Apple and Peanut Butter Dog Cookie Treat Recipe | Tasty Tuesday

As part of Jeffie's birthday celebration last week, we tried a new dog cookie recipe.  To say it was a hit is putting it mildly.

All of our dogs love peanut butter, especially Jeffie.  Since every dog cake recipe we looked at included things he really doesn't like (bananas, carrots and more - he's very picky) this seemed perfect.

This is a very easy recipe and I know we'll be making it again.  This time around we had a lot of fun with our cookie cutters to make them festive for our birthday boy.

Apple and Peanut Butter Dog Treats
4 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cup quick cooking oats
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup all natural unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup all natural peanut butter (no sugar or salt added)
1 1/2 cups water
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 egg
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine all ingredients and mix well.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface until it is firm.
  4. Roll dough to 1/4" thickness.  Cut with cookie cutters.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes.  Turn off the heat and let cookies stand in the oven until hard (about 1-2 hours)
Lip smackin' good!

Easy Cranberry Dog Biscuit Recipe | Tasty Tuesday

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie received a special Christmas gift this year from their friend Kristi and her pack of 8 special dogs:  a goodie bag filled with several different kind of dog treats they'd baked themselves.

Of course, I had to get the recipes.

I'm sharing just one of the delicious (so say my pack) recipes today in honor of one of Kristi's dogs, Belvedere, Gotcha Day.  Belvie was pulled for rescue from the Pulaski County Humane Society in Dublin, VA, on January 21, 2012.  He was supposed to be just a two week foster, but he decided he was home.  Good decision, Belvie!

Easy Cranberry Dog Biscuits

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 beaten eggs
1 cups chopped fresh cranberries
1/2 cup applesauce

Using a food processor with the dough blade, mix the eggs, applesauce and cranberries.  Add the flour.

Knead the dough and roll out to about 1/4" thickness and cut into shapes.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.  If you want a harder treat, turn off the oven and leave the cookies in to dry overnight or for a few hours.

Note: the stores were already out of cranberries, so we re-hydrated some dried cranberries. In fact, I'm planning to try this with some dried cherries I have on hand.  Blueberries would be good, too.

Wordless Wednesday: Dog Cookies!

One cookie left for Lucy... who hid under the table as soon as she saw the camera.  Rudy and Jeffie could care less about the camera when there's cheese involved.  These dog treats are a favorite at our house.  Fetch our Cheese Dog Biscuit recipe and let your furry friends give them a try.

Dog Lover Christmas Cookie Cutters from Fancy Flours

Photo: Fancy Flours
I was surfing around on the web this weekend to do some Christmas shopping and stumbled on some incredible dog breed cookies.  They were a bit pricey for my budget, so I couldn't resist trying to find some cookie cutters to make my own.

That's how I discovered Fancy Flours.  As I explored their web site I couldn't help but think my face probably looked a lot like Lucy's at her begging best.  I refuse to disclose whether or not I drooled.  However, I have to say the dog lover cookie cutters at Fancy Flours are barking good!

Do they have all dog breeds?  No.  However, what they do have are pretty dog-gone cool: Scottish Terrier, Poodle, Greyhound,  Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Bull Dog, Corgi, Chihuahua, Dachshund, St Bernard dogs.  Plus they have paw prints, fire hydrants and the old standby dog bone.  Checkout the Corgi cookie cutter, the Dachshund cookie cutter, and the Golden Retriever cookie cutter:

Best of all for my gift shopping, they have a Cookie Cutter Dog Lovers Set of 17 cookie cutters that include:  Collie, Greyhound, Schnauzer, Irish Setter, Terrier, French Poodle, Dachshund, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever.  The set also includes 3 sizes of dog bones, small puppy, heart, fire hydrant, dog house and paw print! These cookie cutters are made of annodized aluminum and two recipes are included.

Hmmm... would it be terribly rude if we made dog treats with these cookie cutters?   Somehow I don't think Lucy, Jeffie or Rudy would object to snarfing down, say, a Chihuahua...   Bone appetit!

Dog Treats Recipe: Banana & Peanut Butter

Lucy patiently waiting...
Lucy has a new favorite dog treat.  It combines two of her favorite tastes:  bananas and peanut butter.  Probably the only thing that would make it better is if it had cheese!    Actually, Lucy and Rudy are not picky eaters.  They'll eat almost anything.  However, both really love bananas.

This recipe is quick, healthy and easy to make substitutions depending on what you have handy in the kitchen.   It has a bit of a plus with the addition of parsley for fresh breathe.

