Ignorance Meant Bliss | Rosie and her Wisdom Panel DNA Results

I found Rosie on Petfinder.  At the time her name was "Puppy" and there were no photos, merely the description:  black Golden Retriever 7 week old puppy.  That's it.  (And if you click that "Puppy" you'll be taken to puppy photos of Rosie.)

As in the case of Rita and Jackie, had Rosie been labeled as another breed of dog, it is very likely she would not have become a member of our family.

So, I have to be grateful to the volunteers at the animal shelter for totally blowing the dog breed.  They blew it big time, but their ignorance meant bliss for us.

I decided to do a Wisdom Panel DNA test on Rosie to help us prepare for possible health issues in her life and, frankly, just for fun.  It did turn out to be fun.  We've had her results for over a week and can't stop laughing about them.

Our funny little Rosie has a strange body build.  Delicate legs; bowed back legs.  She's short and barrel chested.  Relatively large body for her legs and her little head!
Can you see the bow in her back legs?

From time to time, I've wondered(like Sandra and Dolly) if she didn't have some Dachshund.  Her snoot reminds me so much of my mom's standard Doxie, Hansel.  She certainly likes to dig.
With her short legs and long body, in high grass Rosie looked like a Doxie to me.
I've also wondered about various Terrier breeds as some of you have suggested.  Plus, given her odd body build and obsession with food, JoAnn wasn't far off the mark in her guess:  piggie.

Lab, sure. We'll go with that, too.

The shelter insisted, rather vehemently, that Rosie's mother was a Golden Retriever.  As I shared last Wednesday, Rosie is absolutely NOT a Golden Retriever.

I'll give them this:  if Rosie's mama looked like these two dogs, I can see why someone would say Golden Retriever.  Both Flynn and Huey are Akita / Lab mixes and part of the Wisdom Panel Community.

Yes, Rosie is part Akita and part Labrador Retriever.  She's also part Smooth Fox Terrier and so much more!

One of Rosie's parents

Rosie's Other Parent

From now on, when you hear "Heinz 57," think of Rosie.  You have to look back to Rosie's great grandparents to find pure bred dogs  Rosie's genetic make up:   12.5% Akita, 12.5% Labrador Retriever, and 12.5% Smooth Fox Terrier.

Honestly, we see zero similarities between Rosie and the Akita dog breed profile provided by the Wisdom Panel people nor the AKC profile.  Though her short (and bowed back) legs and proportionally small head don't agree, we recognize many of the Labrador Retriever physical and personality traits in Rosie.

The big surprise (to us) was the Smooth Fox Terrier. However when reading the breed traits our heads are bobbing up and down in recognition.  Definitely an "Ah ha" moment.  Intelligent, agile, energetic, watchful, quick learner - check.  Digging, hunting wildlife, tenacious - check.  She also has the Smooth Fox Terrier stance.

So now you're probably wondering about that other 62.5%, right?   The Wisdom Panel folks state that though it is difficult to identify strong breed signals in this mixed portion, the 5 dog breeds with the strongest statistical likelihood in their analysis of Rosie's DNA are: Dogue de Bordeaux, Belgian Tervuren, French Bulldog, Basset Hound, and Shetland Sheepdog.

What a stew of dog breeds!

As I said before, we've been laughing quite a bit about these results.  Rosie now has a new nickname:  Little Akita.    And yes, she answers to it!  I wish my mom was still alive to enjoy Rosie's Smooth Fox Terrier heritage, since mom's heart dog was one of these wonderful dogs.

The bottom line?  Not very helpful in managing Rosie's health.  Lots of laughs and fun.   And really, who cares.  We love our girl, no matter what dog breeds combined to make this marvelous mutt we call Rosie!

Reminder:  Be sure to enter our September giveaway!  You could be the lucky winner of this copper dog bone and lampwork bead bracelet!

Adopt Koda a Lab Shepherd Mix Dog at Wayside Waifs in Kansas City

UPDATE:  KODA HAS BEEN ADOPTED! (10/7/14)

This adorable boy is Koda.  He's a 15 months old Labrador Retriever / German shepherd mix.  In spite of living almost his whole life in the shelter, Koda full of life and house broken.  He's still got lots of puppy energy and would love to share adventures with a special person.

