Celebrate Shelter Pets Day - The Shelter Pet Project

It's here - the Fifth Annual Celebrate Shelter Pets Day!

The Shelter Pet Project - a joint effort between The Ad Council, Maddie's Fund and the Humane Society of the United States - is a public service ad campaign focused on spreading the word that pets in shelters are amazing.

The goal:  to eliminate the stereotype that there's something wrong with shelter pets and to make shelters the first choice for people adding a pet to their family.

Today's the day you can help shelter pets take over Facebook and Twitter, too.  Spread the #ShelterPetLove with your Facebook posts and tweets.

Jeffie - adopted from an animal shelter
Almost all of my dogs and cats were adopted from an animal shelter.  The most recent:  Jeffie and Rosie.  In addition, Talking Dogs is a co-host of the Tuesday Tails pet blogger hop which promotes adoption of shelter pets.

Rosie - adopted from an animal shelter
I can personally testify that "rescued" doesn't not mean there's anything at all "wrong" with a pet. Most animals in shelters have ended up there through no fault of their own: their owners could no longer keep them (moving, change in family situations) or they have somehow gotten separated from their human family.

Some were “accidents” born to parents that weren’t neutered or spayed and became part of a situation where there were too many mouths to feed at home.  Shelters accept such animals in need and help to find them new, caring families.

If you’ve ever opened your heart to a shelter pet, your help is now needed to get the word out to other potential adopters.  On December 2, join the Celebrate Shelter Pets project on Facebook and Twitter with your personal story of how you met & fell in love with your adopted pet.

Be sure to include your pet’s name & history along with your favorite memories & silly stories.  Photos are great, too! Linking to the pages of your favorite animal shelter, Maddie’s Fund & The Shelter Pet Project are also great ways to help more pets find homes and loving families.

  2. What a great day. We love any day that raises awareness of all the pets in shelters needing homes. You are so right that there can be a stigma attached to them, yet they can make some of the most wonderful pets!

  4. Aside from my cat bro Bert, Mom has always had great luck with shelter pets...wabbits, cats, dogs. Nothing wrong with shelter pets in our opinion.

  5. I have had several secondhand pets and they have all been awesome! Theo is my first adult dog from a shelter and I don't know that I'll ever get a puppy again.
