Hey there, I'm Harley! I'm an adorable hound mix weighing about 43 pounds who was found as a stray then brought here to Wayside Waifs! I'm so happy I made my way here because I'm getting the second chance at life that I deserve. I can't wait to find my peeps and get to my new home. Strangers can be a bit scary so I'll need to have time to warm up to my people and really get comfortable. I'll do best with children over the age of 5 and as the only furry friend in the house. I'll enjoy a nice, quiet home so I can relax. 

Exercise is an important part of any happy, healthy pup's life so let's get active! I love to explore the world on walks or romp around the backyard. I have a pretty moderate energy level so when we're done getting our workout in I won't mind curling up next to you for a relaxing, afternoon snuggle. Belly rubs welcomed! Adopt Sherman a #SeniorDog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This good looking guy is Sherman.  He's an 8 year old senior dog who's had a rough life.  Rescued from a hoarding situation in New York City, he was taken in by Wayside Waifs in Kansas City.

Wayside Waifs describes Sherman as a Hound / Retriever mix.  He already knows basic commands, but would be a great candidate for further training.

How's it going everyone? My name is Sherman and I come to you from New York City. Wanna good dog and pal to call your own? Fuhgeddaboudit!! I am the boy for you.

Let me give you a little history on myself so you can get to know me. I have had kind of a rough life up to this point, and I am just looking for a family to call my own. I am an 8 year old Hound/Retriever mix. So I am a little older, but you know what they say "Like a fine wine, I just get better with time." Like I said, I came here from the Big Apple to find a new life and new family. I was transferred here from the ASPCA that rescued me from a hoarding like situation. I did not always get the care and training I needed, but I am ready to start life now and do whatever you need me to do.

Like a true New Yorker, I had to fight and be tough to get along. However, now that I am here in Kansas City, I am ready to find a nice home that I can be with a good family. I already know commands like sit and come, but I think it is going to be best that I get some more training so I can be an even better companion for you. I haven't really had a home of my own, so it is going to be best to get some refresher courses on house training and basic obedience also. I do also like to get outside and have some exercise that will keep me mentally and physically happy. I am older, but I still have a lot of life and energy to give in this body.

So let's talk a little about when we go home together. I am going to need a place with older kids living there and I will also want to meet all new canine family before we go as well. Coming from the environment that I did, I do get a little stressed out and take some time to warm up. Once I do warm up to my new family, I am going to show you how great I am. I will usually seek out love and attention, but when I do I love to get petted as much as you want to. If you just have patience with me to help me learn and let me adjust, then I promise I will be the best dog you will ever want.

Oh, and before I forget, I do have one more thing to let you know. Like any New Yorker, with pizza, pasta, or steak, I do love my food. I am not saying I need to eat that kind of meal, but I will need to eat in a safe place away from everyone. I just want to enjoy my dinner in peace before we get back to all the family loving on me.

So as you can see, it has been a rough go for me. But I am not complaining one bit. I came here to seek out a new life and start with a clean slate. Give me your time and patience, and I will give you my unconditional love and a lot of fun. Take a chance on me; you won't be sorry you did.

Adopt Jackson a #Beagle #Hound #Dog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

Meet Jackson.  He's a 6 year old hound / Beagle mixed breed dog currently available for adoption from Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City, MO.

According to shelter staff and volunteers, Jackson is a goofy, silly, loving boy.  He loves to play fetch and go for walks.  Currently he's learning some agility and seems to be a natural.  Jackson is already housebroken, and knows a wide range of commands.

Hello there! I'm adorable Jackson here, just looking for a brand new home to call my own. It's been sort of a rough ride for me, but I refuse to let that get me down. I am a sweet, smart, playful, and fun dog with a delightful personality to match. I can't let the fact that I'm homeless once again make me lose faith that my forever family is out there. Perhaps you are looking for me right now! Well, I'm at Wayside, waiting for you. If you have the time and patience and dedication to work with me and help me be the best dog I can be, I will be the most wonderful companion ever.

I am an almost 6 year old, perfect medium size, already housetrained, Hound/Beagle mix. I'm in the prime of my life. And I am such a special boy, with gentle eyes and the softest hound ears you've ever seen. I originally came to Wayside a few years ago, as a transfer from the shelter in Springfield, MO. I got adopted, but things didn't end up working out for me there. I can't remember what exactly happened, but my owner gave me away to her neighbor and somehow I ended up as a stray, picked up by Kansas City Animal Control. Lucky for me, the people at Wayside welcomed me back with open arms. That was 2 years ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday, because life as a stray was lonely and sad. Eventually, I found another new home and I'd been with my most recent family for the past 2 years, before getting returned to Wayside yet again. So now I wait and hope my true forever family finds me. Maybe today will be my day. I hope so.

