Remembering An Old Friend Dog Tribute - Throwback Thursday at Talking Dogs

My friend, Jodi, at Heart Like a Dog blog has been sharing some of her ~~old~~ past blog posts for Throwback Thursday and I love it so much! In fact, it has inspired me to revisit some of my own old blog posts and share some of them with you.

Talking Dogs has been around since 2007. Today I want to share with you my all time most popular blog post with 76,498 views. Ironically, this is a post that I did not write, but a guest post from the Dog Daddy.

Without further ado, here's Remembering An Old Friend, originally published on January 13, 2012.

Today we have a Talking Dogs guest post from the dog daddy at our house, known to some of you as the Chief Medical Examiner and my husband, Gary.

Remembering an old friend...

Having recently lost Tucker, my old friend of 14 years, I have been thinking a lot about him.

A few weeks ago, while stringing lights on the Christmas tree, I was remembering one of the last walks we took together.

We have a fenced back yard of about two acres which the dogs have access to. However they all love to go for a walk outside of the yard with their daddy.

Nobody loved the walks more than Tucker. The last few years of his life he was suffering with arthritis and got to the point where he had trouble standing up, but once he was on his feet he was always ready to go for a walk.

I regret terribly that we didn’t take more walks. Once we were out the front door Tucker was on the move. Slow and steady but moving ahead. Regardless of how long the walk lasted or how tired he was, he never once asked to go back to the house. When I would tire out and start back, he would always want to go for more.

On one of those last walks together Tucker scared up a rabbit. I saw it lying in the grass long before Tucker did so I steered him toward it.

Now, to help you get the image, it helps to visualize a 98 year old man who needs a walker to get around. Although Tucker didn’t have a walker (he could have used one) he walked very slow and deliberate as he made sure each step was secure.

When Tucker got about 6 feet from the rabbit it bolted and ran. Tucker came alive and gave chase. Well at least until he got to the end of the leash and I stopped him. He watched as the rabbit hopped off and into the high grass and was gone.

In hindsight I wish I would have let him go. One last good chase. It’s not as if he would have caught the rabbit or even got close but he would have loved to try, and I know he would not have gone too far in his condition.

But it’s too late now and it makes me sad that my basic instinct to keep control of him deprived him of that good chase. I should add that we were about in the middle of our 46 acres so he would have had plenty of room to safely chase the rabbit.

You see, for years one of Tuckers jobs around here was to keep the yard clear of all invading critters, rabbits, armadillos, squirrels. He had retired from that job and had turned it over to the young and swift.

But when Tucker saw that rabbit he was young again. Age nor ability was not a thought.

I wish I had let him go.

Hey there! I'm Suzie, an adorable, Retriever/Lab mix, weighing about 48 pounds and looking for a place to call my own. I was transferred here when my last shelter ran out of space for me. I was pretty bummed but now I see that here I have the best chance at meeting the right peeps for me. I may do best as the queen of my castle when it comes to other animals but I'll do grr-eat with children.

I have a lot of energy to spare and will need a home where I can stay active! I love to get out and explore the world on walks and the peeps here say I do pretty well sticking right by your side on my leash instead of pulling ahead. I'm a beautiful retriever, lab mix who weighs about 57 pounds. I'm big in size and in heart! I have a moderate energy level but because of my size I'll still need daily physical activity. I like to explore the world and will love going on long walks with you. Adopt Bubba 6 Year Old Black #LabradorRetriever @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This beautiful boy is Bubba. He's a 6 year old black Labrador Retriever. As he explains in his adoption message, he's got a couple of issues. At 92 pounds he's a bit overweight and needs a new best friend to help him slim down. He also has what is probably a partial tendon tear in his left hind leg. That will mean some veterinary care.

Here's Bubba's story:

Hi there, it's Bubba here. What do you think of when you hear the name "Bubba?" I hope it's a big, loveable, happy-go-lucky black lab, because that's me! I'm 6 years old and weigh 92 pounds....I need to lose weight, but I swear some of that weight is all the love I have inside me! I crave attention from people, and I've heard it said that I have an all-around great personality. What more could you wish for?