Here's his adoption letter:
Hello there! I'm Koda and I am one precious dog, searching for my forever home. Why does it have to be so hard to find you? Why didn't I get a home when I was just a cute puppy with so much of life ahead of me? Well, I can't worry about that now. I've spent most of my young life in a shelter, but that has allowed me to make many friends and learn lots of things about life. My past made me the amazing dog I am today, so who can say that's a bad thing? I look forward, with faith and hope, that my forever family will find me soon!
I am a super handsome, 1 year old, 55 pound, mostly housetrained, Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd mix. I am soft and adorable and so much fun! I think I'm still growing into my long and lanky legs and I'm quite an athlete. I came to Wayside from the shelter in Topeka, KS, where I had lived since I was a pup. It's hard growing up in a shelter, but I had many people who loved me very much. Once I got to Wayside, I quickly became a volunteer favorite! I'm friendly and social. And you won't find a dog who is better than me at the game of fetch! I am an expert at it and I never tire of playing.
Since finding my way to Wayside, life has sort of been a whirlwind for me. I was adopted for about a month and I've spent some time in a foster home, too. So I've finally had my first taste of a normal life in a home. My family that adopted me had many great things to say about me! For one, I absolutely adored them to the point where I wanted to be by their side at all times. They lived on a rural piece of property without a fence, but I never once ran away. I always liked to be where I could see them.

Besides being an expert at fetch, I'm also a perfect running partner and went running 4 or 5 times a week. I loved it! I also loved going to the dog park and was always polite and respectful of the other dogs. I'm smart, treat motivated, and I love to learn new things, so I'm an excellent candidate for training. I already know 'sit', 'stay', and 'down', but I'd love to learn more, so please teach me! One of my other favorite things it to go for rides in the car and I quietly curl up in the backseat when traveling.
So, as you can probably tell, I'm an excellent companion in so many ways. My problem in my last home is that I didn't like to be left alone. It took me so long to finally find my people that I was afraid to let them go! When they left me alone, I was worried that they wouldn't come back. They tried to crate me and that made me feel even more anxious, so I would panic and try to figure my way out of the crate. Wayside staff thinks I'll do best in a home with another dog, who can help me relax and learn that things are ok when we're alone. And I don't like to be confined to a crate, so I hope I never have to go through that again!

I can't get enough of my people. I love to sit with you and listen to you talk and feel your gentle touch on my fur. I like to exercise with you and watch TV with you and just hang out. We can do whatever you feel like, but I would love to go home with someone who is around a lot. It makes me feel comforted and safe when I am with you. I'm such a good boy! I'm friendly and laid back and polite. It's just that I never felt wanted before, so now I try so hard to always be by your side, making you happy. I feel like that's my job and I worry when we're not together. I will gain confidence over time though, with positive reinforcement and praise from you.

Once I know I am home for good and that you love having me as part of your family, it will help me to relax. I hope you can give me the feeling of safety and peace that has been so elusive to me. I hope we will become best friends and stay together forever. Love, Koda

To Everyone Who Loves Dogs Music Video | Dog Song Saturday

I know, Dog Song Saturday really is supposed to be about dog songs.  However, once in awhile we find a music video we just can't resist sharing with you.

If you love dogs, you're going to love this wonderful video from Dog Work.  Fabulous video clips of all kinds and breeds of dogs and puppies are accompanied by the song More Than a Feeling by Boston.

I just can't even decided what my favorites are - the swimming underwater dogs, the black Lab leaping into a pond, or... the puppies.  Lots of puppies!

Dog Work created this music video to encourage shelter pet adoption.  If I didn't already have three dogs, I'd be at the shelter now.  That's how good this video is!

So sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy To Everyone Who Loves Dogs. Then fetch some more dog songs at Talking Dogs.  You'll be surprised how many barking good original songs about dogs and music videos we've collected over the years.

Copper Dog Bone Jewelry Bracelets at For Love of a Dog

Since my September jewelry giveaway is one of my copper dog bone bracelets, I thought it would be a good time to feature some more of my copper dog bone jewelry.

Each of these bracelets is one of a kind and includes a beautiful two dimensional flamed copper dog bone focal.  Gorgeous warm colors like a vivid sunset comes from the heat of the flame:  shades of pink and orange.  Each one is a little bit different.

The bracelet shown at top emphasizes the beautiful pinks, from soft rose to hot raspberry.  In fact, the faceted crystal rondelle beads I used are a soft, mellow rose color and coordinate nicely with the hand selected artisan lampwork beads.  This bracelet is hand wire wrapped with copper jeweler's wire.

I adore the deep cherry rose blossom handmade lampwork beads in the dog bone bracelet shown above.  The copper dog bone has the addition of some raised golden "bumps," so I hand wire wrapped these beads with gold jeweler's wire,. Then I added a sweet little gold heart and a gold dog collar and bone toggle clasp.

