October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month and I've devoted several blog posts to that subject. Here's another reason why you should adopt from a shelter or rescue as opposed to purchasing a canine from a pet shop. Puppy mills.
Yes, there are wonderful, caring, responsible breeders of dogs out there. However, there are other dog breeders whose operations come under the heading of puppy mills. To my shame, I live in Missouri, the puppy mill capital. More puppies in pet shops come from Missouri puppy mills than from any other state in our country.
Adding a puppy to your family? Don't shop - adopt. And if you live in Missouri, vote YES on Prop B.
