The Laurel Canyon Animal Company

If you've enjoyed our Dog Song Saturdays at Talking Dogs, you've already heard some of the barking good tunes from Laurel Canyon Animal Company.  You also know that all of us - two and four leggers - love songs about dogs, especially original songs about dogs.  That's why we've featured several of Skip Haynes compositions and dog music videos.  I thought it was about time we told you more about them.

Skip Haynes is the hit songwriter and artist who founded the Laurel Canyon Animal Company in 1999 with his neighbor, Dana Walden.  Their concept was to create a record company that produced original music exclusively for animal lovers and that could help organizations and individuals that helped animals.

Their first endeavor, Ugly dogs Need More Love - based on their neighborhood dogs - led to their second CD, Cat-A-Tonic.  Then they though it would be fun to actually work with an animal.  This led them to signing a green parrot named Carla to their label and creating and releasing I'm a Green Chicken - with Carla singing the lead vocal in the chorus.

Working with the parrot led them to the idea of interspecies musical communication, so the next animal they signed was Koko - the only lowland gorilla in the world who understands English and communicates through sign language.  Using the idea of creating music with animals, they hired intuitive animal communicator Dr. Kim Ogden.  With her input they created Songs to Make Dogs Happy.

Canine focus groups selected from over 200 dogs nationwide were assembled and questioned by Dr. Ogden as to their preferences in music and content.  The result is a unique CD of songs which dogs love.  Songs to Make Dogs Happy has been used by shelters to calm the animals, helps ease separation anxiety, and used by vets to help dogs in recovery.

Current releases from Laurel Canyon Animal Company include:

However, at Libby's house, the fellows get together with ukuleles and sing!  Libby, Where's Your Mom is dedicated to Libby the dog, who sings the chorus!  Jeffie and Rudy love the chorus!

Dog Song Saturday: Pit Bull Blues by John Shipe

Clarabelle - an adoptable dog in KCMO
It's Dog Song Saturday at Talking Dogs and we're doing something we've never done before:  an encore presentation!  Way back in October 2010, we featured Pit Bull Blues song and dog music video in honor of National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

We decided, in light of all the Pit Bull dog news of late - like the recent Maryland Court of Appeals ruling declaring all put bulls (and pit bull dog mixes) "inherently dangerous" by virtue of their looks alone and that crazy Baltimore columnist, Dan Rodrick's uninformed comments declaring pit bull dogs "four-legged time bombs" that should not be allowed in public - to take a few minutes to visually and audibly, remind folks what great dogs are called Pit Bulls.

Even if you've heard Pit Bull Blues by John Shipe before, take a moment and enjoy it again.  Then pass it along as learning tool for those who are not informed.  And while you're at it, take a look at this blog post from Oh, Corbin:  You call me a Pit Bull like it's a bad thing.  Then pass that along, too.

Grab a dog.  A Pit Bull if you're lucky enough to have one, though any dog will do.  Sit.  Stay.  Snuggle with that dog.  Relax and enjoy Pit Bull Blues written and performed by John Shipe.

In need of even more Pit Bull dog musical treats?  Then fetch our August 2011 Dog Song Saturday blog post:  Pit Bull Rescue Woman - another original song by John Shipe that celebrates real life Pit Bull rescuers from around the world.

Inspired to add a Pit Bull dog to your family?  Check out Clarabelle (above left).  She's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog and available for adoption for the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue in Kansas City, MO.

About Puppy Mills and Dog Songs

You're probably wondering about the connection between puppy mills and dogs songs.  For me the two are connected by phone calls and email messages from readers.

Over the years that I've been blogging here at Talking Dogs, I've found that I rarely get comments from readers.  However, I do receive email messages and telephone calls about blog posts I've written.

Since I began devoting Saturday's posts to Dog Song Saturday, I've received tons of fan mail thanking me.  Love to get those messages!  Some readers have even called.  One fellow from Texas talked for about half an hour about our dog songs being used to accompany a children's float in their local Christmas parade.  Now, that put a big smile on my face.

Missouri puppy mills is the other blog topic that generates quite a response.  Unfortunately, for me, it generates a lot of hate mail from commercial dog breeders (puppy mill owners.)  This past Saturday was an exception.

A toy poodle dog breeder (I'll call her Mary) from Ohio called me.  She first clarified that I was the person who'd written about [name withheld dog breeder].  I hesitantly acknowledged that was me.  In fact, I was pretty quiet and kept my answers to her initial questions to a bare minimum.  What was going through my head:  oh no, now these people have tracked down my phone number!

