Pit Bull Dog Art Exhibit: Stray Rescue's Urban Wanderers

The Urban Wanderers art exhibit at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art puts a new spin on the image of Pit Bulls.  According to Randy Grim, the organizer of the event, this art show is about dispelling the myth of the Pit Bull.  "Everybody has these preconceived notions.  Actually at the turn of the century they were used for nanny dogs," he said.

The artwork in the exhibit depicts dogs that Grim and his team have saved, or attempted to, through Stray Rescue of St Louis organization.  Dogs are not only the subject of the paintings, photographs and sculptures, in some cases they are the artists.

Admission to the exhibit is free.  The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is located at 3633 Lindell Blvd in St Louis.

Bids are being taken online for the artwork until the end of August.  Head on over to Stray Rescue and bid.  Proceeds will go to Stray Rescue and help them continue to rescue abandoned and abused dogs.  You can also read more about Randy Grim and his efforts to rescue the homeless dogs of St Louis in our Talking Dogs blog post.

Dog Song Saturday: Letter to My Dog

It's Saturday!  Time for a dog song from For Love of a Dog!  Today's selection is technically not really a song about dogs.  However, A Little More of You, performed by Ashley Chambliss on her album Nakedsongs, is a lovely song about needing just a little more time.  As pet lovers, we've certainly all felt that way.  At least I know I have.

A Little More of You accompanies a video letter written by a veterinarian.  Jessica Braun, DVM composed this letter to her dog, a rescued black Labrador Retriever, Stoupie Braun.  I won't say more because I don't want to spoil it for you.

Grab a dog.  More than one if you can.  Grab a box of tissues.  Yes, a box, because you'll need more than one.  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy A Letter to My Dog.  Breathe a little.  Cuddle with those dogs.  Take a moment to remember some old friends.

Then scroll down below the video to surf some barking good dog blogs because today is a Pet Blog Hop.  And they're sure to cheer you up!

New Retriever Dog Lover Necklaces

Shown here is a necklace with a retriever dog pendant hand carved from solid tigerseye gemstone.  This pendant is large, stunning, and really makes a statement.  I've teamed it with faceted tigereye gemstone beads by hand wrapping gold jeweler's wire into a chain.

This retriever dog pendant could easily represent your Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever or even a number of the Spaniel and Setter dog breeds.  Browse For Love of a Dog for your special dog breed, but be sure to also take a look at our Mutt Jewelry category for some incredible dog lover jewelry pieces.  Great dog lover gifts await you!

Missouri Puppy Mill Shut Down: Linda Brisco's Moser Kennel

The puppy mill shut down in Missouri yesterday is Moser Kennel.  Owned and operated by Linda Brisco in Lawrence County, Missouri.  She is the first dog breeder to be prosecuted under Missouri's Proposition B changes for violating the law.

Briso is charged with allowing excess build up of feces on flooring surfaces, allowing water sources to become dirty, and failing to keep sick, aged or young dogs indoors.  She's also accused of not allowing adequate veterinarian visits.  Brisco also failed to provide adequate shade for animals, as well as housing that protected the animals from injury.

On June 28, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster obtained a restraining order stopping Brisco from operating the business and allowing the Department of Agriculture to inspect the dogs on her property in preparation for trial.

Missouri Puppy Mills: New Law Shuts Down Dog Breeder in Monett

 According to the Humane Society of Missouri, the first bad dog breeder has been shut down thanks to Missouri's new cruelty prevention law.

Seventy-three dogs were rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force from a dog breeding facility in Monett (Lawrence County) Missouri.  Dogs included Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, American Eskimos, Poodles, Beagles, Papillons and Brussels Griffons.  These dogs were living in cramped, dirty, unsafe cages, often outside with no access to shade or protection from the sweltering heat due to the neglect of this dog breeder.

Under the new Canine Cruelty Prevention Act and with the join efforts of the Office of the Missouri Attorney General, the Missouri Department of Agriculture and HSMO, this commercial dog breeder is no longer in business.  According to Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, this rescue is just the beginning of efforts leading to a significant improvement of Missouri's dog breeding reputation.

According to inspections by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, this dog breeding facility:
  • failed to provide adequate veterinary care to animals in obvious medical distress;
  • failed to clean and sanitize the facility, allowing excrement in food receptacles and dirty, muddy drinking water;
  • failed to keep sick, aged, or young animals in indoor or sheltered housing facilities;
  • failed to equip housing facilities with disposal and drainage systems in order to keep animal waste and water eliminated so the animals stayed dry;
  • failed to provide shade for the dogs;
  • failed to collect and remove animal waste – in some places feces had accumulated to the point that it was indistinguishable from the flooring; and
  • failed to provide housing that protected the animals from injury.
In addition, the owner routinely used a gunshot as a means of euthanasia, also in violation of the law.

In an agreement approved July 14 and enforceable under the circuit court, the owner will surrender all animals to the Humane Society of Missouri, surrender her Missouri Department of Agriculture commercial breeder license and will not operate a dog breeding facility for at least the next 6 years.

