Monty a 10 Year Old Coonhound Dog @#WaysideWaifs in #KCMO Wants a Home for the Holidays

Meet Montgomery, nicknamed Monty.  He's a 10 year old senior purebred Coonhound dog who has found himself in a shelter.  In fact, he's been in a shelter for a very long time.  First in a rural shelter and now at Wayside Waifs in Kansas City.

He may be a 10 year old senior, but he's still got some pep and energy, plus a whole lot of loving to do.  Please share him and help find him a home for the holidays.

Here's Monty's adoption message:
Hi there, I'm Montgomery, or Monty, as many of my good friends like to call me. I am one special, precious, sweet dog, filled with love and ready to be part of a family. My life has been sort of rough lately, but I will never let that get me down. Nope. I'm filled with faith that my family is out there for me, searching for me, ready to give me the good life.

I'm a handsome, 10 year old, 64 pounds of pure sweetness, purebred Coonhound. I keep my kennel very clean and I know to go to the bathroom outside, so with a little patience from you, I'm sure I will pick up on housetraining quickly. I've been in a shelter for a very long time though, so please be gentle with me and give me a little extra time to get into my new routine with you. I came to Wayside from a rural shelter in Kansas and I had been at that shelter for so long. The volunteers there loved me and hated to give me up, but they knew my best chance for my happily ever after would be at Wayside. So here I am!

Sometimes I get passed by because of my age or because I'm being treated for heartworms. Well, I'll be past this heartworm nonsense in no time and I don't mind staying calm and quiet for a few weeks while the medicine does its thing. As far as my senior status, I feel that age is just a number and I've got plenty of living left to do! I love to run and play and explore and stay active. And besides, none of us knows how long we have left on this earth, so the key is to appreciate each and every day. I'm very good at that!
I love people! I like to stay close and soak up any attention you will share with me. I want so much to live indoors with you and be part of the family. I'm anxious to please you and I'll make a wonderful companion. I'm perfect at just hanging out and chilling with the family. I'd like to meet everyone before we all go home together, including any kids or other dogs you have. I'm looking for a sort of quiet and calm home, but older kids and laidback dogs might be a good match for me. I love to go for leisurely walks with you and show off my hound nose. It feels so good to be by your side and feel your pride as we walk through our neighborhood.

I just want to belong to a real family. I want my golden years to be the best years of my life. I want to make your life better, just by having me in it. I'll do my best to make you happy every single day for the rest of my life. I can't wait to get started!
Love, Monty

Corgi Dog Song The True Prince of Wales by Nancy Simmonds | Dog Song Saturday

You shopped until you dropped yesterday, so take some time to relax today with a dog song!

We have another original dog song by Nancy Simmonds for you this Dog Song Saturday.  Today we're celebrating the Welsh Corgi dog breed with The True Prince of Wales.

We love Simmonds and we're pretty sure she's written more songs about dogs than any other musician.  In fact, we've lost count of the number of songs she's written dedicated to a specific dog breed.  Luckily she's counted them for us: over 110 purebred dog songs since the early 1990's!

Her Musical Tails series of songs is available from iTunes  Each song is designed to reflect the individual personality, temperament and history of the breed.

Grab a dog to snuggle.  A Corgi if you've got one!  Sit. Stay. Relax and enjoy The True Prince of Wales by Nancy Simmonds.

Scroll down below the delightful Corgi video (also made by Simmonds) for the lyrics so you can sing along.  Then fetch more dog song music videos here at Talking Dogs.  Every Saturday we feature original music written about dogs and the music videos are barking good!

The True Prince of Wales  ©NancySimmonds

You can kick up your feet, you can kick up your legs,
Kickin' up dust can't keep me away.
I'm under your heels and over the ground
Wherever you turn I can turn you around.
Standing high on a hill over the sea
I'm the true Prince of Wales and the Queen loves me.
I earned my place in history and they call me -
Corgi -
Deedle dum deedle deedle deedle dee
Deedle deedle deedle dee -
Corgi
I can clear the path and scatter the herd,
Spread 'em far and wide across the earth.
The whistle blows one high one low,
As long as I hear that whistle I go.
Standing high on a hill over the sea
I'm the true Prince of Wales and the Queen loves me.
I earned my place in history and they call me -
Corgi -
Deedle dum deedle deedle deedle dee
Deedle deedle deedle dee -
Corgi

From Cardinganshire to Pembroke, Wales
They love me with or without a tail.
From the hillsmen up through royalty
I deeply love my family.
Standing high on a hill over the sea
I'm the true Prince of Wales and the Queen loves me.
I earned my place in history and they call me -
Corgi -
Deedle dum deedle deedle deedle dee
Deedle deedle deedle dee -
Corgi

First Snow of the Season | Wordless Wednesday

Saturday morning we woke to a white out. It was beautiful, even though it had been too warm and most of the snow melted as it hit the ground.
There was just enough of the white stuff to get a good snuffle going.
Rudy has noticed I have the camera
which just might mean there are dog treats involved.
Nope. No yummy treats. Just the camera.
What a disappointment.

