Mischief Monday: Ducks, Geese and Dogs

If you asked the dogs, they'd say that there's plenty of mischief going on at our pond.  A flock of ducks flew in and have been having a high time swimming, splashing, and generally just doing what ducks do.  There are sometimes as many as 12, but usually 6-8 that spend their days here.  Nights, too, sometimes.

They've been joined by a pair of local wild geese.  This pair frequently visits us and we were surprised that they didn't mind the newcomers.

In fact, at first glance we first wondered if the geese had brought early goslings along with them.

Nope, those are the ducks peacefully swimming with the geese.

Rosie didn't know what to make of the whole situation and the strange gathering of critters.  She sought the safety of the deck, where she could just watch.

Rudy, onn the other hand, likes to get upfront and personal.  It drives him crazy that these fowl are soooo close and he couldn't get to them.  AND he was told not to bark.

"The ducks and geese are our friends, Rudy.  We like the them!"

Rudy never barked at them, but as you can see from his "full alert" stance, he sure wanted to.  Pretty sure he'd like nothing better than to chase them.

And what was the birthday boy, Jeffie, doing?  Just doop-dee-dooping around the yard.  Guess he thought they were just more birthday party guests!

We've received so many fabulous photos for Jeffie's Birthday Party Pet Photo Contest, that I'm going to share some today, plus announce the lucky winners in the Good Dog Take Outs dog treat giveaway!

  6. One time Kelly chased a duck from our camp down into the lake and swam after it...she swam so far, and wouldn't come back, that we had to go rescue her in a row boat!

  9. I'm honestly am not sure what the Newfs would do if they were that close to ducks. I would have to say they would at least bark a little.

  11. Bailey and Katy have an interesting relationship with the birds. The birds aren't really afraid of them, but every so often the dogs feel a need to make a show of it.

  12. Oh c'mon - one little chase will cure Rudy in a heartbeat. My ducks bite my dogs all the time and the dogs HATE it. I can only imagine what a goose would do.

  13. Great pictures, those look like blue wing teal. That is cheap entertainment for the dogs. My dogs would be chasing them and not coming out of the water. Great bday party pictures!

  14. Maybe let the dogs get the Canadian Geese as they are so mean and so messy, mom can't stand the sight of them anymore! They poop every sidewalk around full and it is nasty! Other than that, super cute birthday pics again :)

  15. We have Canada geese nesting in the meadow across the road - they squawk and flap their wings at us every time we walk by! We're looking forward to the goslings tough!

  18. Rudy is smart just to watch. We don't love geese that much anymore. We have TONS of them here and they are part of the reason that Dakota hates taking walks. A Mother Goose tried to attack him and he wasn't even that close to her babies!

  21. We would chase those ducks and geese! That would be so much fun!

  22. You have some great dogs there, neither one of mine would leave those ducks alone. I'm pretty sure they'd both be barking and running the fence line. :-)

  23. Good boy, Rudy, for not barking. Maybe you can help me teach that to Pierson. :)
