Stray Dogs Prayer by Heino Obenhaus | Dog Song Saturday

Welcome to Dog Song Saturday at Talking Dogs!  Today's featured dog song music video may require a tissue alert.

A Stray Dog's Prayer is an original dog song and was composed by Heino "Bottleneck" Obenhaus.  The video that accompanies it was created by Heino with his own dog, Ginger.

Sit. Stay. Grab a tissue and enjoy A Stray Dog's Prayer.  Then fetch more dog songs at Talking Dogs. You'll be surprised at how many we've added to our collection.
A STRAY DOG'S PRAYER

Dear God please send me somebody who'll care!
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching, it's so racked with pain
dear God I pray as I run in the rain.

That someone will love me and give me a home
A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone.
My last owner tied me all day in the yard
Sometimes with no water and God that was hard!

So I chewed my leash God and I ran away
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now God I'm tired and hungry and cold
And I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old.

They've chased me with sticks hit me with stones
While I run the streets just looking for bones!
I'm not really bad God, please help if you can
For I have become just a "victim of man!"

I'm wormy dear God and I'm ridden with fleas
and all that I want is an owner to please!
If you find one for me God, I'll try to be good
I won't chew their shoes, and I'll do as I should.

I will love them, protect them and try to obey
When they tell me to sit, to lie down or to stay!
I don't think I'll make it too long on my own
Cause I'm getting so weak and I'm Oh so alone.

Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry
Cause I'm so afraid God, that I'm gonna die!
I've got so much love and devotion to give
That I should be given a new chance to live.

So dear God please, please answer my prayer
send me somebody who will really care,
That is, dear God, if You're really there.

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day - Celebrating Special Friends

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day - a special day for pet guardians to honor the memory of cherished pets who have passed on.

I've been blessed with many loving animal companions in my life, including equine, bovine, canine, feline and fowl.  Since this is primarily a dog blog, I've chosen to include my dogs in the graphic above, along with one very special cat.

I have no doubt that they'll be there to great me "on the other side."  And there is no doubt that I miss these sweet souls every single day:
  • My shelter dog, Benji, who lost a leg to cancer yet lived to a ripe old age. He joined me when I was in college and we grew up together.
  • My shelter dog, Sherman, a stroke survivor succumbed to old age. He was fully of mischief and honestly earned the nickname "Trash Dog."
  • My rescued Border Collie, Lizzy, who left me way too early. She chose me and I still feel the honor of that trust.
  • My shelter dog, Spanky, who lost his battle to mouth cancer. He knew no fear and brings to mind the word courage.
  • Sweet Petey who sometimes seemed more dog than cat.
  • My rescued dog, Tucker, the original Talking Dog. I strongly believe he was sent to us.  Thank goodness.
  • My heart dog Lucy.   Oh, Lucy.  She's the dog in my business logo and my heart still aches from the loss.
My mind plays little videos of good times together. They may be gone from this earthly plane, but they still are with me.  My heart remembers and feels the love.

Established by Deborah Barnes in honor of her beloved, Jazz, Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is a special day dedicated to honoring the memory of cherished pets worldwide.

Barnes has created a special event page on Facebook so that on August 28th people will be able to pay tribute to that pet (s) in any way that feels most comfortable to them, such as by posting a picture, writing a poem, or sharing a favorite story or memory. Barnes hopes this will become an annual event and rather than it being a day of sadness, she wants it to be “a celebration – a time to remember those pets we have lost with love and happiness – for however long or short their time on this earth was.”

Celebrate #NationalDogDay - Adopt a Shelter Dog

Today is National Dog Day.  This holiday is dedicated to celebrating dogs and the essential role they play in our lives.

Founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige, National Dog Day was created to honor dogs and give them a special day to show appreciation for our long connection to each other, for their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work, their capacity for love and their ability to impact our lives every day in the most miraculous ways.

National Dog Day is also a day to bring attention to the many dogs that are in shelters and rescues waiting for a forever home.  One of the best ways to celebrate this special day is by adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue.

My own shelter dogs, Jeffie and Rosie, encourage you to adopt your next best friend from an animal shelter or rescue.  In fact, your local shelter may be celebrating National Dog Day with reduced adoption fees.  Can't adopt right now?  Please consider donating to your local shelter.  Even $5 can mean a lot!

Rudy may not be a shelter dog, but he's got some good ideas to celebrate National Dog Day:
  • Donate blankets, pet food and toys to your local shelter or rescue.
  • Visit your local animal shelter and take a shelter dog for a walk.
  • Write your Congressman and ask that he/she support the ban of Puppy Mills and gas chambers in your state.
  • Order a dog shaped flower arrangement from 1-800-Flowers.com and enjoy a 10% discount by using the code GOODLIVING when you place your order.
  • Help an ill or elderly friend or neighbor by walking their dog.
  • Buy your dog a fun new dog toy.
  • Have a little party for your dog with treats, toys and extra cuddles.

Happy National Dog Day
from all of us at
Talking Dogs and For Love of a Dog Jewelry!