Wrong.  Majorly wrong.  Mary turned out to be a highly dedicated dog breeder.  She'd been approached by [name withheld] who wanted to buy some puppies from her.  Because Mary wants to know exactly where her puppies are going, she hopped on the internet and googled [name withheld].  There Mary found my blog post about her want-to-be puppy buyer... who'd lost her commercial dog breeder license in Missouri for many violations of the law.

We chatted for awhile and the conversation underscored what I've been saying for years.  A reputable dog breeder cares about their dogs.  They make sure they are well socialized, have access to good veterinary care, and they are placed in good homes.  Many follow the whole life of the puppy, keeping diligent health records, as well as show ring accomplishments noted in their files.  They certainly don't knowingly sell their puppies into slavery.

While I strongly encourage adopting from a shelter, I recognize the value of ethical, honorable dog breeders.

Hmmm... where's a dog song about that?!

Dog Song Saturday: Remember When Pit Bull Video

Every Saturday, Talking Dogs presents a dog song for your enjoyment.  Some are fun and funny; some are more thoughtful.  Today's dog song selection, Remember When, happens to fit both of those categories.

Featured in this video are two of America's most beloved Pit Bull dogs:  You may recognize Petey from Our Gang and The Little Rascals.  The lesser-known, Luke, appeared alongside his owner Roscoe Arbuckle and his wife Minta Durfee in several silent films between 1914-1920.

Technically the song, Remember When, performed here by Alan Jackson, is not a song about dogs.  However, the lyrics are a beautiful companion to the Pit Bull dog video and it's plea to remember when Pit Bulls were beloved.   This presentation is a charming encouragement to reject dog breed discrimination and breed ban laws.

Grab a dog - a pitty if you're lucky enough to have one.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Remember When.  Fetch more dog songs at Talking Dogs here.   Then come back to this blog post and scroll down today's video to explore some barking good dog blogs because today is a Pet Blogger Hop.

Dog Song Saturday: Bad Dog Song

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  We think you'll enjoy this original song about dogs.  Listen closely to the lyrics and smile at the charming video slideshow for Bad Dog Song.  The composer notes:  About ten years ago my 5 year old daughter asked me why dogs always did bad things even though they seemed to want to please us.  I couldn't think of any satisfactory answers, but being a songwriter, came back a day later with something to sing.

Grab a dog.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Bad Dog Song.  If you're in the mood for more songs (and videos) about dogs, fetch Talking Dog's Dog Songs.    Then scroll down below today's dog song video and have a sniff at some barking good dog blogs because today is a Pet Bloggers Hop!

Dog Song Saturday: Dog Gone Gone Dog Gone

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at For Love of a Dog!  Today's dog song is a simple, happy, catchy tune called Dog Gone Gone Dog Gone from the More Please! album from Caspar Babypants.  The song answers the age old question:  What does my dog do when he's gone?

Dog Gone Gone Dog Gone is accompanied by an equally simple fan video of a puppy chasing a tennis ball in the snow.  The video was shot in Finland by Oskari Olli and stars his girlfriend's dog, Zero.  It's shot with a silent film affect, ala Charlie Chaplin, and is really cute.

So, here's the drill.  Grab a dog.  Sit.  Stay.  Snuggle with that dog.  Relax and enjoy Dog Gone Gone Dog Gone.  Sing along! You can scroll down below the video for the lyrics. When this song is over, fetch more dog songs at Talking Dogs.   And be sure to check out the barking good dog blogs listed below because today is a Pet Bloggers Hop!

Lyrics to DOG GONE GONE DOG GONE

Where is my dog when hes gone?
He's dog gone gone dog gone
When he gets back to our cozy little shack
Its doggie where you been so long?

Is he gambling all his kibble up in Memphis?
or living on a riverboat for free?
I wish that I could tell
why he comes home with that smell
my dog should never go get gone from me

One time he came home with diamonds
one time he came home with fleas
next time he comes back
I wish he'd bring a stack
of hot blueberry pancakes for me

Is he driving a truck in New York City?
Or peddling a bike across the plains?
Someday I might see
why my doggie does leave me
I'm listenin' for barks out in the rain

Is he courting a poodle in Los Angeles?
or dodging trouble in Bombay?
I ask him for excuses
I get stories about gooses
I hope he'll settle down with me someday