We snatched this recipe from our Newsbite from Modern Dog Magazine.   You can fetch more dog treat recipes from Talking Dogs here.  Bone appetite!

Banana & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
1 banana, peeled

1 cup oat flour (we substituted whole wheat flour)
2/3 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup dried parsley
3 tablespoons peanut butter
1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.  Smash/mash the banana in a mixing bowl.  Add the other ingredients and mix well.  Set aside for about 5 minutes.  Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each.  Place each ball on a large parchment paper-lined baking sheet.  Use a spoon to press each ball into a 1 1/2" to 2" flat coin.  Bake until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom - approximately 40 - 45 minutes.

Wordless Wednesday: Dog Cookie Voyeur

Are you gonna eat all of that dog cookie?
I know its Wordless Wednesday, but ... please know that Tucker is not growling at Rudy over the dog biscuit.  He's chewing!  Though Rudy may step in when the cookie is gone (to sniff out crumbs) he never challenges Tucker, Lucy or Jeffie over food or toys.  He's simply a voyeur.

Carob Dog Treats Recipe from For Love of a Dog Jewelry

I confess.  I'm a chocolaholic.  And yes, I do feel bad when I enjoy a chocolate treat in front of my canine companions.  They feel bad, too, and are exellent beggers.  So now they have their own version of chocolate yumminess in these Carob Dog Treats:

3 cups whole wheat flower
1/2 cup wheat germ
2 1/2 cups oatmeal
1/8 cup peanut oil
1/8 cup corn oil margarine
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 oz carob chips, melted
1/4 cup molasses
1 cup water
1/2 cup powdered milk

Mix all the dry ingredients in your bowl.  Add the remaining ingredients and stir until blended well.  This dough will be stiff.  Chill for at least 1/2 hour.  Roll dough and cut with cookie cutters or however you please.  I usually just cut the dough into squares 1/2 inch thick.  Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour.  Makes 2 to 3 dozen depending on the size treats you cut.

Cheese Dog Biscuit Recipe from For Love of a Dog Jewelry

Lucy and Jeffie begging for cheese.
My dogs are cheese hounds.  Big time cheese hounds.  They can hear us getting the cheese from the frig even when they're outside in the yard.  It's probably a fabulous psychic talent or something.  For sure they are wild about these Cheese Dog Biscuits, so here's the recipe:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound corn oil margerine
1 clove garlic - crushed
Pinch of salt
Milk
Grate the cheese and let is stand until room temperature.  Then cream the cheese with the softened margerine, garlic, salt and flour.  Add just enough milk to form a ball.  Chill for at least 30 minutes.  Roll out onto a floured surface and cut into shapes.  Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly brown and firm.  Makes 2-3 dozen depending on the size of your cookie cutter.

Here at For Love of a Dog Jewelry these dog treats do not last long!

The Dog Vote

Woof! Have you seen this very cool site about the dog vote? Great blog posts all about how the coming election is all up to us furry four paws! They even have an interactive map of the United States that shows who's leading in each state. Now this puts some weight behind my Squidoo poll about Elephant and Donkey dog cookies! And if you haven't added your 2 cents, yet, I'd appreciate it. So far Jeffie and people cookies are winning :-(

And I thought I was old...

Get this! Milk-Bone turns 100 years old this year. That's 700 in dog years! To celebrate, Milk-Bone is going to donate a million dollars to a dog charity and they're holding a national contest for a spokes-dog! More info here Though I admit that I just don't like the green ones, I think I'd make a terrific spokes-dog for them, don't you?

Tucker's Favorite Dog Cookies

Woooof... it smells good in here! Mama and the goldies (Lucy and Jeffie) are in the kitchen making dog cookies! Mama makes different ones, but these are my favorite. While they're baking I thought I'd share the recipe with you.

Tucker's Favorite Dog Cookies
1 package active dry yeast dissolved in 1/2 cup lukewarm (110-115 degree) water
1 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons molasses
1 3/4 to 2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup cracked wheat
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
Combine the following to brush tops before baking: 1 beaten egg PLUS 1 tablespoon milk
In a bowl, combine 1 cup of the all-purpose flour, the whole wheat flour, cracked wheat, cornmeal, dry milk powder and salt. Mix well. Then add yeast/water mix, molasses and broth. On a floured surface knead in enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough. Roll out dough to cut into biscuits with a doggie cookie cutter. Place on un-greased baking sheets. Brush tops. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Turn oven off and leave in oven overnight. Makes 36-40 dog cookies.
