New Dog Fighting Legislation in Missouri

This legislative session in Missouri finds two new bills introduced regarding dog fighting which the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation supports.

Senators Scott Rupp and Jane Cunningham have filed dog fighting legislation, SB 664 and SB 632, respectively. Both bills were referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee but no hearings have been scheduled. These bills would require a disposition hearing within 30 days of impounded fighting dogs to determine what happens to the dogs that are seized. Currently, these dogs can endure many months or even years of impoundment pending the court matter. Additionally, the bills would increase the penalty from a misdemeanor to a felony for the second offense of being a spectator at a dog fight.