I'm such a lover! I'm affectionate and friendly, goofy and silly. I love to play fetch and play with my toys and go for walks and explore the world. I've even been having some fun at the agility park here at Wayside and they tell me I'm a natural. I walk very well on my leash, but I do have a hound nose, so I like to stop and smell all the great things along the way. In my new home, I'm hoping for a fenced in yard, to keep me safe and secure. And I don't really think I'd be a good apartment dog, because sometimes I'm vocal. I have so much I want to tell you, so I hope my hound voice makes you smile. I'm a smart guy and I know all sorts of commands that I can't wait to show you. The Wayside staff has been using a training method for me called Nothing In Life Is Free and I respond very well to it, so I hope to continue my training in my new home. It teaches me, in a positive way, that you are in charge and that I have to earn what I want in life. So I will sit or shake or wait patiently for a treat, for example. Your adoption counselor can give you more information on this. I'm the perfect dog to train, because not only am I smart, but I love to learn, I'm treat motivated, I love it when you praise me, and I have a soft and gentle mouth when taking treats from you.

One of the things my last family noticed about me was that I was extra protective of my stuff. And I can be very serious with my food. The staff here at Wayside has been working with me to modify my behavior and it's working! I'm learning that food is something I will always have enough of. In my new home, I will need a safe place to eat where I don't feel threatened, and please remove my bowl when I am finished eating. I'll be happiest in a home without kids under 15 and as your only dog. I have sort of a big 'bubble' around me and I don't really like it when kids or other dogs try to get in. I'm wonderful with adults though! I'm fun, happy, affectionate, and loyal as can be

I hope you're looking for a happy-go-lucky sort of dog like me to spend your life with. With a little time and dedication and training and exercise and love, I know I can be the most fantastic companion you've ever known. I know I ask for a lot, but I give a lot in return. Adopt Hansel a #Hound #Pitbull #Puppy @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

Though I like to think puppies and young dogs find forever homes quickly, the sad truth is that they don't always.  This fellow at Wayside Waifs animal shelter caught my eye and I couldn't resist featuring him and giving him some social media promotion.

That face! Those ears!  What a cutie patootie!

Meet Hansel.  This adorable fellow is a hound / pit bull mix.  At only 9 months he's got lots of fun, puppy energy and the perfect age for training. 

Here's Hansel's adoption message:

Hi, my name is Hansel and I hope you have a trail of bread crumbs leading to your house. You see, I'm a nine-month-old boy who once was lost but now I'm found, well, at least temporarily. What I'm really searching for is my "Forever Home" and then I really will be found. I'm a sweet and cuddly, 46-pound, brown-and-tan Pit Bull Terrier mix with the sweetest face ever.

I'm still a puppy so I've got lots of energy and I love to PLAY. And like some little kids, I like to gobble my food so I could use some training to slow me down a bit at my food bowl and to curb my enthusiasm a bit when I see you want to be with me! Woo hoo-let's go! Training me should be easy because I am treat motivated but because I'm such an enthusiastic boy, I would be better with children five and older. Adopt Brother a Hound Dog Mix @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This sweet soul is Brother.  He's a 3 year old hound dog mix.  Originally from New Orleans, LA, Brother was relocated to Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City, MO in hopes he'd have a better chance of finding a home.

Brother is shy, but has been gaining confidence, especially thanks to Wayside Waifs' Confidence College.  It's hard to learn to trust humans, but Brother is doing just that.

I'll let Brother tell you his story:

Hi there, I'm Brother. This is such a hard thing for me to do...stepping into the spotlight to share my story with you makes me uncomfortable and self-conscious. But sometimes in life, you have to take risks and do things you don't want to do. I understand that. And that's why I'm here today, opening my heart to you, hoping you might be the kind person who needs a dog like me in your life. I am super sweet and fun, but sometimes shy and unsure and afraid, at least until I get to know you. So life can be scary to me. I'm trying so hard to fit in.

I am a handsome and unique, 3 year old, medium sized, Hound mix. I'm cute and playful, in the most fun sort of way! I like to run and romp and chase after my toys. I make people smile, without even trying. I haven't always had that effect on people though. I guess I've had sort of a tough life. I was homeless and living in New Orleans, when the shelter I was staying at decided I'd have a better chance at a happy life if I relocated here to Kansas City. The thought of moving across the country terrified me! When I got to Wayside, I sat in my kennel and trembled, hoping no one would notice me. I felt so alone.

