I've Got a Dog with Dwight Yoakam | Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  The song I've Got a Dog was written and produced by Sandra Boynton and performed by Dwight Yoakam on Boynton's album Frog Trouble.

This official music video was created by Boynton using 97 photos of some great dogs, chosen from hundreds of photos submitted to her by their owners.  If you watch closely, you'll see a fleeting cameo appearance by Dwight Yoakam.

Old Dogs: Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  We're celebrating Senior Pets month along with the Blog Paws community with today's selection.  

Old Dogs by Larry Garrett is an original dog song.  Larry wrote the song several years ago about his family's dogs.  Old Dogs is dedicated to Charla the English Bulldog, Derek the Standard Schnauzer; Bluto the Bull Terrier, Mickey the West Highland Terrier, and Darla the Bantam Bulldog.  

You'll see all of his dogs in the music video that accompanies his song.

Dog Song Saturday: Our Lab Tribute

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Since we began sharing dog song music videos years ago, we've had a very wide variety of featured videos.  Sad, happy, fun, educational, famous composers and performers, and more.  My personal favorites remain:  original songs about dogs.

I believe I've got a great one for your today.  Our Lab Dog Tribute Memorial is a video put together by David Grey for his black Labrador Retriever.  Booboo passed away earlier this year and David composed this song on the ukulele as a tribute to her.  He notes:  "She was everything to us and she will be dearly missed."

Dog Song Saturday: Cracker Jack by Dolly Parton

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Though there's no cute dog video today, I think you'll enjoy this song.  

Cracker Jack is an original dog song composed by Dolly Parton.  It tells the story of her own childhood puppy dog, Cracker Jack.  I love this line:  "He wasn't much to look at, but he looked alright to me."

This video is Dolly performing the song on The Dolly Show in 1976.  Here are the song lyrics:

It's Saturday, so I know you're expecting a dog song at Talking Dogs.  However, sometimes we can't resist featuring a really good song about another member of the animal kingdom.  And this is one of those days.

Today's selection is the official music video for Girls and Horses written and performed by Templeton Thompson.  Debuted at Breyerfest 2009, Girls and Horses displays Templeton's true love for equine and speaks to the soul of every woman who ever loved a horse.

I'm dedicating today's song and music video to my first horse, Miss Vicky, and to my heart horse, Lady, and all the girls out there who've felt the joy and magic.

Martha My Dear: Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday.  Time for a dog song at Talking Dogs!  Love the Beatles?  Old English Sheepdogs?  Then we've got a treat for you.

Did you know Paul McCartney wrote a dog song?  Martha My Dear was written for Paul's beloved Old English Sheepdog, Martha.  You'll find Martha My Dear on the 1968 Beatles White Album and available on iTunes.

The video that accompanies the song here contains some charming vintage photos of Paul and Martha together. 

McCartney got Martha as a puppy in 1965 and she was his first pet.  In the book Many Years From Now by Barry Miles, McCartney is quoted as saying:

"She was a dear pet of mine. I remember John being amazed to see me being so loving to an animal. He said, 'I've never seen you like that before.' I've since thought, you know, he wouldn't have. It's only when you're cuddling around with a dog that you're in that mode, and she was a very cuddly dog."

Some have said that this song is about his relationship with Jane Asher.  However, in 1997, McCartney said it was his dog, Martha, who inspired this song.

"It's a communication of some sort of affection but in a slightly abstract way - 'You silly girl, look what you've done,' all that sort of stuff. These songs grow. Whereas it would appear to anybody else to be a song to a girl called Martha, it's actually a dog, and our relationship was platonic, believe me."

If you've followed this blog for long, or are a fan of For Love of a Dog jewelry, you know that I love horses.  So, you won't be surprised that I simply could not resist sharing this video.

The song Cowboys and Rodeos is performed here by Colleen Peterson.  The video it accompanies features mares and their foals and was filmed by singer/songwriter Nancy Simmonds.  You'll see Appaloosas, Arabians, miniature horses and foals... lots of foals.

Ugly Dogs Need More Love comes to us from our friend Skip Haynes at Pet CDs and is an original dog song music video celebrating shelter dogs.  All the dogs in this video are shelter dogs who were rescued and adopted into forever homes.  

Personally, I didn't see an ugly dog among the bunch and I was glad to see that the song credits state:  There are no ugly dogs!