What You Need to Know About Leptospirosis

Since losing Jeffie to Leptospirosis (Lepto) and related liver failure, I now know more about Lepto than I ever cared to.  I want to share what I've learned so that, hopefully, it may save the life of another dog.

Leptospirosis is everywhere.
That's a quote from our veterinarian.

What is Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is caused by spirochaete bacteria belonging to the genus Leptospira. 21 species of Leptospira have been identified. It is also classified based on their serovar (distinct variations within a species of bacteria or viruses.). About 250 pathogenic serovars of Leptospira are recognized.
Jeffie had Leptospirosis Grippotyphosa.
Leptospira bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water.  Leptospirosis is more common in areas with warm climates and high annual rainfall but it can occur anywhere. avma
I've been watching for Lepto symptoms in myself and my husband because  Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease
That means it can be spread from animals to people. Infection in people can cause flu-like symptoms and can cause liver or kidney disease. In the United States, most cases of human leptospirosis result from recreational activities involving water. Infection resulting from contact with an infected pet is much less common, but it is possible.
Rudy and Rosie are tired of me keeping a close eye on how much they're drinking, urinating, and the color of their gums because dogs are most commonly affected by Lepto.
Leptospirosis in cats is rare and appears to be mild although very little is known about the disease in this species. Common risk factors for leptospirosis in dogs residing in the United States include exposure to or drinking from rivers, lakes or streams; roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife, farm animals, or water sources); exposure to wild animal or farm animal species, even if in the backyard; and contact with rodents or other dogs.
Jeffie became infected in his own backyard. Probably from partially eating  a rabbit he caught.

Dogs can become infected and develop leptospirosis if their mucous membranes (or skin with any wound, such as a cut or scrape) come into contact with infected urine, urine-contaminated soil, water, food or bedding; through a bite from an infected animal; by eating infected tissues or carcasses; and rarely, through breeding. It can also be passed through the placenta from the mother dog to the puppies.

Symptoms
Some dogs with mild lepto infections never show any symptoms at all. Some dogs have a mild illness and recover spontaneously. Others develop severe illness and death.
Jeffie had NO symptoms until overnight he became shockingly ill with weakness, shivering. He refused to eat anything, was reluctant to drink and seemed to be in great pain.
When symptoms do occur they usually appear between 4 and 12 days after exposure to the bacteria. Clinical signs depend on the age and health of the dog, environmental factors affecting the bacteria, and the virulence of the particular species (serovar) of bacteria that is present.

Signs of leptospirosis may include fever, shivering, muscle tenderness, reluctance to move, increased thirst, changes in the frequency or amount of urination, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes), or painful inflammation within the eyes.
First Lepto attacked Jeffie's kidneys, then moved on to his liver and, eventually, his lungs. Jeffie became jaundiced, continued to refuse food, was dehydrated, weak and lethargic.
Complications
The disease can cause kidney failure with or without liver failure.

Since the infection primarily affects the kidneys and liver, in serious cases there can be jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes. In dogs, it is usually most obvious in the whites of the eyes. Jaundice indicates the presence of hepatitis (liver inflammation) as a result of the destruction of liver cells by the bacteria.
His last day Jeffie had some minor nosebleeds. We force fed him and kept him hydrated, but the Lepto continued to rage and caused acute respiratory distress.
Leptospirosis can cause bleeding disorders, which can lead to blood-tinged vomit, urine, stool or saliva; nosebleeds. In rare cases, leptospirosis can also cause respiratory distress and acute pulmonary (lung) hemorrhage.

Treatment
Some dogs exposed to leptospirosis recover without medical treatment because they never show overt symptoms. Unfortunately, an untreated dog who recovers from the infection can become a carrier and shed the bacteria in urine for up to a year.

Dogs that become seriously ill with leptospirosis must be hospitalized to receive antibiotics and appropriate supportive care to control vomiting and diarrhea, and to provide hydration and nutrition.
Jeffie was hospitalized twice for a number of days so that he could receive IV antibiotics and hydration. He still refused to eat and had to be force fed.
Dogs with milder infections can be managed at home as long as the owner takes appropriate hygiene precautions when cleaning up urine. If your dog has lepto and anyone in your family develops flu-like symptoms, it’s important that you inform your family physician that a leptospirosis infection is a possibility.

Prevention
There is a vaccine for leptospirosis, but not all vets recommend it.  The vaccine carries a risk of adverse reactions and can even trigger the disease in some dogs.  It cannot protect against all serovars of Leptospira and, as we found out, the vaccine is not 100% effective.