Each day though, things were slowly getting better. I was enrolled in Wayside's "Confidence College", for shy and fearful dogs. I started to let a few people into my life. I started to feel not quite so alone. After a few weeks, I let everyone know that I was ready to start my new life...which will hopefully be with you. I'm still shy though and I probably always will be. Quick movements and strange noises are still scary to me. But I'm gaining confidence every single day now! I'm starting to feel more social and brave and special. I'm having fun and even forgetting my fears at times. Still though, I need you to take things very slowly with me, especially when we first get home and I'm getting settled into my new routine with you. Please let me go at my own pace and don't push me into situations before I am ready. I need you to be patient and gentle and calm with me. Please offer me plenty of positive reinforcement, by praising me and giving me treats when I'm a good boy. This will help me gain confidence, while learning what you expect from me. I'm a smart dog who loves to make you happy, so I'll make an excellent student. I already know the sit and down commands, but I'd love to learn more, so please teach me!

Once I get comfortable with you and learn to trust you, I am an affectionate and loving dog. I love to be by your side as you pet me. And I love to curl up next to you on the couch, as we unwind for the day. I will make a loyal and devoted companion for you. I'm looking for a home that is calm, low-key, and quiet. I will be happiest without kids under the age of at least 5, since they are scary to me. And I was never really socialized much with other dogs in my past, so I'm sort of unsure around them. I seem to do better with females than males. Please just bring the whole family, including both human and canine, out to meet me and we'll see how we all do together. I just really want this adoption to work out, so I need to find the right family for me! Thanks for understanding.

I hope you're the kind of person who celebrates the little things in life. And I hope you're looking for a sweet and simple dog who likes to quietly watch the world go by. I don't feel the need to be the life of the party. I'm happy being me, a shy and unsure and sometimes awkward dog who doesn't always know the right way to act just yet. But I'm getting there! Adopt Clyde a Doberman Mix Dog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This handsome fellow is Clyde.  He's a 6 year old Doberman Pinscher / Hound mix who was rescued from a hoarding situation in New York.  Somehow he found himself at Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City, Missouri, where he's now looking for a loving forever home.

Here's Clyde's adoption story:

Hey everyone. My name is Clyde, and boy do I have a story to tell you all. So just pull up a chair, relax and let me tell you the story of a boy named Clyde.

I came to Wayside after some of my human friends rescued me from a hoarding situation in New York. So I have come a long way to find my new home, and I cannot wait to me my new family. Now you may be thinking I should be partnered with someone named Bonnie, but that is a different story and mine is much better.

I am a 6 year old Doberman Pinscher/Hound mix. Yes I am a little older, but that makes all my stories so much better. I can be a little shy at first when I meet people, but once I warm up I sure do like to get lots of love. Don't let that fool you as I am not a homebody. I love to get out, sniff, walk, run and when I am comfortable with everyone I just would like to play. 

Now, my story keeps going on as well. I can get along with other dogs and small humans, but I just need to meet them first. I just want to make sure that we all get along so our story won't end. I do know how to sit and love to get treats, but I can always learn new things as well. Also I may need to be refreshed on my house training, but that won't be a problem. I just want a new chapter and any new stories I can write, I am ready to do with you. 

I have a new lease on life and a new chance to write a new chapter in my life. I would love that chapter to include my new family. Will you be the happy ending I have always been looking for? Come see me and let's find out.

Adopt Boudreaux a Hound Mix Dog @WaysideWaifs in KCMO

This handsome boy is Boudreaux.  He's a hound dog mix and nearly 2 years old.  Even with lots of pep and energy, Boudreaux is fast learning to walk nicely on a leash.  As you can see in his adoption video, he sits nicely for treats and loves running zoomies!

Hi there! I'm Boudreaux, a 1 ½ year old hound mix and I'm looking for a new home. I was transferred to Wayside from another shelter that had run out of space. I'm thankful for so many things here at Wayside - love and attention from the staff and volunteers, healthy food and treats, a nice, safe place to sleep. All of those things are nice, but I've spent way too much time in shelters lately. I'm ready to go home! I have dreams and plans for a fun, active life in a loving family, and I'm ready to start NOW!!! Please keep reading about me - maybe you'll realize that I'm the special one who's been missing from your life!

I'm a happy boy - big, fun and athletic, with lots of energy and ambition! I want a family who will appreciate my active, inquisitive personality. I love going on walks and exploring with my humans, and I have to admit I'm kind of passionate about chasing squirrels and other small critters! That particular talent of mine will come in very handy if you need some help chasing unwanted critters out of your yard, but when we're walking together on leash, it would be best if I wore a harness so you'll have better control if I get distracted. It's no big deal - I look very handsome in my harness, and lots of dogs wear them. It will make our walks much more pleasant for both of us.