This confection (shown below) makes me think of pink lemonade and cotton candy.  Sweet shades of pink with some yellow, too.

Not all my copper dog bone jewelry is necessarily girly bling.  The bracelet shown below is simple and unisex, you could even say it has a grunge flavor.  Basic black onyx gemstone beads surround the focal and are hand wired wrapped with copper jeweler's wire.  Then I added a little copper heart which I hand stamped: DOG.

Fetch my handmade dog bone jewelry and you'll find other variations of bracelets including these wonderful copper dog bones.  Well, and other kinds of dog bones, too!   They make perfect gifts for dog lovers.

And be sure to enter the September Giveaway!

Cop a Feel of Your Dog and Gratitude | Barks and Bytes

Rudy is home now, but still anxious from his surgery.

Barks
Even if you cop of feel of your dog every day, life can still throw you a curve ball.

If you follow me or For Love of a Dog on Facebook, or read my blog earlier this week, you know that Rudy had some surgery Monday morning.

When my dog Benji was diagnosed with cancer so many years ago, I became obsessed with "feeling up" and examining my dogs daily for lumps and bumps. After all, early detection can make the difference between life or death.

Sometimes that's not even enough.  Last week, on Wednesday, there was no sign of anything worrisome on Rudy's body.   Friday night he had a lump the size of a golf ball on one side of his penis.

A call to the vet on Saturday morning found my vet overwhelmed with emergence surgeries.  After some conversation, we all assumed this was probably a hernia.  Rudy was scheduled for an 8 am appointment on Monday.  He fasted in preparation for tests.

Good thing he fasted.

Our vet took one good feel and said:  Lipoma.  Normally, he would aspirate and wait for lab work to decide on treatment.  Due to the location and size, he said surgery.  And since Rudy had fasted, he agreed to do the surgery immediately.

The very good news is that the tumor was a Lipoma - a totally encapsulated fatty tumor.  Rudy should be a-okay.  Truthfully, I don't think I would have been so freaked out if this thing hadn't happened almost overnight.  But it did.  And I was.

The outcome could have been very different.  If you don't already check your dog for unusual lumps or bumps, you should.  Make it part of your daily routine.  Your dog will love the handy-hands massage and it will give you some peace of mind.
The dreaded cone - a necessary evil overnight. You can see how thrilled Rudy is about this development.  Not to mention Jeffie won't go near him when he's wearing it.
Rudy is doing very well in his recovery.  He hates the cone, but it is a necessary evil for overnight.  Poor Rudy - his brother, Jeffie, is afraid of it.  He even barked once last night and made Rudy feel even worse.  Rosie isn't afraid of the cone, but Rudy is disappointed that his sister can't help him get the dog-gone thing OFF!

Bytes
I don't often share personal news and information on the internet.  However, when I got what was a sucker punch of a shock, I did include it in my Monday Mischief blog post and I shared my situation on Facebook.

While I waited for my vet to call with a surgery update, I read the responses with tears in my eyes.  Happy tears because of all the caring and love from my friends.  Wow.   It made some very stressful hours so much easier to bear. Thank you so much for the support.

Umm... Nope!

We got Rosie's DNA results.
I'll be sharing them soon.

This dog bone bracelet is hand wire wrapped with copper jeweler's wire.  The clasp is a copper lobster claw clasp.  I just had to add a sweet antiqued copper heart dangle.

More mischief...
While you're reading this on Monday, Rudy will be at the vet.  Friday night I discovered a large soft lump on Rudy's abdomen. He shows no sign of it bothering him or of any illness.   Our vet was in emergency surgeries all day today (Saturday), so Rudy will see him at 8 a.m. on Monday.  Would appreciate some good thoughts sent Rudy's way.

Update As I write this update (Monday 9:15 am) Rudy is in surgery.  Though our vet suspects Rudy's tumor is a Lipoma, because of its size and location he recommended removal.  We won't have the biopsy results for about a week.  On Wednesday I could not see or feel a thing.  Friday evening I couldn't miss the almost golf ball size lump next to his penis.  Rudy will have to stay at the vets as long as he has a drain in the surgical site.  I'll know more when he comes out of surgery.