If you live where infections are a problem, it's important to keep your pet away from ponds, slow moving water and standing or stagnant water.  Dogs exposed to potentially contaminated water sources or wild animals are at much greater risk than city dogs.

It took a week of hospitalization with daily lab work, xrays, ultrasound and more to finally get a diagnosis. Titer blood testing from the state vet school labs confirmed our vet's diagnosis of Leptospirosis.
Note: Titers may be negative in the first 10 days after initial infection, so many times additional samples must be drawn and tested to get a positive diagnosis.  In Jeffie's case, we spent a whole week not knowing he was suffering from Lepto.

Jeffie died in my arms as we were rushing to the vet. Probably from acute lung hemorrhage.

Adopt #SeniorDog Lilly a #Pitbull Mix @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This beautiful senior girl is Lilly.  She is a 10 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix. Animal shelter staff and volunteers report that Lilly is a sweet soul. She loves to go for walks, play with balls and toys, plus she's smart and eager to please.

Be sure to watch Lilly's adoption video. Note: it was filmed well over a year ago. Lilly has been waiting for a home for a very long time.

Here's Lilly's adoption message:
Hi there, I'm Lilly! I am such a simple, sweet soul, just longing for the love of a forever family. I promise not to ask for much...just a quiet life with you by my side would mean the world to me. I try so hard not to lose hope or feel down that I'm homeless once again. But I'm one of those dogs who never seem to be able to catch a break in life. I know that happens with people too, so I don't mean to complain. I try my best to look forward and have faith that this is where I am meant to be in order to finally find you.

I'm a laidback, easygoing, senior dog, weighing in at 48 pounds of solid muscle and love. I'm already housebroken, but please be patient with me when we get home, as I get used to my new routine with you. I have been through a lot in my life. I lost one home because my breed wasn't welcome in the city I lived in. I spent months at Wayside, searching for a new family. And I was eventually adopted, but my owner couldn't care for me. It was a stressful time for all of us and I was treated harshly in that home. That's why I flinch at times when you approach me now. I'm a loyal and loving dog, so this time around I am looking for a kind and gentle person to share my life with.

I'm sort of a rock star here at Wayside and I'm proud to say that the volunteers love me! They make me feel so special and cared for. I love to go out for walks and I enjoy my exercise time. It helps me to stay happy and healthy. I do pull on my leash sometimes, but a harness works just great for me. And I love to play with balls and toys. I'm smart and eager to please, so I'm always open to learning new things. Please use positive reinforcement with me, by praising me when I am a good girl, because I respond very well to that. I'm sort of an independent gal, so I promise not to bother you for constant attention. But when you want me, just call my name and I will be there! I'm affectionate and cuddly and super sweet. I love to be by your side, curled up next to you on the couch or just in the same room with you. I just like to know that you're there. I'm chilled out and relaxed in a home or car or fenced in yard.

Since I'm looking for a quiet and calm home without a lot going on, I think I'll be happiest in a home without kids under the age of at least 5. And I can be picky about my dog friends, but I tend to do best with other low energy dogs. Or I'd love to be your only dog as well! Why don't you just plan to bring the whole family out to meet me and we'll see how we all get along.

I'm not sure why finding my forever family has been so elusive for me. I'm a wonderful dog with so much to offer. I will make a loyal, devoted companion to you for the rest of my life. I'd love to make up for lost time and find the perfect new home where we can just hang out and appreciate each other. I don't need adventure or much to do...I just need you. I hope you need me too!
Love, Lilly

The Dog Song by Buck Pryor | Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday, so time for a new dog song here at Talking Dogs.  We've got a good one for you today called... The Dog Song.

I don't know why so many songwriters use this title - there must be hundreds of The Dog Songs.

Anyway, this original dog song is by singer songwriter Buck Pryor from his Roo album which is available on iTunes and Amazon.. If you'd like to sing along, scroll down below the video for the lyrics.

Sit. Stay. Mellow out your day with The Dog Song by Buck Pryor.  Then fetch more dog song music videos here at Talking Dogs.  Every Saturday we feature original music written about dogs and the music videos are barking good!

The Dog Song lyrics ©Buck Pryer

I went outside, the sun was hard
When I threw my dogs in the yard
They looked so good runnin' around
Think I got the best dogs in town
You pick me up when I am blue
You love me honest, through and through
I fear not, when I'm with you
Wanted to say that you're a dream on a sunny day
That you're ice cream when skies are grey for me
I want you to know, I want you around everywhere I go
And I believe everyone should know, you see
I walked to town, had a look around
Too few folk with too many frowns
I picked up a paper, it was crap
Who said this, who said that
Whose boobs are big, whose chest is flat
But there's no crap when I'm with you
It feels so good to feel so true
You pick me up when I am blue