Speaking of looking handsome, hopefully you noticed my pictures! I'm a real handsome guy, beautifully marked in champagne and white, and I've got a sleek, athletic build. I've been told I've got some of the softest silkiest ears ever! They're kind of irresistible to my human friends here at Wayside, and that's OK with me because I happen to LOVE ear rubs, especially after my daily exercise! Being a hound and all, I do love outside activities, but I also love people and want to be with my family wherever they are. Please don't leave me alone out in the yard for long periods of time - I could get bored and start looking for mischief! I hope I find a home where I'm included in family activities as much as possible. Hounds like me are goofy and fun, but can also become bored and anxious when separated too long from the people they love, and believe me....I will love you to pieces!!

Because of my need for lots of exercise and my high prey drive, I need a home with no cats, and no small furry critters, and I'd also love a large, well fenced yard. It's just that when I catch a good scent, I really want to go after it and I could have a tendency to jump. I know my family will want to keep me safe, and I sure wouldn't want to escape, get lost and worry them. A good fence will really help with all of that. Because I'm big and energetic, for now it would be best if there were no kids under 5 in my new home. It's just that I might accidently knock over a toddler, and I'd feel awful about that!

I like some other dogs, but I can be kind of rude in my play style with them, and I need to work on my doggy social skills. I really should meet all family members before going home - especially dogs and kids. I really want it to work out between us FOREVER, and whatever we can do up front to ensure that, I'm all for it!

I am a super smart and focused guy. I'm treat motivated and I already know how to sit when you ask. I'm very trainable, and I would definitely benefit from basic obedience training. The staff here at Wayside recommends positive reinforcement training. That's when I'm rewarded with praise and healthy treats when I'm a good boy. That helps me know what's expected of me, and I'll try my best to please you. Please ask the adoption counselor for more information about this. The folks here also think I'm at least partially housebroke, because I know to potty when I go outside. Please be patient with me though - it's hard to learn and maintain good house manners when you've lived in a shelter for a while. It may take a little time for me get used to my new environment, and learn what's expected of me in my new home. I promise your patience will be worth it!

This sweet senior dog is Sophie.  She a spayed female, tricolor Harrier and about 7 years old.  Sophie has a beautiful tricolor coat and lovely floppy ears.

Redbone Coonhound Jingle Will Steal Your Heart

 Meet Jingle, a beautiful Redbone Coonhound dog.

No, you're not going crazy.  No, it's not the first stages of Alzheimer's, nor is it deja vu.  You've seen Jingle before.

In fact, you've seen Jingle twice on this blog.  The first time was in our Q and A interview with Kristi and Glenn Austin about fostering dogs.  The second was in our Follow-up Friday blog post where we gave you an update on Jingle.

Jingle will steal your heart.  She stole mine.

Jingle was found as a stray with her two 8 month old puppies by animal control in Christiansburg, VA.  No one stepped up to claim this little family.  The puppies were adopted, but Jingle remained homeless.

Pulled from the Montgomery County Friends of Animal Care and Control by City Dogs Rescue, thanks to the persuasive efforts of Kristi Austin who volunteered to provide foster care while Jingle was vetted, had surgery and was spayed. Jingle was saved.

Jingle is described as "one of the sweetest hounds to come through the shelter (and we see a LOT of hounds!)"

While in foster care with the Austins, Jingle got used to hardwood floors and enjoyed cuddling.

Jingle is 8 years old, a female Redbone Coonhound, and weighs 57 pounds.  She is house broken and crate trained.  Though she is excellent with other dogs, she not fond of cats.  Jingle adores people and does great in the car.

Jingle does well on leash and loves to go for walks.  She's playful, submissive, friendly, and shy.  Jingle is a low maintenance dog.

 While in foster care with the Austin's, Jingle learned about hardwood floors and became a foster that was very hard to give up.  Kristi says Jingle is the "sweetest girl.  I look over at her and she starts wagging her tail."

City Dogs Rescue was formed for one reason: to rescue adoptable dogs in overcrowded and high-kill shelters where resources are severely limited.  They offer a lifeline to as many of these pups as possible.  City Dogs Rescue is a network of volunteers who foster dogs with volunteer families and donated boarding facilities.  By finding dogs permanent and loving homes in the DC metropolitan area, they enrich the lives of both canine and human.

We always feature an adoptable dog on Sunday at Talking Dogs.  They're all special and they all deserve a loving forever home.  However, today's dog is more special to me.

You see, this dog has captured my heart.  It's one of those inexplicable things that just happens.  Like it or not, I feel a connection with this particular dog.   If our lives were in a different place, there's no doubt in my mind that she'd be joining our family.  Please help me network and share to find Jingle that perfect forever home.
