Adopt Maddie a 6 Year Old Black #LabradorRetriever at @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

Here we go again. Another dog surrendered to a shelter because the owners had a human baby.  Maddie was originally adopted as a puppy from Wayside Waifs. Her owners had a new baby and things took a bad turn as that baby became a toddler.  As Maddie shares in her adoption message, Maddie was sometimes scared of the toddler and the toddler was sometimes scared of Maddie.

In my opinion it could have been a learning experience for all involved.  Instead Maddie was surrendered to Wayside Waifs where she's now hoping for a new family that will love her forever.

Maddie is a 6 year old black Labrador Retriever mix with a doggone beautiful grin.  She's spayed, crate trained, walks nicely on a leash and knows lots of commands.  She's also stressed and lonely at the shelter.

Read Maddie's adoption message and then call Wayside Waifs at 816-761-8151. Maddie's animal ID number is 8125341.
Hi, I'm Maddie! Yikes...I'm not really sure what I'm doing here. There must be some mistake. I'm a family dog who belongs in a home and gets a daily walk and is loved and cared for and spoiled. It was never part of my plan to be in a homeless shelter again. I barely remember the last time I was here. I was just a pup and was quickly adopted. So when I found myself back where it all started, well, I've been just a little anxious and unsure. I hope my new family finds me very soon!

I'm a beautiful, 6 year old, 50 pounds of pure love, already housetrained and crate trained, Labrador Retriever mix. I'm smart, affectionate, friendly, and I love people. I first came to Wayside as a wee pup, back in 2009, and I quickly found a new home and family that I adored. We've been together for the past 6 years now and my life has been pretty wonderful. My family had a baby a couple years ago though, and now that she's a toddler, sometimes she scares me. And sometimes I scare her. I'm a perfect dog in so many ways, but every once in a while, I get protective of my special treats and I don't want anyone near them. My little toddler friend doesn't understand that. So my family decided to bring me back to Wayside, hoping I'll find a new family that is a perfect match for me. I miss them very much and I imagine they miss me too, but sometimes things are out of my control, so I have no choice but to carry on and keep looking forward. Luckily, I am a resilient dog with so much to offer, so I hope to not be homeless for long.
My previous family had so many great things to say about me! When they were gone, sometimes they'd put me in my crate and I did just fine there. I loved going for a daily walk or run, playing and goofing off in the backyard, taking an occasional trip to the dog park, and munching on my favorite treats. I did just great in the backyard, with a 6 foot wooden fence. In our old house though, there was a chain link fence that I'd sometimes climb over, if I got bored and was left out alone too long. Funny thing is, once I got over the fence, I'd just walk to the front door, asking to get let back in. I'll need you to keep an eye on me when I'm outside, and make sure I stay safe and secure in my yard. When we had company, I'd greet them with a friendly welcome. I was smart and eager to learn and I know all sorts of commands, including sit, stay, come, down, heel, and off. I'm a quick learner and I love to make you happy, so training me is easy and fun. I walk perfectly on my leash and I'm relaxed and calm during car rides.

In my last home, I lived with another dog and we did just fine together most of the time. On rare occasion, we'd get in arguments about food or special treats. Our mom fed us separately and that typically worked out just fine for us. Since I can be serious about my food though, I hope you will feed me in a quiet and safe place, where no one will bother me. And I'd like to meet the whole family, including any other dogs you have, before we go home together. I also want to meet all the kids in the family and I think I'll be happiest with kids over the age of at least 10.
I'm feeling sort of stressed and lonely at the shelter. I don't mean to complain or cause any trouble though. I'm grateful that I have a second chance in life. I'm grateful that my life so far has been filled with love and fun. I know what it means to be a beloved member of a family. And I know how to give unconditional love to you. I can't wait to show you what an incredible dog I am! Please come out to meet me very soon. My kennel seems so lonely and I can't wait to have a home again.
Love, Maddie

A Mans Best Friend by @LukePaulJackson | Dog Song Saturday

Join us every week for a new Dog Song Saturday here at Talking Dogs.  Each Saturday we feature a music video with songs about dogs.  Most of our favorite dog songs are original songs like the one we have for you today.