When I arrived at Wayside Waifs, the first thing they noticed (other than my splendid looks and personality) is that I have a problem with my left hind leg. I limp, and the vets are pretty sure it's a partial tear of a tendon. It may not get any worse, especially if I'm careful and not rambunctious. That's where you come in. I have a lot of energy, and I need my person to make sure I don't over-do my exercise. Gentle walks would be wonderful, but no jogging or leaping. Don't get me wrong...I'm still up for fun and games. Swimming might be something I'd like to try as I love the baby pool in the park. I've also had fun hanging out with another dog here, but no rough play. Exercise that will help me burn up some energy in ways that don't further injure my leg is the way to go.

To be truthful, I really love attention and affection from humans. I think I'd be content just living in a home with someone who adores me, pets me, gives me belly rubs, and appreciates my goofy and loveable personality. The vet may want me to be on anti-inflammatory medicine. Together, we'll have to check that out. Oh, and because I'm overweight, I'll need you to oversee a diet for me which would lighten the strain on my leg. That's not real appealing as I do love my food, but if it keeps me healthy, I'm in! I know we'll both want to be vigilant in order to avoid me needing any corrective surgery, right?

So you see...I'm looking for someone pretty special to see to my needs. Why not? I'm a pretty special dog! I'm full of life and have a lot of good living ahead of me. I know how to "sit" and "come" and I'm motivated by toys, praise and of course food. That means it'll be easy for me to learn more commands and basic obedience. That would be fun for both of us and provide me with mental games to re-direct my energy. I love to go for walks and it'd be great if you'd use a harness or halter to help me learn not to pull. I am mostly house trained and have not had any accidents in my kennel. Once I'm at home with you, a refresher course on that might be on your to-do list.

So here I am...a big bundle of love just waiting for you! When you come to see me, please bring all family members, including any furry ones, so we can make sure we all get along. Also, I should go to a home with kids older than 5, who can understand the rules about my activities and help make sure I don't romp around like crazy. I'm really hoping that you are my special match, and I can be your perfect companion. Come see me soon...I can't wait to start the rest of my life with you!

Adopt Maddie a 6 Year Old Black #LabradorRetriever at @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

Here we go again. Another dog surrendered to a shelter because the owners had a human baby. Maddie was originally adopted as a puppy from Wayside Waifs. Her owners had a new baby and things took a bad turn as that baby became a toddler. As Maddie shares in her adoption message, Maddie was sometimes scared of the toddler and the toddler was sometimes scared of Maddie.

In my opinion it could have been a learning experience for all involved. Instead Maddie was surrendered to Wayside Waifs where she's now hoping for a new family that will love her forever.

Maddie is a 6 year old black Labrador Retriever mix with a doggone beautiful grin. She's spayed, crate trained, walks nicely on a leash and knows lots of commands. She's also stressed and lonely at the shelter.

Hi, I'm Maddie! Yikes...I'm not really sure what I'm doing here. There must be some mistake. I'm a family dog who belongs in a home and gets a daily walk and is loved and cared for and spoiled. It was never part of my plan to be in a homeless shelter again. I barely remember the last time I was here. I was just a pup and was quickly adopted. So when I found myself back where it all started, well, I've been just a little anxious and unsure. I hope my new family finds me very soon!

I'm a beautiful, 6 year old, 50 pounds of pure love, already housetrained and crate trained, Labrador Retriever mix. I'm smart, affectionate, friendly, and I love people. I first came to Wayside as a wee pup, back in 2009, and I quickly found a new home and family that I adored. We've been together for the past 6 years now and my life has been pretty wonderful. My family had a baby a couple years ago though, and now that she's a toddler, sometimes she scares me. And sometimes I scare her. I'm a perfect dog in so many ways, but every once in a while, I get protective of my special treats and I don't want anyone near them. My little toddler friend doesn't understand that. So my family decided to bring me back to Wayside, hoping I'll find a new family that is a perfect match for me. I miss them very much and I imagine they miss me too, but sometimes things are out of my control, so I have no choice but to carry on and keep looking forward. Luckily, I am a resilient dog with so much to offer, so I hope to not be homeless for long.

