She Loves My Dog More Than Me by Freebo | Dog Song Saturday

Another Saturday and yet another dog song here at Talking Dogs.  Today we've got another barking good original tune.

She Loves My Dog More Than Me was composed by Freebo, a Folk Rock Blues icon and an award winning singer/songwriter.  You may know him from his bass playing for Bonnie Raitt.  This particular song debuted on Freebo's Something To Believe album which released in 2011.

She Loves My Dog More Than Me is performed here by Freebo (lead bocal, acoustic guitar, fretless bass, harmony and vocals), Mark Goldenberg (electric guitar), Shane Fontayne (electric guitar), Skip Edwards (electric piano), Peter Bunetta (drums) and Lee Thornburg (trumpets.)
I love my dog,
And she loves my dog,
But she loves my dog
More than me.

SHE LOVES MY DOG MORE THAN ME lyrics  ©Freebo, Bassline Music (BMI) Harold Payne, Harold Payne Music(BMI)
Once upon a time,
Everything was so fine,
Cozy just my baby and me.
I was so well fed,
Had my breakfast in bed,
I was happy as a man can be.
Then my buddy called up,
Had the cutest little pup,
I couldn’t help but take him in.
Little did I know
Her affection would go
To my new little four legged friend.

CHORUS:
Now she loves my dog
More than me.
She loves my dog
More than me.
I love my dog,
And she loves my dog,
But she loves my dog
More than me.

We were lyin’ by the fire,
Burnin’ with desire,
When suddenly, to my chagrin,
As the fire got to stokin’,
Came a cold nose a pokin’,
Somewhere it should not have been.
I thought she’d shoo him away,
But she told him stay,
It kind o’ took me out of the zone.
Now a man’s best friend
Gets the girl in the end,
And I’m left holdin’ the bone.

CHORUS:

So I’m sittin’ here  fumin’
While he’s getting’ all the groomin’,
That ain’t how it’s supposed to be.
Well you know I don’t hate ‘em,
But I’ve got an ultimatum;
Baby, it’s the dog or me!
Well I got her reply
As she led me outside,
And she handed me my People Chow.
Now I’m howlin’ at the moon
While he’s up in my room,
And I’m in the Doghouse now.

CHORUS:
There’s a moral to the story:
When you fall from glory,
You gotta do it gracefully.
So I’m back in the bed,
With the dog at the head,
We’re a Nuclear Family.
And I accept my fate,
And there’s little debate,
‘Cause this ain’t no democracy.
From the moment he came,
it’s been a doggone shame….
That she loves my dog
More than me.
CHORUS

I like my dog better than you
He doesn’t tell me what to do
Lets me wear the same shirt twice in a row
And leave my clothes all over the floor

I like my dog. He’s got a big wet nose
Doesn’t blow my money on fancy clothes
Never calls my cell ten times in a row
I like him better than you

Chasin’ my tail all over town
Wishin’ you were around
Grab the leash. Can’t you at least
Give me another try

I like my dog. He a good ‘ol pup
He puts the seat down if I leave it up
Lets me talk about my mother-in-law

I like him better than you

Man, I love my dog. Man, I love my dog
Oh, I love my dog. Oh I love my dog
Man, I love my dog. Man I love my dog
Oh, I love my dog. Oh, I love my dog

Now I hold the clicker when I watch TV
The dog and I don’t bicker ‘bout what to see
Lets me eat my dinner right outta the can
Wipe my face with the back of my hand, yeah

I love my dog. He likes to ride in the car
Never says a word about where we are
Lets me pick the songs on the radio

I like him better than you

I’m chasing my tail all over town
Wishin’ you were around
Grab the leash. Can’t you at least
Give me another try

Come on, boys
I like my dog better than you
He doesn’t tell me what to do
Lets me wear the same shirt twice in a row
I like him better than you!
Ooh waa ooh

Rudy the Turtle Retriever

This is the face of a turtle retriever.

Yep.  Rudy becomes obsessed with turtles every spring when they're on the move.  Not only does he patrol our fenced in backyard for them, he seems to have a sixth sense when one is near.

He could be in what looks like a dead sleep, then suddenly leap to his feet and run to the door.

Sure enough... just moments later I hear the telltale thunk of another turtle being dropped onto the deck.

You see, he retrieves them.  Brings them to the door and waits for someone to come get them and carry them out of the yard.

We average a turtle a day.  Once in awhile - no turtles. However, some days we may have 3 or 4.  Most are box turtles like this one.

The other day Rudy managed to find a huge snapper.  No, he didn't retrieve it.  He woofed twice.  Since Rudy hardly ever barks, I came running.  A little work with a shovel and that mean snapper was out of the yard and on his way.

You might be wondering if Rosie retrieves turtles, too.  Nope.  In fact, Rosie isn't interested in them at all.   Must be one of those boy things...  or maybe she's waiting until we have some turtle soup!

Celebrating Jeffie with Bad Romance Art Print by Angela Bond

Bad Romance ©Angela Bond ..

About five years ago there was a big to-do in the media about some studies claiming it was unhealthy for dogs to sleep in the bed with their humans.

Bruno Chomel, a professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, said that, while such cases aren’t common, people have contracted infections from sleeping with, kissing and being licked by their pets. Chomel and fellow researcher Ben Sun, of the California Department of Public Health, expressed their views in an issue of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Since then there have been other studies, editorials, blog posts and social media discussions about this issue.

When I first read about Chomel's comments on John Woestendiek's ohmidog blog I pretty much just felt pity for Professor Chomel.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that he had never enjoyed the true delight of a canine companion.  In fact, I still suspect that no dog ever wanted to share a bed with him and he was stuck in some kind of misery loves company scenario and just wanted to deprive the rest of us.

At that time (2011) we had four dogs.  We always had at least one of them sleeping in the bed with us.

In fact, Jeffie had his own pillow.

Jeffie enjoyed sleeping right in between me and the Dog Daddy.  He had his own pillow.  Though he liked to "spoon," he also liked to lay on his back and let it all hang out.

So, when I spotted Angela Bond's Bad Romance art print it was as if I'd had it custom made.  I ordered it immediately.

There we are:  me, Jeffie, the Dog Daddy.  Perfection!  And a very happy memory of our beautiful boy.

When Atlanta area based artist, Angela Bond, began painting her own cats and dogs, she often got requests for specific breeds and her business grew from there.
I admire dogs in part because they display what we consider to be some of the finest human traits; empathy, loyalty and resilience.