Musician and songwriter Luke Paul Jackson put together this video illustrating his song with images he collected around the web.  You may recognize a few from Pets of the Homeless which aptly describe the message of Jackson's song.

Man's Best Friend  is a beautiful tribute to the loving relationship between men and their dogs.

Jackson is a rising young Roots singer/songwriter from Canterbury, Kent , and 2013 saw him nominated for both the Horizon Award for Best Emerging Talent and the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. Find out more about Jackson at his web site.

Take Your Dog to Work Day #TYDTWD at For Love of a Dog

Take Your Dog To Work Day was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) in 1999 to celebrate the great companions dogs made and promote their adoption. It's an annual event and is always celebrated on the Friday following Father's Day.

TYDTWDay encourages employers to experience the joys of pets in the workplace for one day to support their local pet community. PSI believes that this is a way for non-pet owners to see firsthand the special bond their coworkers have with their pets and be encouraged to adopt a new best friend of their own.

Here at For Love of a Dog Jewelry we celebrate Take Your Dog To Work Day every day.  Yep, we're among the pawesome work places that is totally dog friendly.
Trained by security expert, Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie are on the job.

Okay, I admit it.  As a one woman three dog business, that's pretty easy.  If I'm in the house working on computer chores, my pack is nearby.  Often one or two are keeping an eye on the outside.  Security measures.  You never know when FedEx or UPS might come down our lane.

Security patrols include my jewelry studio.  I can work easy knowing my pack is on duty.
If I'm out in my studio creating pet lover jewelry, my posse is with me providing doggone good inspiration.

"Are you about done, mama? Can we go back to the house now?

If you don't have a special friend of your own, we're hoping we've inspired you to add one to your life.  Head to your local animal shelter and adopt a best friend!

Since they were both adopted from Dogwood Animal Shelter in Osage Beach, MO, Jeffie and Rosie decided to make a few suggestions:

Adopt Keke a #Pitbull Dog @HSMO in #StLouis

This pretty girl is Keke.  She's a spayed female Pit Bull Terrier mix who is about 3 years old.  Keke's has a beautiful brindle and white coat and one of the sweetest faces I've ever seen.

Keke adores people.  She walks nicely on a leash and animal shelter staff report she constantly watches for approval.  Keke would like a quiet home because she can be shy around new people and new situations.

Keke is a mellow girl who's looking for love.  Take a look at her adoption video and then give the Humane Society of Missouri St Louis City animal shelter a call at 314-951-1562.  Keke's animal ID number is A592940

Dog Treats and Toys from @Chewy

Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie especially love Chewy this month because they were sent a dog toy and a bag of dog treats to review.  That's twice as much fun!

They were more than happy to taste test some Orijen Free Run Duck Singles Freeze-Dried Dog Treats.

Made from cage-free duck raised on natural grains and well water in Ontario, Cananda, these unique treats are loaded with goodness and natural flavor. They're gently freeze-dried to keep your cherished dog healthy, happy and strong, and are made without cooking or preservatives so you can feel good about treating him!

  • Made from 100% meat and nothing else!
  • Freeze-dried to lock in flavor and nutrition
  • Guaranteed analysis to mirror mother nature
  • Low calorie and carbohydrate free
  • Approximately 55 treats per 2-oz bag and 95 treats per 3.5-oz bag
Ingredients:
 Duck liver, boneless duck

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (min.)50%
Crude Fat (min.)30%
Crude Fiber (max.)1%
Moisture (max.)2%

Jeffie loves the smell of Orijen Free Run Duck dog treats.

All three of my dogs have enjoyed Orijen dog treats and freeze dried dog food, so I was confident they'd like these treats.  I love that they contain just one real ingredient: duck.   Jeffie and Rosie loved them.  In the interest of full disclosure I have to tell you that Rudy spit his out.  Guess he's not into duck.
Quack, quack! Jeffie and Rosie want more!

The good folks at Chewy also sent us a KONG Squeezz Ball with Handle Dog Toy

KONG Squeezz Ball with Handle is the perfect interactive toy for you and your dog. Designed for durability with a recessed, protected squeaker, KONG Squeezz Ball with Handle is great for indoor and outdoor use.
Rosie got the hang of the KONG Squeezz Ball with Handle right away.

