Wordless Wednesday: Dog Cookies!

One cookie left for Lucy... who hid under the table as soon as she saw the camera.  Rudy and Jeffie could care less about the camera when there's cheese involved.  These dog treats are a favorite at our house.  Fetch our Cheese Dog Biscuit recipe and let your furry friends give them a try.

Dog Lover Christmas Cookie Cutters from Fancy Flours

Photo: Fancy Flours
I was surfing around on the web this weekend to do some Christmas shopping and stumbled on some incredible dog breed cookies.  They were a bit pricey for my budget, so I couldn't resist trying to find some cookie cutters to make my own.

That's how I discovered Fancy Flours.  As I explored their web site I couldn't help but think my face probably looked a lot like Lucy's at her begging best.  I refuse to disclose whether or not I drooled.  However, I have to say the dog lover cookie cutters at Fancy Flours are barking good!

Do they have all dog breeds?  No.  However, what they do have are pretty dog-gone cool: Scottish Terrier, Poodle, Greyhound,  Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Bull Dog, Corgi, Chihuahua, Dachshund, St Bernard dogs.  Plus they have paw prints, fire hydrants and the old standby dog bone.  Checkout the Corgi cookie cutter, the Dachshund cookie cutter, and the Golden Retriever cookie cutter:

Golden Retriever Dog Cookie Cutter:  Fancy Flours
Best of all for my gift shopping, they have a Cookie Cutter Dog Lovers Set of 17 cookie cutters that include:  Collie, Greyhound, Schnauzer, Irish Setter, Terrier, French Poodle, Dachshund, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever.  The set also includes 3 sizes of dog bones, small puppy, heart, fire hydrant, dog house and paw print! These cookie cutters are made of annodized aluminum and two recipes are included.
Dog Breed Cookie Cutter Assortment:  Fancy Flours
Cookies not your thing?  Okay, all you cupcake lovers... check out the Sugar Dog Assortment of molded sugar dog DecOns.
Sugar Dog DecOns:  Fancy Flours

Hmmm... would it be terribly rude if we made dog treats with these cookie cutters?   Somehow I don't think Lucy, Jeffie or Rudy would object to snarfing down, say, a Chihuahua...   Bone appetit!

Wire Hair Fox Terrier Wins National Dog Show

Top Dog, Eira, Wire Fox Terrier | Photo: PeoplePets
Yesterday a Wire Fox Terrier aptly named Steele Your Heart won Best in Show at the 2011 National Dog Show.  Steele Your Heart, also known as Eira (pronounced Ira) beat out 1,500 other dogs to win the competition.

Eira triumphed over six other dog group winners: an Affenpinscher named Joey who won the Toy Group;  a Whippet named Chanel who won the Hound Group;  a Bernese Mountain Dog named Tanner who won the Working Group;  a Dalmatian named Ian who won the Non-Sporting Group;  an Australian Shepherd named Reckon who won the Herding Group;  and an English Springer Spaniel named Zelda who won the Sporting Group.

Eira is four years old and from California. This is her 17th Best in Show title.  She'll try to continue her winning streak at the Westminster Kennel Club show in February in New York.  A win there would make her the third dog to win both competitions in the same year.  In 2009, Eira's handler, Gabriel Rangel, won both shows with a Scottish Terrier named Sadie.

The National Dog Show is hosted each year by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia.

Random Thoughts

Can you spot the buck?
Deer hunting season is over.  Finally.  I hate hearing the gun blasts.  In fact, all three dogs and I flinch.  They don't like the sound.  I can't help thinking about the deer that visit us, coming through our place for a drink of water or stopping to graze not far from the horses.  During hunting season they're more likely to streak through, though, as if chased by the hounds of hell.
There he is.

This fellow found a good place to stop and catch his breath.  He's listening for danger, though.  I'm sure he heard the dogs.  They were in the house going crazy.
I think he's trying to tell me something.

It's also that time of year when I try to be vigilant about keeping the bird feeders full.  Our "regulars" are probably used to my rather irregular attempts to attract them.  However, in my own defense, I do succeed when winter really arrives.
Just focus on Lucy's beautiful face...
And it's also that time of year when I selfishly promote my For Love of a Dog jewelry and gifts.   Please note that I did not say: shamelessly.  Internally I feel a twinge of ... well, not shame.  Not really.  After all, Talking Dogs is the blog presence of For Love of a Dog, so there's bound to be some promotion.  Especially because we are busy as Santa's elves around here.  However, I do sometimes feel as though I hijack my own blog!  So, for those of you who'd prefer to not be bothered with such, my sincere apologies!