Adopt Sophie a Senior Harrier Hound Dog in Missouri

This pretty girl is Sophie.  She's an 8 year old senior tricolor Harrier dog.  Sophie walks very nicely on a leash.  She'd would love a family that took her for walks so she could sniff, explore and enjoy the outdoors.  Sophie is a friendly, gentle girl who just needs somebody to love.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Harrier is a scent hound developed in England to hunt hare in packs.  Though Harriers are a smaller version of the English Foxhound, they are still a sturdy, large-boned dog.  Harriers excel in tracking and agility.  Outgoing and friendly, Harriers are pack dogs.  They get along well with other animals and are very people oriented.  Very intelligent, Harriers can be easily trained.

Take a look at Sophie's adoption video and then give the Humane Society of Missouri at call at 636-530-0805.  Sophie is at their Chesterfield Valley animal shelter and her animal ID number is A471494.

Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances.  They provide a safe and caring haven to animals - large and small - that have been abused, neglected or abandoned.  Their mission is to end the cycle of abuse and overpopulation, assist in creating lasting relations hips between people and animals, offer world-class veterinary care, plus offer pet obedience and behavior programs.  HSMO operates three animal shelters in the St Louis, Missouri, area, plus Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri, for abused and neglected horses, cows, goats, chickens and other farm animals.

My dogs love it when UPS pulls down our lane.  Not only does it give Jeffie yet another chance to scare that guy in brown, but the dogs are always quite sure the delivery is for them.  Of course, it isn't, but at this point I sometimes wonder if they recognize a certain kind of box.

The ones from Chewy.com, of course!

Adopt Butler a Senior Lab Pit Bull Mix Dog in Kansas City

This handsome fellow is Butler.  He's a mostly Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog currently calling Wayside Waifs animal shelter home where staff believe there might be some Pit Bull Terrier, too.  Regardless of the breeds, Butler is a sweet boy who needs a forever home.  At over 7 year old, Butler is a senior dog, but he still has a lot of living to do.

Here's his adoption message:
Hello there, I'm Butler! I am a happy, sweet, loving dog, just searching for a brand new home to call my own. I hope maybe you will be my new family. I hope we will find each other and celebrate many happy years together as best friends and loyal companions. I need you in my life and hope you need me too.

I am a handsome, 7 year old, 51 pounds of pure sweetness, Lab mix. Staff thinks I might have a little Pit Bull Terrier as part of my mix, but it's hard to say. Whatever my heritage, I'm proud of the wonderful dog I am. I'm beautiful, both inside and out, with a lovely chocolaty color fur. And besides my good looks, I can't wait to show you my incredible personality and zest for life. Did you notice my adoption fee is half price, because of my senior status? I hope you won't pass me by because of my age though, because age is just a number and I've got lots of living left to do! In fact, I have some lost time to make up for. I think I had sort of a tough life so far, so I hope I will be spoiled and doted on in my new home.
I came to Wayside as a stray from Grandview, MO, and my owner was contacted, but never came for me. I imagine he misses me and I'm sure there's a good reason that he didn't come. Maybe he thought a new family is what I need in my life right now. In any case, I've forgiven him and am now ready to move on with my wonderful life. I seem to be at least partially housetrained, because I keep my kennel clean and try my best to hold it until I get outside. Please be patient with me though, when we get home, as I get used to my new routine with you. I'm already a volunteer favorite! They love my gentle and calm spirit and they think I am one pretty special dog! I walk just perfectly on my leash, right by your side, so proud to be with you. And I love to get out in the fresh air. I'm a friendly and social dog who loves to be near my people.
I'm treat motivated and very smart, so training me is a cinch. I already know how to sit, which I am happy to do, especially if you have a tasty treat. I do have sort of a hard mouth and sometimes I grab for my treat, but I'm working on that and it's an easy thing to teach me to take my treats gently. I love to learn and love to make you happy, so please teach me and show me when I do something you like, so that I can repeat my good behavior! In general, I like other dogs just fine and I'm appropriate in my play, but if you do have another, I'd love to meet them before we go home, to see how we do together. Same with all the people in the family. I'll probably be happiest in a home without kids under the age of 5, and I want to meet the whole family, please.

I'm a people pleasing, happy go lucky, tail wagging sort of dog who loves to be by your side. What more can you ask for? I will make such a wonderful addition to your life, if you'll just give me a chance. Please, I'm waiting for you now and am so ready for our new life together to begin.
Love, Butler

Take a look at Butler's adoption video and you'll see why Love Is In The Air is a perfect song for him.  Then give Wayside Waifs a call at 816-761-8151.  Butler's animal ID number is 22826602.  Remember, since Butler is a senior his adoption fee is half price!