Key Benefits
  • Perfect for tossing, tugging and retrieving
  • Recessed/protected squeaker induces play
  • Available in two sizes: M and L
  • Colors vary (Ruby, Amethyst, Emerald or Sapphire) - You choose the size, color ships at random!
We received a ruby KONG Squeezz Ball for large dogs and it was a big hit with my dog pack.
You want me to tug it?  How about you throw it instead.

The squeaker is just loud enough to be interesting to my dogs - without getting on our nerves.  Though Rosie really wanted to chew on the handle and Rudy preferred playing fetch instead of tug of war, I'd say the KONG Sqeezz Ball is a winner.
Umm, Rosie, you're not supposed to chew the handle.
Rudy says:  Throw it!

We've been giving our dogs KONG toys for years.  We've found them to be safe, soft in their mouths, very durable, and they keep our dogs engaged for both inside and outside play.   The KONG Squeezz Ball with Handle is a barking good addition to the KONG dog toy offerings.
Rudy and Rosie love this new KONG toy for their tandom retrieving.

We first became aware of Chewy online pet products over three years ago.  We loved them then and we still do.  Living in a rural area, we can purchase brands and products that we can't find locally.  Plus, Chewy has great prices and there's always a sale going on some of our favorite dog products.

There are lots of reasons to like Chewy.com
  • Fast shipping to our front door (free if our order is over $49)
  • Over 200 brands to choose from in pet food, treats, and supplies
  • Great prices and frequent sales
  • Easy to navigate web site and terrific customer service
  • Chewy.com gives back via their Shelter and Rescue Network
 * We received a KONG Squeezz Squeezz Ball with Handle dog toy and one 2 oz package of Orijen Free-Run Duck dog treats from Chewy.com in exchange for our honest review of the product and service.  We received no other compensation - financial or otherwise.

Adopt Lucky a Black #LabradorRetriever Dog @WaysideWaifs in #KCMO

This sweet girl is Lucky.  She's a 3 1/2 year old Labrador Retriever mix.  At 65 pounds she's a big girl. Athletic, playful and already housebroken, Lucky would love to be your best friend.

Here's her adoption message:
Hi, I'm Lucky! And oh boy, lucky is how I've felt my whole entire life, at least until I became homeless. And I suppose I'm still lucky, because being at Wayside gives me the chance to find you and start the next chapter of my life. It's sort of exciting in a way, thinking about you and waiting for you and wondering what day you'll be able to come for me. I am a smart, friendly, social, fun dog who never has a bad day and appreciates every moment of life. I have a delightful personality and I love pretty much everyone I meet.

I am a beautiful, 3 ½ year old, 65 pound, already housetrained, Labrador Retriever mix. I'm athletic and playful and an overall wonderful companion. I came to Wayside when my previous owner could no longer take care of me. We had been together since I was a puppy and we loved each other very much. But things in his life changed and he wasn't able to take me along for the ride. I was sad, that's for sure, when I realized our time together was ending, but I'm trying my best to understand. I've learned that sometimes life doesn't happen exactly like you had planned. Sometimes things are out of your control. And sometimes you just have to get up in the morning and hope it's a good day. A good day for me will be the day you find me and welcome me into your family!

My dad had so many great things to say about me! I was very well behaved in my home. I was crate trained as a puppy and did just fine with that. When I got older, I didn't need the crate any longer, and I did just great in my home. Before my dad left home, he'd make sure I went to the bathroom, so that I didn't have any accidents while he was away. He said I could hold it for about 6-8 hours, although I'd much rather have you around more often. I'm a people dog and I love to be by your side. I was an indoor dog, except when I went out to run and play. I hope to have a fenced in yard in my new home, because I love to play fetch and run around and act goofy. I also enjoy going for a daily walk or a run. I do pretty well on my leash, but a harness works too, if I pull too much for you.

