Adopt Azalea a Pit Bull Mixed Breed Dog at Wayside Waifs in Kansas City

This pretty girl is Azalea.  She a Terrier, American Staffordshire, Hound mixed breed dog at Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City, MO.

Azalea is only 22 months old and quite a beauty.  She found herself at Wayside Waifs after being picked up as a stray.  She must have had some very hard times on the street, because when she first arrived at the shelter she was very afraid of people.  She's come a long way in building her confidence and learning to trust again.

Here's Azalea's adoption message:
Hello there! My name is Azalea and I am a beautiful 1 and a half year old American Staffordshire Terrier/Hound. I came in to Wayside as a stray when animal control found me wandering the streets. It was hard not having a home to call my own at such a young age. I'm so thankful I ended up at Wayside. I have made so many good friends and for the first time in a long time, I finally feel safe. Everyone tells me this is the place where I will find my new family. I want to tell you a little about myself in the hopes that you might be the family for me!
When I first got to Wayside Waifs I was so scared. I didn't understand that people could be so kind and loving. The staff felt it was best for me to start working with a team of volunteers who work with shy and fearful dogs like me. I'm so glad I did, because I am like a different dog today! I wanted to so badly to be loved and for someone to notice what a good girl I was. I can't believe it, but they did! They worked with me slowly on how to trust again, and gave me an avenue where I could build up my confidence. One of my friends here started working with me on agility. I love learning how to do the course and she says I've gotten so good at it! She says that I complete everything in the agility course in the order I'm supposed to and how quickly I've picked up on things! It feels so good to hear such positive things about myself. It's a new feeling but a girl could definitely get used to it!
The staff thinks it is best if I go to a home with kids over 5 years old. Since it can still take me awhile to warm up, I think it's best for now. Even though I've come such a long way, it will be important to go slow with me when we first meet. Once I get to know you, I will show you my sweet and playful side! I love to cuddle and be close to you, it's how I show you the love I have for you. I really want to go home with someone who will help me get daily mental and physical stimulation. Going for walks and playing will help me to become a well-rounded dog! Since I'm still a young girl, I will most likely need work on housetraining and basic obedience. I want more than anything to make you happy so with positive reinforcement training and patience, I should learn quickly! What I need most is someone who will take a chance on me and show me how wonderful life really is. I've been through more in my short life than I care to admit, but it doesn't stop me from trying to live to the fullest!

If you are looking for a sweet and loyal companion, look no further! Come on out to Wayside Waifs and ask to meet Azalea. My bags are packed and I am ready to walk away from the shelter and into our new lives together, as a family.

All my love, Azalea

Adopt a Pit Bull Dog - National #DogFighting Awareness Day | Tuesdays Tails

The ASPCA has designated April 8 as National Dog Fighting Awareness Day to advance the conversation about dog fighting and to encourage animal lovers acress the country to take action against this brutal form of animal cruelty.

Dog fighting is defined by many as a "blood sport."  It is a felony in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  In addition, the US Animal Welfare Act makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly sell, buy, possess, train, transport, deliver or receive any dog for the purposes of having the dog participate in an animal fighting venture.

Although other breeds of dogs are used for dog fighting around the world, the American Pit Bull Terrier is the most popular in the US according to the ASPCA.  They estimate tens of thousands of people are involved in dog fighting.

Because of the cruelty involved, I can barely think about dog fighting, let alone write about it.  I've been featuring adoptable dogs on Talking Dogs blog every Sunday for 7 years now -many of them Pit Bulls - from primarily three shelters and rescues in Missouri.  Stray Rescue of St Louis is one of these.

Stray Rescue is very well acquainted with the victims of dog fighting.  In fact, because of their experience and success in medically and behaviorally rehabilitating dogs who have suffered severe trauma, last month they were one of the rescues chosen to take in seven dogs from a large dogfighting ring bust in Louisiana.  Aptly called, precious cargo, three scarred and injured males, plus an emaciated momma dog with three pups, arrived at Stray Rescue one month ago today.  Now they'll receive the second chance they deserve.

Stray Rescue currently has over 220 dogs available for adoption.  Many of them are Pit Bulls or Pitty mixes.
Reliable, partially deaf Pit Bull mix adoptable dog.

This handsome boy is Reliable.  He's a 40 pound Pit Bull mix dog and about 18 months old.  Reliable's rescuers found him sitting near a trash pile, obviously dumped there.  He was hungry, dirty, and looked like he was waiting for someone to come back for him.

After rescue, Reliable was found to be partially deaf, therefore he does need a little extra attention to make sure he knows what's going on and what is expected of him.

According to Stray Rescue shelter staff and volunteers:
Everybody who has met Reliable has fallen in love with him.  They all find him to be sweet, gorgeous, affectionate and eager to please.  He doesn't let his hearing hinder his activities.  Recently he has been on two five-mile hikes with his shelter buddies.  He loved every minute.  On the way to the hikes, he rode quietly in the back seat of the cars amusing himself with toys or looking out the window.  He was also known to sneak in a quick kiss for the driver.  Reliable was a great hiker who enjoyed smelling everything he could in nature.  He did very well on the leash, didn't tire on the hike, and didn't react to the other dogs around him.

As a young dog, Reliable is at the perfect age for training.  He loves people and willingly learns from them.  He will need some special training because of his hearing loss, but he has already shown that he is capable of living a good life even without perfect hearing.  Reliable is well loved at the shelter, and everyone wants him to have a very special home.  Could that home be yours?  Reliable is hoping so.
Check out Reliable's video and then contact Stray Rescue at 314-776-6121 for more information.

Stealth Quacker Invasion | Monday Mischief

When I noticed this pair of ducks on the creek behind our backyard, I tried to get a photo without the dogs catching on.   Rudy was out in the southeast corner trying to find our solo squirrel.  Jeffie was on perimeter patrol.   Rosie was sitting on the deck observing the boy dogs.

Until she spotted the waterfowl and raced to the backyard fence.  Though she didn't bark, the ducks took off.

Jeffie turned around to see what was going on, but missed the whole thing.

He was obviously not impressed with Rosie's skills.

Note:  There will be a very special Tuesday's Tails Blog Hop this next week to call attention to National Dog Fighting Awareness Day.  Please join us by featuring adoptable Pit Bull dogs, as well as writing about dog fighting on your blog.  For further information please check our Tuesday's Tails Facebook page.  If you are a member of Blog Paws, please follow the discussion here.