My previous family had so many great things to say about me! When they were gone, sometimes they'd put me in my crate and I did just fine there. I loved going for a daily walk or run, playing and goofing off in the backyard, taking an occasional trip to the dog park, and munching on my favorite treats. I did just great in the backyard, with a 6 foot wooden fence. In our old house though, there was a chain link fence that I'd sometimes climb over, if I got bored and was left out alone too long. Funny thing is, once I got over the fence, I'd just walk to the front door, asking to get let back in. I'll need you to keep an eye on me when I'm outside, and make sure I stay safe and secure in my yard. When we had company, I'd greet them with a friendly welcome. I was smart and eager to learn and I know all sorts of commands, including sit, stay, come, down, heel, and off. I'm a quick learner and I love to make you happy, so training me is easy and fun. I walk perfectly on my leash and I'm relaxed and calm during car rides.

In my last home, I lived with another dog and we did just fine together most of the time. On rare occasion, we'd get in arguments about food or special treats. Our mom fed us separately and that typically worked out just fine for us. Since I can be serious about my food though, I hope you will feed me in a quiet and safe place, where no one will bother me. And I'd like to meet the whole family, including any other dogs you have, before we go home together. I also want to meet all the kids in the family and I think I'll be happiest with kids over the age of at least 10.

I'm feeling sort of stressed and lonely at the shelter. I don't mean to complain or cause any trouble though. I'm grateful that I have a second chance in life. I'm grateful that my life so far has been filled with love and fun. I know what it means to be a beloved member of a family. And I know how to give unconditional love to you. I can't wait to show you what an incredible dog I am! Please come out to meet me very soon. My kennel seems so lonely and I can't wait to have a home again.

Adopt Lucky a Black #LabradorRetriever Dog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This sweet girl is Lucky. She's a 3 1/2 year old Labrador Retriever mix. At 65 pounds she's a big girl. Athletic, playful and already housebroken, Lucky would love to be your best friend.

Hi, I'm Lucky! And oh boy, lucky is how I've felt my whole entire life, at least until I became homeless. And I suppose I'm still lucky, because being at Wayside gives me the chance to find you and start the next chapter of my life. It's sort of exciting in a way, thinking about you and waiting for you and wondering what day you'll be able to come for me. I am a smart, friendly, social, fun dog who never has a bad day and appreciates every moment of life. I have a delightful personality and I love pretty much everyone I meet.

I am a beautiful, 3 ½ year old, 65 pound, already housetrained, Labrador Retriever mix. I'm athletic and playful and an overall wonderful companion. I came to Wayside when my previous owner could no longer take care of me. We had been together since I was a puppy and we loved each other very much. But things in his life changed and he wasn't able to take me along for the ride. I was sad, that's for sure, when I realized our time together was ending, but I'm trying my best to understand. I've learned that sometimes life doesn't happen exactly like you had planned. Sometimes things are out of your control. And sometimes you just have to get up in the morning and hope it's a good day. A good day for me will be the day you find me and welcome me into your family!

My dad had so many great things to say about me! I was very well behaved in my home. I was crate trained as a puppy and did just fine with that. When I got older, I didn't need the crate any longer, and I did just great in my home. Before my dad left home, he'd make sure I went to the bathroom, so that I didn't have any accidents while he was away. He said I could hold it for about 6-8 hours, although I'd much rather have you around more often. I'm a people dog and I love to be by your side. I was an indoor dog, except when I went out to run and play. I hope to have a fenced in yard in my new home, because I love to play fetch and run around and act goofy. I also enjoy going for a daily walk or a run. I do pretty well on my leash, but a harness works too, if I pull too much for you.

In my last home, I got along really well with everyone...including all the adults, kids of all ages, visitors, the other dog in my home, and even the family cat! Still, I'd like to meet the whole family, to make sure we're all a good fit for one another. And I'd like a home without any small, furry animals, such as bunnies. With other dogs, I like to control things and sometimes I'm bossy. The dog I used to live with was fine with that, but not all dogs will appreciate my style. I'd be perfectly happy being your only dog as well, of course! And sometimes I can be jumpy with people. I'm working on that though, and I'm a smart gal, so you can teach me not to do this! Please be consistent with me and teach me in a positive way what you expect from me. I already know lots of commands, including sit, stay, come, shake, fetch, and rollover. My dad invested lots of time training me and I'm a beautifully behaved dog!

I hope you will be dedicated and committed to me. I have lots of energy, so I will need exercise every day. I'm not the sort of dog who will be happy left alone in my crate for long days. I want to live and experience all life has to offer and go on an occasional adventure with you. I want to be your devoted companion. I want to proudly walk through our neighborhood with you and meet everyone and let them all pet me. I want to make your life happier and brighter, just by having me in it. I don't plan to be here at the shelter for long, so I hope you will come for me soon!

