Americans have recognized the first Monday in September as Labor Day since 1882. Labor Day was established to honor the American labor movement and we celebrate it to honor the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.
While all of us here at Talking Dogs and For Love of a Dog wish to recognize America's human workers, we can help but feel canine workers should be included in the celebration, too.
Dogs perform many tasks and serve in many different roles as working dogs: service and assistance dogs, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, herding and hunting dogs, war dogs or K9 Corps members, police and tracking dogs, and so much more.

ReplyDeleteMy grandpa, who is a wheelchair, had a service dog who was specially trained to help him around the farm. Her name was Belle and she would pick objects up off the ground if he dropped them. Would help him open the barn doors. And one time he fell out of his wheelchair and she went to get help!
