answer questions.  If you're uncomfortable ordering online you can call the Mr. Chewy toll number during business hours.

We placed our online order for a 40 pound bag of our usual dog food, plus several packages of treats, on March 4.  We received a prompt email confirmation of our order and, on March 5, a notice our order had shipped.  Our order arrived on March 8 via FedEx delivery.  Super fast service!  This was a big, heavy carton, but even with that hunky bag of dog food, the contents were so well packed that our dog treats arrived in great shape.

Here's why we love Mr. Chewy:
  • Convenience - Quick and easy online ordering with super fast delivery to our front door.
  • Selection - access to a wide variety of brands and products (Especially important for we of the rural persuasion.)
  • Competitive Prices
  • Free Shipping with orders over $49 (and it is very easy to achieve that price point in the cart)  Orders under $49 ship for a flat shipping fee of only $4.95.
And, finally, we love Mr. Chewy's Refer Your Friends Program.  We signed up to see how it worked.  We received a referral code that will allow any friends using it to receive 10% off their first order.  PLUS, Mr. Chewy will donate $10 for each friend that orders from my code.  Donations go to the North Shore Animal League, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and Bideawee.

We highly recommend Mr. Chewy!  If you'd like to save 10% off your first order, use our referral code at checkout:  SUE5251    Shop in the convenience of your home, have your pet food delivered to your front door, and support organizations that help animals!
