Wordless Wednesday: Hailey is Home

After I blogged about Hailey and her situation, I was stunned to receive the next newsletter from Dogwood and see that Hailey still was waiting for a forever home.    I immediately sent an SOS email to Neil over at Life With Dogs.  Hailey's story broke his heart, too, as I knew it would.  I gave him permission to rip any info he wanted from my blog and sent him the Dogwood newsletters, too.

I'm thrilled to report that social media really worked for Hailey.  As reported on Life With Dogs, late last week an anonymous man took Hailey home.  He's reported that other than a bit of anxiety at times, she's settling into her new home well.

Dogwood Animal Shelter was overwhelmed with correspondence from around the world and Hailey's new best friend was selected from a list of applicants.

Thanks to all of you who forwarded, StumbledUpon, shared on Facebook, Twitter, and so on!  And I have no doubt that Hailey thanks you, too.

Adopt Piper a Black Lab German Shepherd Mix Dog

I had to chuckle when I first watched this dog video of Piper.  The folks at the Humane Society of Missouri animal shelter - where Piper is living now - wanted to edit out the portion where Piper gets excited.  Personally, I liked it.

Piper reminds me so much of our late, beloved boy, Tucker, that I hope he finds a forever home asap!  Piper is a black Labrador Retriever / German Shepherd Dog mix who is about 13 months old.  He walks nicely on a leash, prefers to relieve himself while out on those walks, too.  He knows how to sit and takes treats gently.

If you have room in your heart and home for a new furry friend, please consider adopting Piper.  Contact the Humane Society of Missouri for more information about Piper or any number of other dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Dog Song Saturday: A Dog Named Mo

Saturday means its time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  Today's dog song video is A Dog Named Mo', an original song written and performed by David Kesler.  Kesler says he got Moses (Mo for short) in 2000 from the Berkeley Humane Society and he's a sweet, big, black dog.

This dog song is sweet, too, and accompanied by video footage of Moses.  Mo reminds me so much of our late, beloved, black boy, Tucker.  If you've ever loved a big black dog with a long nose, you're gonna love this.

You know the drill.  Grab a dog!  Any dog will do, but a big black dog would be extra good.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy A Dog Named Mo.  If it puts you in the mood, fetch more dog song videos at Talking Dogs.  Be sure to scroll down below the video to check out some barking good dog blogs because today is a Pet Blogger Hop!

Missouri Puppy Mill Shut Down in Verona

Photo: KMOX CBS St.Louis
According to KMOX news in St Louis and the Humane Society of Missouri, another puppy mill has been shut down.  Animal care inspectors from the Missouri Department of Agriculture removed 18 dogs from Charles Etenburn's commercial dog breeding facility, C E Kennel on Monday, April 16

Etenburn had repeatedly failed recent inspections by the MDA and was unable to meet the requirements of the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act for kennel space, flooring and unfettered access to the outside.

The dogs included Pekingese, Poodles, Havanese/Shih Tzu, Labradoodle and French Bulldogs. One of the dogs is blind.  Several of the dogs appeared to have eye problems and matted coats.  The HSMO also reported that some of the dogs had severe skin infections.  As soon as they are healthy, as many of the dogs as possible will be made available for adoption.
Debbie Hill, HSMO VP Operations with matted Labradoodle. Photo: KMOX CBS St.Louis
This is a commercial dog breeder who has had problems with state officials previously.  In March he entered into a settlement agreement with MDA and the Missouri Attorney General's Office and agreed to close his facility after not renewing is license in 2012.  On April 13, Etenburn agreed to surrender his animals.

Etenburn must now refrain from owning or operating any business subject to the Animal Care Facilities Act and the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act for 10 years and pay a $500 fine.  He is also subject to an additional $2,850 fine if he violates those terms.

Since January 2009, similar action taken by the Missouri Department of Agriculture have resulted in more than 5,600 dogs being removed from substandard conditions and placed with licensed animal shelters and rescue organizations..

Adopt Cash a Labrador Retriever Dog

Look at that face and tell me you don't want to adopt this dog!  Cash is a 4 year old Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog.  He walks nicely on a leash and loves going for long walks and making new friends.  Cash has a very friendly personality and just loves meeting new people.

Cash is a smart guy, too!  He's already learned some basic commands and would love to take an obedience class to learn more in his new home.  Cash would make a great addition to any active family.

Right now this dog is living at the Humane Society of Missouri Chesterfield Valley animal shelter.  For more information call 636-530-0806.  Cash's animal identification number is A526426

Dog Song Saturday: Big Black Dog with Emmylou Harris

It's Dog Song Saturday at Talking Dogs and you do not want to miss Big Black Dog, written and performed by Emmylou HarrisBig Black Dog is the story of Bella, Emmylou Harris' own Bella, a big black dog that she rescued from an animal shelter.