Meanwhile, I have books to review (next up is Old Dogs by Gene Weingarten), products to review (next up is the Bottoms Up Harness from Silver Tails), dog treat recipes to share (Christmas baking is not just for humans at our house) and dog news I want to bark about.

I'm guessing Santa's elves never actually sleep!  Obviously, Lucy does not have that problem.

Thanksgiving is Going to the Dogs

Thanksgiving may be turkey themed at your house, but here it is definitely dogs, dogs and more dogs.  Yes, we'll be roasting and feasting on the traditional bird and all the trimmings.  Yes, the dogs will take up their best positions in the kitchen for catching any little bits that might come their way.

However, the big thing is... the National Dog Show!  Hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, the National Dog Show is one of the oldest benched dog shows in the United States;  it's been held since 1933.  Dogs are judged in groups (ie: Toy, Herding, Non-Sporting, Terrier, Sporting, Hound, and Working) and a top dog will be named as Best in Show.  Last year an Irish Setter, three year old Clooney of Washington State, won Best in Show; in 2009 a Scottish Terrier, Sadie, took home top honors.

The National Dog Show features over 3,000 dogs in 185 dog breeds.  The 50 top contenders will be spotlighted on NBC-TV  (MSNBC Sports - the National Dog Show) on Thursday, November 24 at noon in all time zones, following the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Last year we were thrilled to see the six new dog breeds that entered the ring:  Boykin Spaniel, Leonberger, Cane Corso, Icelandic Sheepdog, Bluetick Coonhound and Redbone Coonhound.

This year six additional dog breeds will join the competition:  Norwegian Lundehund (called the "puffin dog" in Norway), Xoloitzcuintli (called the "show-low"),  American English CoonhoundCesky TerrierEntlebucher Mountain Dog and  Finnish Lapphund.  Plus we always love John O'Hurley's running commentary during the show.

Just can't tear yourself away from that dining room table?  Get that dvr set and ready, dog people!

Adopt Nina a Pet Bull Terrier Puppy Dog

Now, here's a gorgeous dog girl who's looking for a forever home.  Nina is a spayed female black and white Pit Bull Terrier dog.  Well, actually, at only 7 months old, Nina is still a puppy with all that puppy energy.  She prefers to go outside to relieve herself, so shelter staff believe she's housebroken.  She'd make a wonderful companion for an active lifestyle.

If you've got room in your heart and in your home, consider adopting Nina.  For more information, contact the Humane Society of Missouri in St Louis at 314-951-1562.  Nina's animal shelter id number is A518119.

Working Dogs Need Retirement, Too

Max - NK9WD Mascot
According to the National K-9 Working Dog, Inc organization, the majority of the dogs that serve to protect the general public are discharged from duty with no benefits.  The lucky ones get adopted by their human partners while the not so fortunate are put to sleep.

The National K-9 Working Dog was established to help working and retired police, search and rescue, and service dog adoptive families with the expenses that go with keeping such a dog comfortable in their retirement years.  They believe that no retired working dog should ever have to suffer discomfort or premature death because of a lack of financial support.

They are creating a national database registry for all working dogs.  Once identified these dogs can be given the equipment and care necessary to protect their lives and wellbeing.  In addition the Nk9WD conducts public awareness workshops and events to educate the public about service dogs, incuding the rights of service dogs and their handlers under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Their most recent project is the National K-9 Learning and Earning Program which includes a partnership with fifth and sixth graders at Laurel Intermediate School in Laurel, Delaware.  Through donations from local businesses and individual, the children will be paid a penny a day for good schoolwork and attendance.  The money is invested in a CD and eventually goes to the care of regired service dogs that are adopted by police officers.  According to Jay Meranchik, founder of NK9WD, "Our goal is to get these children to relate to what happens to police K-9s after working in a job without retirement benefits."

For more information about National K-9 Working Dog, Inc visit them on the web at www.nationalk-9workingdog.org .