In my last home, I got along really well with everyone...including all the adults, kids of all ages, visitors, the other dog in my home, and even the family cat! Still, I'd like to meet the whole family, to make sure we're all a good fit for one another. And I'd like a home without any small, furry animals, such as bunnies. With other dogs, I like to control things and sometimes I'm bossy. The dog I used to live with was fine with that, but not all dogs will appreciate my style. I'd be perfectly happy being your only dog as well, of course! And sometimes I can be jumpy with people. I'm working on that though, and I'm a smart gal, so you can teach me not to do this! Please be consistent with me and teach me in a positive way what you expect from me. I already know lots of commands, including sit, stay, come, shake, fetch, and rollover. My dad invested lots of time training me and I'm a beautifully behaved dog!

I hope you will be dedicated and committed to me. I have lots of energy, so I will need exercise every day. I'm not the sort of dog who will be happy left alone in my crate for long days. I want to live and experience all life has to offer and go on an occasional adventure with you. I want to be your devoted companion. I want to proudly walk through our neighborhood with you and meet everyone and let them all pet me. I want to make your life happier and brighter, just by having me in it. I don't plan to be here at the shelter for long, so I hope you will come for me soon!
Love, Lucky

Carolina Dog by Grey Monroe | Dog Song Saturday

It's Saturday so time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.

Today we've got a very cool original dog song for you:  Carolina Dog.

Though we don't know much about him, Carolina Dog was composed by Grey Monroe.

Monroe hales from North Carolina and in this video he's singing to his own dog, Sydney.

Sit. Stay. Relax and enjoy Carolina Dog by Grey Monroe. Fetch more dog songs and music videos at Talking Dogs.  You'll be surprised at how many we've collected over the years.

Carolina Dog Lyrics:
Carolina dog on Copperhead Road
born in the south where the swamps still grow
Carolina dog she was sweet as pine
howled at the sun when her momma died
And she was wild, wild, wild

Carolina dog in a sugarcane field
runnin' down a rabbit just to get her fill
Carolina dog with a litter on the way
no food, no daddy, no place to stay
And she was wild, wild, wild

Carolina dog three pups to feed
but she ain't seen a rabbit in two long weeks
Carolina dog comes a walking' in to town
puppies at 'er heel when she hits the ground
Those Carolina dogs they were sweet as pine
they howled at the sun when their momma died
And they were wild, wild, wild

Along come a woman with a heart of gold
she took them Carolina dogs on home
Well she kept two and I got one
now me and my dog we howl at the sun
And now I'm wild, wild, wild

Calving by Moonlight | Farm Stories at Talking Dogs

Moonlight peeked through the limbs of the trees and cast a soft glow around us.

Midnight.  A soft springtime breeze caressed us as we slowly made our way through the dim woods.  I called softy:  nuuuu.  I sang a bit of a lullaby and stopped to wait for the answering "nuuus."

There they were.

We made our way to the herd.  Sure enough, there's Val.  They wouldn't let her give birth alone. The new already born calves of the herd are gathered around the soon to be new mother.  Their breath slightly steaming in the cool spring night. Close enough to warm her.

We settled in.

Talking to her soothingly. We pet her.  Rub her.  Check the calf.  Wait.

Time passes.  We chat with the cowgirls and calves.  I softly sing some more.

Val's having trouble.  One of us at her head; the other reaches in to grab the calf to pull.

Rhythmic pulls.  Tugs.   Here comes the calf.  Val is fine; the calf is fine.

It's a girl.

Val with her day old calf.

Note:  When we had cattle, we kept a very close eye on our first time heifers (young cows giving birth for the first time).  This meant in-the-middle-of-the night hikes with flashlights and lanterns.

When cows are getting ready to calve, they like to be alone.  They wander off to find a good private place.  At our place, that didn't work so well.  It may have been because I raised my cows as bottle calves and they'd all been together their whole lives.

For us this meant: find the herd, you'll find the heifer.

New Improved Canine DNA Test - Wisdom Panel 3.0

Where does Rosie get her short dainty legs from?  How about that big barrel chest? Why does she love digging holes in the backyard? Those are just a few of the questions we had when we decided to do a little sleuthing into Rosie's ancestors.