Adopt Dollar a Pitbull Shepherd Dog @WaysideWaifs in KCMO

This big beautiful boy is Dollar. Though he may look like a big Lab mix, Dollar has had DNA testing and he is a German Shepherd / American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He's four years old, weighs 78 pounds and is mostly housebroken.

Dollar's story really pinged my heartstrings. Though no fault of his own, he's kind of been caught in a revolving door at Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City, Missouri.

First adopted from Wayside when he was 6 months old, that family broke apart and Dollar found himself back at the shelter. Adopted again a few years ago, Dollar was surrendered to Wayside when his boy left for collage and the family no longer wanted him.

I'll let Dollar tell you the rest of his story:

Hi there, I'm Dollar! I roll with the flow and try my best never to let anything get me down. I am a survivor and a lover and a simple dog who just wants to be part of a family. I get confused though, thinking back on my life and how it might have been different. Why has the love of a forever family been so elusive for me? I'm back at Wayside now, and this time around, I will finally find the home and family that I so deserve. I hope it's with you. I hope we find each other and realize we were meant to be together all along. I believe there is a reason I'm here, and it is so that I can finally find you.

I am a handsome and fun, 4 year old, 78 pound, mostly housetrained, German Shepherd/American Staffordshire Terrier mix. My breeds are a wonderful combination of loyalty, devotion, strength, and smarts. I even had a DNA test done a couple years ago, so I guess I'm sort of official, even though some of my friends insist I look more like a big ol' Black Lab! And in all honesty, I'm just a simple, sweet dog who is smart, affectionate, and happy, regardless of my breed and despite all the struggles I've had in my life. I just want to love and be loved. While I don't like to dwell on my past, I think it's important to share my full story with you, so here goes.

I first came to Wayside as a stray when I was just a 6 month old pup. There were some leads about who I belonged to, but I had already been passed around in my short life and no one seemed to want me, so I was put up for adoption. I did find a new home and things went ok for a while. But then my family life fell apart. There was a break up and I was caught in the middle. At just 2 years old, I found myself back out on the streets, alone and scared. I eventually made my way back to Wayside, where I spent about 5 months making friends and entertaining the volunteers. Then one day, I got adopted! I had a boy all my own and he loved me. Life was good...until he went away to college and the rest of the family didn't really want me. Once again, I was the odd man out.

I was with that family for about a year and a half, but now I find myself back at Wayside yet again. I've been busy reuniting and catching up with all my old volunteer pals. I see that they feel sad for me, so I try to cheer them up, letting them know that I'm ok and that I'll get through this! They just don't realize that I'm here waiting for you, so I'm good. I know you'll find me when the time is right. And I will appreciate you and feel grateful to you and make you feel special, every single day, for the rest of my life.

I hope you can be dedicated and committed to me. I've never had that in my life before, but it's something I really need. I will need daily exercise, to keep me fit, happy, and healthy. I need to lose a few pounds, but that will be easy to do with you by my side, exercising with me and giving me nutritious meals. Please be patient, consistent, and understanding with me, as I get acclimated to my new life with you. Since I'm smart and treat motivated, training me is easy and I already know several commands. It makes me happy to make you happy, so the sky is truly the limit with what I can learn. In fact, I've been working out at the agility park here at Wayside, and I'm a natural. I also love my toys so much.

Since I'm a rough and tumble sort of dog, with strength that I don't always fully realize, I think I'll be happiest in a home without kids under the age of 5, please. And for now, I'd like to be your only animal. At some point in time, I might do just fine with other dogs, but for now, I want all of your attention and love. After a day of fun, I want nothing more than to cuddle and chill out with you. I'm super silly, sweet and affectionate. I hope you'll give me the time to show you what a lover I can be!

Sure I've had a rough life and sometimes it just doesn't seem fair. But I can handle it! I'm resilient and I have a fantastic, charming personality that never lets me down. Just when things look bleakest for me, someone steps in and makes a difference in my life. I'm so grateful and I've found that people are good way more often than bad. So I just need one more really good person (I'm thinking of you!) to do that for me...to make me family and promise to stick with me for the rest of my life. It happens for other dogs, why can't it happen for me? No reason, no reason at all. I just have to continue to be patient until you find me. I hope it's soon.