Dog Treats Recipe: Banana & Peanut Butter

Lucy patiently waiting...
Lucy has a new favorite dog treat.  It combines two of her favorite tastes:  bananas and peanut butter.  Probably the only thing that would make it better is if it had cheese!    Actually, Lucy and Rudy are not picky eaters.  They'll eat almost anything.  However, both really love bananas.

This recipe is quick, healthy and easy to make substitutions depending on what you have handy in the kitchen.   It has a bit of a plus with the addition of parsley for fresh breathe.

We snatched this recipe from our Newsbite from Modern Dog Magazine.   You can fetch more dog treat recipes from Talking Dogs here.  Bone appetite!

Banana & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
1 banana, peeled

1 cup oat flour (we substituted whole wheat flour)
2/3 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup dried parsley
3 tablespoons peanut butter
1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.  Smash/mash the banana in a mixing bowl.  Add the other ingredients and mix well.  Set aside for about 5 minutes.  Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each.  Place each ball on a large parchment paper-lined baking sheet.  Use a spoon to press each ball into a 1 1/2" to 2" flat coin.  Bake until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom - approximately 40 - 45 minutes.

Tuesdays definitely got tastier!  Join the Tasty Tuesday blog hop!

Book Review: The Dog Cancer Survival Guide

Talking dogs book review of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide:  Full Spectrum Treatments to Optimize Your Dog’s Life Quality & Longevity.  Written by Dr. Demian Dressler, DVM with Dr. Susan Ettinger, DVM, Dip, ACVIM (Oncology).  Published by Maui Media, LLC

Some reviewers have stated that if your dog has cancer, you need this book.  I’ll go one step further and say:  if you own a dog, you need this book.  The majority of dog owners will be forced to deal with the heartbreak of losing a dog to cancer.  In fact, if you subtract euthanasia, cancer is  the number one killer of dogs.

I can honestly say that I wish I’d had this book years ago.  I’ve lost three dogs to cancer, one only a few weeks ago.

When my review copy of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide arrived, I was a bit intimidated by the sheer size of the volume.  I began to quickly flip through, thinking I’d set it aside to read later.  I found myself compelled to sit down and begin reading right away.  I’d fully expected it to be a downer, but it is the opposite.  As I read, I felt empowered by not only the detailed information, but the upbeat tone of the book.

As Dr. Dressler says:  “Dog cancer is an emergency, and if it is the tsunami you are facing, think of this book as your survival guide.”

A massive compilation of medical and scientific information could be dry, boring, and over whelming.  It’s not.  The Dog Cancer Survival Guide is written in clear, straightforward, conversational layperson’s language.

You’ll find everything you wanted to know but didn’t know to ask about canine cancer veterinary treatment, both conventional, as well as holistic treatment options, including botanical nutraceuticals, supplements, nutrition and mind-body medicine.  In addition, there’s a section devoted to how to work with your veterinarian to develop an individualized treatment plan for your dog.

This book has a wonderful balance of factual information about various forms of canine cancer and their treatment, plus a healthy dose of psychological and compassionate support for dog owners.

The clearer your mind and heart are, the easier you learn," says Dr. Dressler. "The more you learn about cancer and how to treat it, the wiser the decisions you will make about your dog’s treatment. The calmer you are, the more likely your dog will be calm, too.”

The organization of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide is excellent and intuitive.  Each chapter includes flagged side notes which range from comments from Dr. Ettinger, examples of true stories of dog’s with cancer, further information and more.

Dr. Demian Dressler is a general practice veterinarian in Maui, Hawaii, who first published The Dog Cancer Survival Guide as an eBook sold to readers of Dr. Dressler’s blog www.DogCancerBlog.com.  Dr. Susan Ettinger is a veterinary oncologist at the Animal Specialty Center in New York City.  They first met at The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in the 1990’s.  In The dog Cancer Survival Guide they’ve taken their decades of clinical experience and thorough research of the current literature to explain dog cancer for the lay person.

Talking Dogs recommends this book without any reservation.  What a wonderful holiday gift this would be for anyone who lives with dogs.  Fetch a copy of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide today at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle or Nook.

Fetch a look at The Dog Cancer Survival Guide Table of Contents on our Good Reading page.