The rescued animals were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri's Headquarters for individual veterinary exams and treatment.  As soon as  they are healthy, as many of them as possible will be made available for adoption.

I Won The Versatile Blogger Award

Thank you so much to Nanny McFur for bestowing me with a Versatile Blogger Award!

Before I pass along this award to some other bloggers, I'm supposed to tell you 7 things about myself.  Okay, here goes.
  1. We eat healthy:  no processed foods.  We garden organically and cook from scratch.
  2. We live in a sort of working museum (translation:  I collect antiques)  some of my favorite vintage finds are canine or equine themed, including a nice collection of dog and horse bookends.
  3. I am a voracious reader.  When I was in 3rd grade I challenged myself to read every single book in my elementary school library.  I did.  Alphabetically.
  4. I grew up in the suburbs of a major city, but found my heart belongs in the country.  We now live on a farm in the Missouri Ozarks.
  5. I'm fascinated by history and years ago began genealogy research.  As a result I traveled to Russia, located a cousin who'd been exiled to Siberia and was able to visit he and his family.  I also found out that my husband and I are 6th cousins thanks to a marriage in 1796 Virginia!
  6. Gary and I have restored several historic homes including a 1905  shirtwaist, a 1920's farmhouse, and a 1750 Virginia plantation manor house.  We currently live in a house that we built ourselves, though we just might have one more restoration in our future.
  7. Though this began as Tucker's blog, and I talk more about Jeffie and puppy, Rudy...  Lucy is my heart dog.
Now, on to more important business - the new winners of the Versatile Blogger Award.  I've chosen 7 winners.  Rather than selecting my favorite blogs, I decided to pass on my award to blogs that are somewhat new to me.  So, in no particular order, please join me in congratulating:

Team Beaglebratz

I invite these bloggers to have some fun exploring the blogosphere to bestow their award on new winners.  Please let me know when you pass it along, so I'll get to hear who your choices are, while knowing that you've had a chance to enjoy your time as a winner.

Help Joplin Tornado Pets With One Click

You can help the hundreds of pets left homeless by the May 22 Joplin tornado simply by one little click of your mouse.

Philanthropist and American Dog Rescue founder, Arthur Benjamin has announced that for every "Like" that the American Dog Rescue page on Facebook, his foundation will donate a dollar to the Missouri Humane Society - part of which will go directly to the Joplin Humane Society.  Benjamin will donate up to $10,000 through his foundantions.The money will go directly to help care for the animals.

“The disasters that struck Joplin and the surrounding areas in Missouri were devastating,” said Benjamin. “And while immediate efforts were made on the ground to rescue animals in danger, to recover lost animals, and to reunite families with their pets, there is still so much to be done. The awe of the situation struck the hearts of Americans, which is why it is so powerful that a viral fundraising campaign like this be launched so people from around the country can help. Through the unwavering efforts of the HSMO, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), The Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation, and American Dog Rescue, there is no doubt that we will make a difference in the aftermath of this devastation. Never has one click, one ‘like,’ one fan been so meaningful to thousands of lives – both animal and human.”

Head on over to Facebook now and click that mouse!  www.facebook.com/AmericanDogRescue

Dog Song Saturday: Hangin Out The Window

Another Saturday... another dog song from For Love of a Dog.  Believe it or not, I'm not all that keen on rap or hip hop music.  However, this is the second or third hip hop song we featured here at Talking Dogs.  And this is another one that's going on my iPod.

Hangin Out The Window is written and performed by Esoteric.  It just happens to star a yellow Labrador Retriever dog named Logan.  Great video of Logan's doggy friends and, of course, Logan hanging out the window!  Even if you don't usually care for hip hop or rap, give this dog song a try.  I bet you'll find your head nodding along with Logan's at the beat.

If you're like me, you're gonna love the dedication at the end of this video:
Long live the Labs, the Danes, the Pits, the Boxers, and every other breed.  Bow down to the canine, for he rules the planet.

Sit.  Stay.  Grab a dog - especially a yellow Lab if you've got one!  (Lucky me, I do!)  Relax and enjoy Hangin Out the Window by Esoteric.  While you've got your groove on and are feeling all mellow, scroll down below the video to explore some barking good dog blogs in today's Pet Bloggers Hop.

Dog Song Saturday: Hey Little Doggie with Corgi Gaga

It's Saturday!  Time to take a break for a dog song!  Today's dog song video is entitled Hey Little Doggie with Corgi Gaga.  It was recorded with Noelle LeBlanc and the kids from the San Francisco Cathedral Boys choirs.

This Corgi dog song is accompanied by video of a very cute Corgi dog headed to the dog park.  Okay, I admit it... I can't resist video of a Corgi dog butt!  And I'm so charmed by this song that I'm headed straight to iTunes to download Hey Little Doggie for future listening pleasure.

Fetch a Corgi.  (Okay, any dog will dog.)  Sit.  Stay.  Relax and enjoy Hey Little Doggie with Corgi Gaga.  Then scroll down to check out some barking good dog blogs because this is a Pet Bloggers Hop.