Today's dog music video includes not only Emmylou's performance of Big Black Dog, but also her story of founding her dog rescue organization, Bonaparte's Retreat, named for the dog who was her traveling companion for eleven years.

Bonaparte's Retreat is dedicated to providing nurturing foster care for shelter dogs when their allotted time at the animal shelter has elapsed, to prevent them from being euthanized, and to find them loving forever homes.  Emmylou Harris created Bonaparte's Retreat to rescue dogs who were unadoptable from the Nashville Humane Association and has evolved into rescuing dogs who have run out of time at Metro Nashville Animal Control.

Love the song, Big Black Dog?  You can find it on Emmylou Harris' album Hard Bargain.

Grab a dog and a tissue or two.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Big Black Dog.  Then fetch more dog songs and videos at Talking Dogs and have a barking good weekend!

Andy The Little Rat Dog House Guest

Today we have another guest post from the Dog Daddy at our house:

Dorothy's Dog - Andy

Readers of this blog may have noticed that it has not been as active as usual lately. Sue’s mother, Dorothy, has experienced some health problems and is now in rehab preparing to be able to return to her home.

Those of you who have been through such an experience will understand. For those of you who have not, there is no way to relate it in a single blog post. I will just say that blogging is just one of many things in our lives which have been impacted.

As Sue told you in an earlier post, Dorothy’s dog, Andy, a Lhasa Apso, has come to live with us for awhile. This has been a real adventure for all of us, especially for Andy.

Having been a city dog all his life, he has never known the joy of being free in the yard without a leash. At first he wouldn’t leave the back porch without me leading the way.  Now he goes out alone.  He slowly maneuvers down the steps, does his business and explores the world going a little further each day.

With a 2 acre yard that’s a lot to explore.

Andy only has one eye.  Unfortunately he's nearly blind in that eye.  His exploring is a slow process, but fascinating to watch. Sometimes he will get to the other side of the house and can’t find his way back. I call him, and keep calling him, so he can follow my voice back to the back porch.

One day he got lost in the yard and found Sue’s For Love of a Dog Jewelry studio, which borders the back yard.  He found the studio porch and it's door and was sitting there waiting to be let in. When I called to him he realized his mistake and followed my voice back to the house.

So far we have kept Andy separated from our dogs as he has a“little man’s complex” and Jeffie does not like a strange dog in his house. Rudy, however, is fascinated.  He stands at the baby gate which keeps Andy in the mud room and studies him.

I think that at this point Rudy has finally figured out that Andy is a dog, just a very strange little fellow. We think the two of them would get along okay but Rudy is still very much a rousting puppy. Andy is old and has mobility problems so we are afraid he could get hurt. When Andy goes out to explore the yard, Rudy goes from window to window to try and keep an eye on him.

We talk to our dogs a lot and we always end up giving them numerous play names. Andy is now known as Andyman, Little Dog, the One Eyed Wonder and Little Rat Dog. Sue says I shouldn’t call him Rat Dog because I could give him a complex.

I think it is a fitting name. With Jeffie and Rudy both weighing around 100 lbs. and Andy weighing about 20 lbs. Andy is pretty much like a little rat!

We love dogs and believe that all dogs deserve the best care possible, so we will continue to give that to Andy.  At the same time, we're looking forward to Andy's return to his own home and dog mama.  And I'm sure the Little Rat Man feels the same way!

Wordless Wednesday: A Dog Treat Begging Pro

Jeffie is an excellent role model for Rudy and Rudy's caught on to many of Jeffie's dog treat begging techniques.  However, as you can see from the photo above, Rudy still lacks Jeffie's consistent, intent focus.  Look at that face.  Is there any doubt in your mind that Jeffie is willing the person to award a treat or two?

Tasty Tuesday Pet Product Review: YumZies Grain Free Dog Treats

One of our reviewers.
At Talking Dogs, we're big fans of Mr. Chewy, the online pet food retailer.

So, when Mr. Chewy contacted us to see if we'd like to review a new dog treat called YumZies, we jumped at the chance.  [read our full review of Mr. Chewy here.]

YumZies is a grain free, soft - moist dog treat made in the United States by Nootie.

YumZies are made with real chicken, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and natural flavors.  YumZies contain no wheat, corn, or soy and are easily digestible.  They also contain no artificial preservatives or flavors.

YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor - Ingredients:
Chicken, Potato Flour, Pea Powder, Tapioca Starch, Glycerin, Fish Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Pea Flour, Natural Flavor, Salt, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Natural Bacon Flavor, Lecithin, Garlic Powder, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Phosphoric Acid, Ginger Powder, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Bisulfate, Cultured Dextrose, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Citric Acid (preservative), Rosemary Extract.

YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor - Guaranteed Analysis:

As always, we received super fast delivery from Mr. Chewy and our package of YumZies arrived well packed for shipping.  YumZies are attractively packaged and we like that the first ingredient is real chicken, as well as that there are no grains in this dog treat.
Rudy and Jeffie examined the packaging and pronounced it barking good!
When we ripped open the YumZies bag, the humans at our house were not too keen with the smell of the treats, but the dogs were definitely thrilled.  YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor Treats definitely passed the dog taste test.
Our cautious Golden Retriever, Jeffie, carefully took the first taste test of YumZies.
We'd rate YumZies dog treats as excellent for their natural ingredients, grain free, preservative free recipe.  We especially like that YumZies are manufactured in the USA.  YumZies dog treats come in 6 ounce bags with a built in zipper to keep them fresh.  Price is $6.99 per bag.

Our dogs love YumZies!
Rudy eagerly waits his turn for another YumZies dog treat.
Our yellow Labrador Retriever, Rudy, was very excited to try a new dog treat!
Mr. Chewy carries a full line of YumZies dog treats in several flavors:   YumZies Hickory Bacon Flavor (which we tried), YumZies Cheese Flavor, Yumzies Peanut Butter Flavor, and YumZies Barbecue Chicken Flavor.  They're also available in Mini - training size treats.

Random Thoughts: Mothers Hospitals Dogs and House Guests

Andy - Guest Dog at For Love of a Dog
We have a house guest.  Andy is my mother's dog and he's been staying with us since she was rushed to the hospital on March 14.  While we've been enriching the oil companies by traveling the interstate back and forth between our farm and the hospital, as well as our farm and my mother's home, the dogs have been ... well, waiting.

Waiting and hoping life will return to normal.  Soon.

I can relate.  I just wish I had the patience of a dog.  The time to nap would be welcome, too.

The dogs are doing a whole lot of napping and very little flying disc or Jolly Ball exercise.  They, of course, know something strange has happened and they offer comfort whenever they can.  Comic relief, too.

They also know there's a very strange critter in their house.  Andy.

My mother's dog, Andy, is a 12 year old Lhasa Apso.  At least, that's what his registration papers say.  He sure looks like a Shih Tzu to me.  Believed to be a Missouri puppy mill survivor, he has a long list of health problems.  Not only does he have megaesophagus, Andy has lost one eye and is almost blind in the other.  In addition, he has some locomotion difficulties that are most likely neurological.

Andy is a money pit and the apple of my mother's eye.

Normally this king of my mother's castle spends his days in my mother's lap, takes walks on a leash, and spends his nights in a very cushy bed.  These days he's spending his life in our mudroom with a crate at night.

And he's having some big adventures.  These adventures will be detailed later this week by the dog daddy at our house.  Among them are his encounters with "the big dogs" at our house, getting lost in the yard, and discovering there's a world off-leash.

In the meantime, Andy is safe behind the baby gate.  Safe because he has "small man's complex."  No shirker, he's ready to attack and defend.. against the very curious canines on the other side of that baby gate.  Ready for his next adventure which is sure to bring smiles to our faces.

Dogs.  Gotta love 'em.

Dog Scouts of America

Photo: Dog Scouts of America
Badges, camp outs, cookie drives, troops.  Sounds like Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, right?  Wrong!  It's the Dog Scouts of America!

Founded in 1995 by Lonnie Olson, the Dog Scouts of America (DSA) is a non-profit organization of people who are dedicated to enriching their own lives and the lives of others with dogs.

The Dog Scout Owner's Motto:  Our dog's lives are much shorter than ours - let's help them enjoy their time with us as much as we can.

Any dog can become a Dog Scout.  The only requirement is that the dog and owner must be able to pass a test proving the owner is responsible and the dog is well mannered and not a danger toward humans and other dogs.  Members are encouraged to pursue badge activities either within a troop or on their own.

Some Dog Scouts pursue backpacking and add miles toward their backpacking titles.  Many Dog Scouts become involved in civic activities like waking in charity walk-a-thons, creating fundraising events for charity, and do pet therapy visits.  And, yes, Dog Scouts go camping at their own Dog Scout camp.

Dog Scout Badges can be earned in many different activities including: Trails, Water, Agility, Obedience, Nose Work, Pulling, Community, and more.

Adopt a Blue Smoke Weimaraner Dog

Yesterday's dog song at Talking Dogs was Old Blue by The Byrds, so it just seems right to feature this beautiful blue girl today.  Lady is a blue smoke Weimaraner.  She's about 2 1/2 years old and currently living at the Humane Society of Missouri animal shelter in Chesterfield Valley.

Lady walks pretty nicely on a leash and is a very friendly girl.  She is probably housebroken because she prefers to relieve herself outdoors.  Lady takes treats gently and is even learning to sit for them.

If you have room in your heart and home, please consider adopting this gorgeous blue smoke Weimaraner dog.

For more information about Lady, contact the HSMO at 636-530-0805.  Lady's animal ID number is A526383