A dog's ancestry can not only influence behavior and appearance, but also it's health.  We wanted to make sure we could give Rosie the best life we could. These days we do genetic testing on our human babies to ensure they are as healthy as possible, why not on our fur babies?

We believed that knowing Rosie's  specific breed information could be a huge help when it came to her proper nutrition, training and overall healthcare.

So we turned to the Wisdom Panel for some DNA insights.  The Wisdom Panel tests for more than 190 dog breeds (the largest database currently on the market)

As I noted in Ignorance Meant Bliss - Rosie and her Wisdom Panel DNA Results, we're still laughing about Rosie's DNA. She also gained a new nickname: our little Akita.  Laughing because the shelter claimed Rosie was a black Golden Retriever.  Nope.

Rosie is 12.5% Akita, 12.5% Labrador Retriever, 12.5% Smooth Fox Terrier.  The other 62.5% is made up of other dog breeds which most likely are: Dogue de Bordeaux, Belgian Tervuren, French Bulldog, Basset Hound, and Shetland Sheepdog.

I'd have to say the big "ah ha" here were the Smooth Fox Terrier, French Bulldog and Basset Hound dog breeds present.  Reading these dog breed profiles actually told us quite a bit about our girl.  Enough that when the next mixed breed dog joins our family we'll be doing a Wisdom Panel for him or her.

Mars Veterinary, the industry leader in canine genetic testing, just released their next evolution of the canine DNA test—Wisdom Panel® 3.0— which not only expands the breed screening coverage, but the medical applications as well with the new MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening.

Why is the MDR1 screening important? Dogs with the MDR1-mutation may have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs, so it is important to test mixed-breed (and purebreds with the high-propensity breeds) dogs and for owners to share results with their veterinarian so they can provide the dog with the best possible care. For more information on breeds and drugs affected by the MDR1 mutation, visit Wisdom Panel's MDRI screening page.

The canine DNA test is so simple to use it can even be performed at home. Swab your dog's gum line for 15 seconds then send your test in to the lab for quick results. You'll get the results a few weeks later. To make things even easier for you, the cost of shipping in your swab is included in the price of the kit. Kits can be purchased 24/7 at Wisdom Panel's site.

When you send in your swab, your dog's DNA information is checked against a growing database of DNA information (over 10,000 samples). The Wisdom Panel test now covers over 250 breeds (including mixes), in addition to some medical screenings.

For testimonials and inspirational stories on how Wisdom Panel has helped dogs just like yours, watch the following video about Rocco who was previously tested:

Want to get the kit at a discounted price? Visit one of the events below. Stop by to get your kit at a discounted rate ($49.99, regularly $84.99), or even have Wisdom Panel test your dog on site for a discounted rate ($39.99).

Wisdom Panel will be visiting several cities throughout 2015 including:

  • GoPro Mountain Games - Vail, CO
  • Amazing Pet Expo - Austin, TX
  • Mars Pet Adoption Fair - Franklin, TN
  • Amazing Pet Expo Holiday - Los Angeles, CA

Adopt Sammy a #Pitbull Mix Dog @HSMO in #StLouis

This cutie pie is Sammy.  She's a 2 1/2 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix.  Sammy is spayed, sits nicely for treats and seems to be housebroken.  She walks well on a leash and loves to play. Those ears are pretty irresistible!

Take a look at Sammy's adoption video and then contact the Humane Society of Missouri's St Louis City animal shelter at 314-951-1562.  Sammy's animal ID number is A594141

Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances.  They provide a safe and caring haven to animals - large and small - that have been abused, neglected or abandoned.  Their mission is to end the cycle of abuse and overpopulation, assist in creating lasting relations hips between people and animals, offer world-class veterinary care, plus offer pet obedience and behavior programs.

HSMO operates three animal shelters in the St Louis, Missouri, area, plus Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri, for abused and neglected horses, cows, goats, chickens and other farm animals.

We are participating in the Tuesday's Tails blog hop hosted by Dogs N Pawz and Talking Dogs.  This is the blog hop that features shelter pets.  Find a pet at your local animal shelter or rescue and join us!  Please help spread the word about these beautiful animals via social media and let's find them forever homes!