Adopt Woofie an #AustralianCattleDog Mix @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This handsome fellow is Woofie.  Don't you just love that sweet face and name?  Woofie is a 5 year old Australian Cattle Dog / Shepherd mix.

Woofie is crate trained, knows sit and come commands.  He had some hard time on the streets and tends to be fearful of other dogs.  He's hoping for a forever home with no small children or cats.

Here's Woofie's adoption message:
I am an Australian Cattle Dog/Shepherd mix male dog of 41 lbs. I am medium in size and about 5 yrs. old. You will love my fur because it is dense and very fluffy and soft!

I have been without a home for a while and found on the street by a caring person that took me in. They hoped they could find my owner by themselves but that didn't come to be. This person wanted to add me to their family but they had too many other dogs already. I became crate trained and feel I am at least partially house trained. Being the smart dog I am commands of "sit", and "come" were easy for me to learn. Food really gets my attention for training purposes. My breed back ground and current behavior suggests I am a high energy dog and need attention and activity to keep me happy. So if you are an active outdoor person I would love to me you! My capacity for learning is limitless just give me a chance.
I have been tested with other dogs here at the shelter and I find that it is over whelming. I tend to freeze up from fear and will growl to protect myself. Life on the street is unpredictable and so I carry that memory with me. I know that forever home is just around the corner! The new family needs to give me a little tenderness and go slow for me to gain confidence in myself and in them. When approaching me if I seem very nervous it is suggested that you make yourself look smaller by kneeling down to the ground or sitting. Humans are so tall! I have the great heritage of very intelligent dog bloodlines and would make an excellent companion.
To add to my back ground it is known that I have been around older children and did fine but I am not recommended for children under 5 years. No cats please or other small furry animals. Please bring your family and other dogs to meet me if you want to add me to your family so we can meet on neutral territory and become friends first.
Your friend, Woofie

Contact Wayside Waifs for more information about Woofie at 816-761-8151. Woofie's animal ID number is 28202926

Merrick Jerky Chip Dog Treats from @Chewy.com Product Review

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie are always ready to try new dog products. So they were enthusiastic when Chewy.com asked if they'd like to give some Merrick Jerky Chip dog treats a taste test.  With Chewy's super fast shipping, in just a couple of days Jeffie got a chance to scare the FedEx man and take delivery of their package.

Merrick Jerky Chip Treats are oven-baked, all-natural dog cookie treats filled with protein-packed jerky chips as the first ingredient, made from real deboned chicken, beef, lamb, or salmon. Unlike many dog treats, Merrick Jerky Chip Treats are grain-free and gluten-free with no corn, soy or wheat. And, like all Merrick food and treats, Merrick Jerky Chip Treats are made in the USA with no ingredients from China.

They come in four flavors: Real Beef, Real Chicken, Real Lamb + Potato, Real Salmon + Potato.  We received a 10 oz bag of Real Chicken Recipe treats.
Rudy was thrilled to get the first taste.
Ingredients:
Deboned Chicken, Dried Potatoes, Peas, Garbanzo Beans, Tapioca Starch, Pea Fiber, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Dried Carrots, Brown Sugar, Dried Egg Product, Dried Apples, Caramel Color, Gelatin, Yogurt Powder, Salt, Cultured Skim Milk Powder, Mixed Tocopherols (a preservative), Rosemary, Sage, Thyme.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (min.)14%
Crude Fat (min.) 10%
Crude Fiber (max.) 9%
Moisture (max.) 10%
31 kcal per treat
Rosie demonstrates excellent treat begging focus.
The dogs really do love these dog treats!  They're generous in size (about 2" in diameter) and a bit high in calorie per treat, so I've been rationing them.  However, that's the only cautionary note.  I like that there are good healthy ingredients and that they're made in the US.

Merrick pet food and treat recipes use USDA inspected deboned meat and fresh produce for industry-leading levels of protein, glucosamine and chondroitin.  Merrick never imports ingredients from China.  All their food is handcrafted in their Hereford, Texas kitchen with ingredients from farmers they know and trust. In 2012 Merrick earned organic certification under the USDA National Organic Program for all of their Texas based manufacturing facilities.

We first reviewed Chewy.com online pet products over 3 years ago. We loved them then and we still do.  With over 300 brands of pet food and other pet products ready to ship with their super fast front door service, what's not to love.  Living in a rural area, I especially appreciate that I can purchase brands and products I can't find locally.

There are lots of reasons to like Chewy.com
  • Fast shipping to our front door (free if our order is over $49)
  • Over 200 brands to choose from in pet food, treats, and supplies
  • Great prices and frequent sales
  • Easy to navigate web site and terrific customer service
  • Chewy.com gives back via their Shelter and Rescue Network
Final verdict:  Lip smacking good!

* We received one package of Merrick Jerky Chip Treats Oven-baked Cookies for Dogs from Chewy.com in exchange for our honest review of the product and service.

