Missouri Puppy Mill Ballot Initiative
A campaign is now underway in Missouri to collect signatures to place a historic measure on the November 2010 ballot. "Missourians for the Protection of Dogs" has been organized to promote a ballot initiative which will address the cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills.
Missouri is widely recognized as the "Puppy Mill Capital of the Nation" because of its far greater number of commercial dog breeding facilities than any other state. Every month, thousands of puppies from Missouri are shipped to pet stores throughout North America and beyond. In 1992, the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation led the effort to pass the Animal Care Facilities Act (ACFA) which established minimum standards of care and required annual inspections for commercial dog breeders.
This new proposed ballot measure would add new standards of canine care to the ACFA statute. Specifically the measure would require:
The ballot language has been approved by the Secretary of State, thus paving the way for the signature-gathering phase. Volunteers are needed immediately to collect enough signatures by April 27, 2010 to place this measure on the November ballot. Missourians would then have the opportunity to relieve the suffering of hundreds of thousands of dogs by voting YES on the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act on November 2, 2010.
If you live in Missouri, please help gather signatures from registered Missouri voters; spread the word to your family, friends and neighbors about this important initiative. Volunteer petitioners are needed immediately to collect more than130,000 signatures by April 27. If you would like to be a part of this historic effort, please contact the Alliance at mail@maal.org, 314-361-3944, or toll free at 877-444-6225

- Sufficient food and clean water
- Necessary venterinary care
- Sufficient housing, including protection from the elements and eliminating wire-floored cages
- Sufficient space for dogs to turn and stretch, lie down, and fully extend their limbs
- Regular exercise
- Adequate rest between breeding cycles

Colorado Dog Dragging - Petition for Maximum Penalty
Have you been following the story of Buddy, who was dragged to death in Colorado?
Two dogs were stolen from the back of a family's pick up truck while they were inside a restaurant. Max, a black lab, was returned to the family after Buddy's alleged murderer was arrested.
Steven Clay Romero, the man charged in the dragging death on December 30, 2009 of a German Shepherd named Buddy behind his truck for three miles faces the possibility of three years in federal prison, $100,000 fine and one year probation for this horrific crime. There is an online petition urging the US District Court in Grand Junction (Mesa County) Colorado to hand down the maximum sentence.
We've been following the story on OhMiDog and we've now signed the petition because we've had enough of animal cruelty. Join us.

Cat Rides Dog Rodeo Circus Act

My brother Jeffie likes cats. In particular, he likes our new cat Isabel. I can't explain it. I don't understand it. And now he's gone too far. He and Isabel are practicing for some kind of circus or rodeo act.
This is not a one time thing. Whenever Jeffie goes out, Isabel hops on board. She actually rides around the yard while Jeffie is on patrol. Now, as Head of Security, I have to say that I think this is totally unprofessional and I'm deeply offended by this behaviour. Afterall, cats are no good at security at all. I've tried talking to Jeffie about it, but he won't listen. Says it's a new year and I should get with it.
This all started one cold day when Mama made Jeffie wear his red sweater. Next we all knew, Isabel was climbing on board. To his credit, Jeffie did look a bit startled. We all thought it was hilariously funny and a fluke. Now whenever he goes out wearing his sweater or coat, there she is on his shoulders.
I get it that from Isabel's vantage point she should be able to alert us all to any danger, but come on! A cat is not even going to bother to tell us what she sees. By the way, our other cat, Skeeter, pretends that this is not happening. Like a good cat, she is above it all.
Woofing big time,

Happy New Year

Happy New Year
from all of us at For Love of a Dog Jewelry.
My Grandma Doffy says that whatever you do on New Years Eve and Day is what you'll be doing all year long. So far that's fine with me. I spent the evening last night power napping with snack breaks for cheese bits. I'll let you know later how today shapes up.
Woof! Woof! Tucker
