National Animal Shelter Check In Day is Saturday

Join Best Friends Animal Society and other pet lovers on Saturday, November 10 for the second annual National Animal Shelter Check-in Day, designed to shine a giant, digital spotlight on homeless pets around our country.

How do you participate?
Go to your local animal shelter and "check-in" using your mobile phone's geo-location app.  While you're there, take a picture of a dog or cat and share it.  Please use the #CheckinDay hashtag so your tweet appears in the Best Friends Twitter Ticker.  Depending on the shelter's rules, you could even volunteer by walking a dog or getting silly with a cat.

It's easy!

Click here for a list of Best Friends participating No More Homeless Pet® Network partners. Or, check in at any animal shelter near you – wherever you are - on November 10!

Join the campaign today and help spread the word.

Hurry - Third Annual National Pet Food Drive Ends Sunday

Petco and the Petco Foundation are partnering with Best Friends Animal Society and Hill's Science Diet to host the annual National Pet Food Drive through November 11, 2012.

Donations of dog and cat food are being accepted at every Petco and Unleashed by Petco to help families have a nutritious and happy Thanksgiving with their pets.  Each store is partnering with a local food bank or animal welfare groups to see to it that the donations go directly to the folks who need it most.

Best Friends Animal Society is helping supply the volunteer manpower in the stores to educate the clientele about the mission and help garner donations.

Once again, Hill's Science Diet is committing to match every bag of Hill's Science Diet dog and cat food donated, up to 80,000 pounds.  This year's goal is to get a half-million pounds of pet food donated.  People can donate whatever brand they'd like, but they maximize their donation by making it Hill's Science Diet.

Dogs Wrap Christmas Gifts and Decorate Cookies Video

Take a moment's break from the hustle and bustle of your day and enjoy watching these darling dogs decorate cookies and help celebrate the Christmas holiday in style.

Produced by Best Friends Animal Society, this is great fun!   Even if you saw this charming Christmas video last year, you need to see it again!  Though we wouldn't trust Lucy, Jeffie or Rudy to decorate the Christmas cookies, I do wish we could get them to help with the gift wrapping!  One thing is for sure, we love this dog video's message:  Adopt a homeless dog.

Puppy Mills and Pet Stores

We'll be barking about puppy mills this week as we count down to September 17 - National Puppy Mill Awareness Day 2011.

As long as people buy puppies from pet stores, puppy mills will continue.  It's basic supply and demand.  When people do their homework and purchase their new puppy from a reputable dog breeder, or adopt their new puppy from an animal shelter or rescue group it helps to put puppy mills out of business.

Take a look at this excellent video from Best Friends Animal Society.  It's a crash course on puppy mills and the connection to pet stores.  And remember:

  • Never buy a puppy online or in a pet store or from classified ads
  • Adopt your next dog or puppy from a shelter or rescue group.
  • Have your dog spayed or neutered.