Adopt Popeye a #Pitbull Dog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO | TuesdaysTails

This handsome guy is Popeye. He's a Pitt Bull Terrier mix and only a little over a year old.  According to shelter staff and volunteers, Popeye is a happy, smart, athletic boy.  Just look at that smile!

Here's Popeye's adoption message:
Hi there, I'm Popeye! I'll bet you noticed my big, beautiful smile! You'll find that I wear that a lot, because I'm a happy, playful boy and I love people. I'm 47 pounds of love and muscle, plus I'm outrageously handsome, smart and athletic. With all those things going for me, it's hard to believe I'm homeless, isn't it? Well...that won't be for long, because the word is getting out about what a great all around guy I am! Let me tell you more!

When I first got to Wayside, everyone here was impressed by my good looks and intelligence, and I acted very much like a happy, VERY energetic puppy. It was all fun and games for me, but for a dog of my size and strength, silly puppy habits are not always appreciated! Lucky for me, the expert staff here knew I was a perfect candidate for a training program here at Wayside that they call the "Peace Academy."

During my time in that program, I learned things that help me control my impulses. Brace yourself, because here are just a few of the commands I have mastered...sit, down, come, look, stay/wait, target, off, leave-it, drop-it, and touch! Whew....pretty impressive, isn't it? I graduated from Peace Academy with honors! I guess I'm bragging a little, but it will be important for us to practice these commands once we get home. This will help me focus my attention on what you want, and help me remember my manners!

Because I'm high energy and still have a bit of a rough play style, I'm looking for an active home with no kids under 5. Oh...I almost forgot to tell you how great I am in playgroups here with other dogs! The staff here describes me as "da bomb" in playgroups! In case you're not familiar with that term, it means I'm an awesome play mate, especially for dogs with a similar energy level. After a play session, I love cooling off in the kiddie pool.

I am sometimes a little serious about my food, so I'll need a safe place to eat, away from kids and other dogs. That's no big deal....nobody likes to be bugged while they're eating, do they?!

It's hard to learn perfect house manners when you're living in a shelter, so I'll probably need a refresher course in housebreaking once we get home. I'm smart and will do just fine once I get used to my new environment, and we get our routine established.

I don't mean to make you panic or anything, but word is getting out about how awesome I am, and there's a line forming in front of my kennel for people who want to make me a part of their family! You'd better come on out to Wayside - I am ready to go home with you NOW!!!
Love,Popeye

Contact Wayside Waifs for more information about Popeye at 816-761-8151. Popeye's animal ID number is 27994871

Jeffie's enjoys Evangers Classic Recipes Senior and Weight Management Dinner canned dog food as a topper on his kibble.  This Evanger's Classic Recipe is the original formula developed by Dr. Fred Evanger and contains no corn, wheat or soy. It is a simple meat-based formula for obligate carnivores.

My dogs love Evanger's canned dog food.  I love Evanger's pet food products, too and here's why:
  • Made in the United States by a family owned and operated company since 1935.
  • Free of harmful additives and preservatives
  • No soy, corn, wheat or by-products
  • Human grade ingredients
  • Every single product smelled good and looked good to the humans. (However, we did have to watch out for bones in the chicken thighs; cans do contain an appropriate warning)
  • Competitively priced for premium organic pet food
  • A VERY wide selection of food and treats: beef, chicken, fish, lamb and more.  Many recipes for pets with special needs.
I also love the story behind Evanger's.  Back in 1935, Fred Evanger bred, exhibited, and championed his Great Danes in international kennel clubs.  He believed that the key to his success in the show ring, as well as his dogs' health and the health of their offspring was due to nutritious food.

In fact, he felt so strongly about it that he built a canning factory on his family farm so he could make a quality pet food. Even back then, Evanger's dog food was free of additives and preservatives.  In fact, he used crops and livestock raised on the family farm.

In 2003, Evanger's was the first pet food company to create pet food packed by hand instead of machine by putting whole pieces of fresh meat and vegetables into the cans.  You read that right.  Open a can of Evanger's and you'll probably recognize the ingredients.  Yes, that's real shredded, pulled (organic) chicken.  OMD!  those are chicken drumsticks, alright!

In addition, many of their recipes are created especially for dogs with special diet needs:  food allergies, low fat diet, gluten free,  sensitive stomach, irritable bowel syndrome and more.  They also have a large line of Kosher Kosher pet food products, as well as healthy selections for cats.

I should note that I found no evidence of any recalls for Evanger's pet food products, however, there were some issues with the USFDA in early 2011 regarding  misbranding of ingredients, none of which constituted a health or safety issue.

We also give Chewy.com our highest recommendation.  With over 300 brands of pet food and other pet products ready to ship with their speedy front door service, what's not to love? Living in a rural area, I love that I can purchase brands and products that I can't find locally.  Chewy.com has great prices and there's always a sale going on some of our favorite products.  Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Chewy.com has warehouses located throughout the country to guarantee orders are delivered quickly.  Their website is super simply to navigate and their customer service is terrific.
